cloudboy -> Maureen Dowd -- Gem (10/31/2012 3:39:14 PM)

If Dowd is right about Christie's motivations (bottom paragraph), the reasoning makes perfect sense to me.

Dowd:

As Romney roams the Midwest and Florida struggling to stay relevant, miming coordinating storm response with G.O.P. governors and collecting canned goods to send East, his fair-weather pal Christie failed to give Mittens any disaster relief.

On ABC, CBS and NBC, Christie hailed Obama as “outstanding.” On MSNBC, he said the president “has been all over this,” and on CNN, he called Obama “incredibly supportive.” The big guy even tweeted his thanks to the slender one.

Most astonishing of all, the New Jersey governor went on Fox News and spoke words rarely heard on that network: “I have to give the president great credit.”

“I spoke to the president three times yesterday,” Christie gushed. “He called me for the last time at midnight last night, asking what he could do.”

Christie also extolled FEMA, even though Romney has said it is “immoral” to spend money on federal disaster relief when the deficit is so big.

“Fox & Friends” co-host Steve Doocy must have forgotten Christie’s self-regarding keynote speech at Romney’s convention, which had more “I” than “he” in it. Doocy asked Christie if there was “any possibility that Governor Romney may go to New Jersey to tour some of the damage with you?” The governor replied dismissively: “I have no idea, nor am I the least bit concerned or interested,” adding: “If you think right now I give a damn about presidential politics, then you don’t know me.”

White House officials seemed a bit flummoxed by Christie’s bearhug. “It’s unnerving,” one laughed, noting how odd it is that a Romney big gun might help break the stubborn tie in the electorate in Obama’s favor.

They speculate that Christie, who always puts Christie first, has decided that it’s

better for his presidential ambitions to be a maverick blue-state governor with a Democratic chief executive exiting in 2016 than to have President Romney and Tea-Party Republicans in Congress pulling him over to the extreme right for the next eight years.

He also knows he’ll need a boatload of federal cash to make his state whole again.

Maybe some events are a bit serious to be playing politics with? Heresy to Republicans, I guess. Seems rational to most of us? New Jersey needs serious help TODAY. FEMA can do more than anyone else. Nobody can build a fire under FEMA and the rest of the Federal bureaucracy better than the POTUS?
All the state governors involved with what FEMA has become since Katrina have been most kind in their opinions. Though one wouldn't think so listening to Rush.

Or it just might be, as other commentators have speculated, that the Gov is just a true to the heart Jersey boy who is genuinely pained by the destruction of the Jersey Shore ~ the "mythical heart of the state." Hell, he might even get Bruce Springsteen's autograph. Maybe he really had no political agenda other than being a damn good governor when needed, just as Obama was a damned good president when needed. Gotta give credit where credit is due.

I have to go along with that. Christie has a job to do and if a resource is available, get it.

I have to go along with this,my reasoning in not giving Christie the benefit of the doubt here is probably the same one Dowd had in mind ...ie: Christie himself,nothing in the man's DNA has ever suggested selflessness.What Christie does best is see to Christie and his own future.
Nothing new here

Think 'rope a dope'. Christi got Obama to spend a day on the Jersey shore ( 1%'s by the way) , got a lot of federal money for his state, and kept Obama off the campaign trail for another day. It's a win win for the republicans.

How much time has the Obama/Christi team spent on TV all over the nation...for FREE

You can't buy that kind of exposure.

Hahahaha... except those same people who were devastated by this storm are also being reminded of what Romney said about FEMA.

Holy shit Servant...that has to be the mother of all spins.
Romney's photographed with fucking cans,while President Obama is seen being....well Presidential,deplaning from Air Force One,touring the devastated areas and leading the response.....and you try to spin it to a win.
Let me ask you something is all this spin an effort to convince us...or yourself ?

servantforuse -> RE: Maureen Dowd -- Gem (10/31/2012 8:32:41 PM)

How about this prediction. Romney wins with 285 electorial votes. And why did Bloomberg tell Obama to stay away from New York ? Oblumber went to Jersey instead.

cloudboy -> RE: Maureen Dowd -- Gem (10/31/2012 8:36:33 PM)

Maybe Christie understands its better to be behind a winner than a loser, and that a Romney victory doesn't help him, NJ, or his political career. What everyone dreads in the USA is greater "Tea Party" influence -- rigid, xenophobic, patriarchal, religious, white ideologues who view compromise and bipartisanship as date-rape.

servantforuse -> RE: Maureen Dowd -- Gem (10/31/2012 8:41:15 PM)

Are you serious ? A Romney victory will certainly help Gov. Christie and the state of New Jersey. Only die hard liberals dread the tea party.. 6 more days to go...

TheHeretic -> RE: Maureen Dowd -- Gem (10/31/2012 9:06:51 PM)

And would anyone think President Obama was on the phone to Christie 3 times in a day, out of a sudden concern for New Jersey? He's in dead tie in a world where undecideds mostly break to the challenger. Like the dumbasses who stayed to watch the waves, all he is trying to do now is keep his head above water.

slvemike4u -> RE: Maureen Dowd -- Gem (10/31/2012 9:14:00 PM)

Come on Rich,now you are spinning as much as Servant.
Seriously you never considered he was talking to Christie simply as a result of Sandy ?
Of course your statement implies that were he way ahead he would ignore Jersey's plight and ignore Christie's pleadings
Please tell me you have not gone so over the partisan divide that you buy this bullshit ?
