I haven't really seen any serious Libertarian views on the state of the current election. I've heard the mud slinging and the praises of both Obama and Romney, but not a lot about Gary Johnson. Up here in Canada we have 27 parties, eight of whom are unregistered at this time, five of which are represented in the House of Commons.

(My American friends are looking blankly at this, aren't they? *sigh*)

Y'all have five major Politico parties (Virgil Goode, anybody? Jill Stein - what, a woman??). Libertarian is the third largest, so I thought maybe some Libertarians here might have opinions or observations to share. Same for the Green and the Constitutionals, if any of you are out there!

Keep in mind that in our winner-take-all system, the two biggest parties are the only ones which matter. If the Libertarians or Greens got to be Number 2 (shudder) then they'll get coverage and they'll matter in the national politic: not before.

In general, U.S. politics has been a two-party affair. Things were a bit more fluid before the Civil War, with Federalists waning, Whigs having their 15 or so years of fame, and the Republicans emerging (winning the White House for the first time in 1860). Since the war, it's been pretty much D vs. R, with the fascinating exception of 1912, when Theodore Roosevelt (disillusioned with his chosen successor, Taft, and keen to return to power) bolted the GOP and ran as a Progressive (aka Bull Moose). That split allowed Democrat Woodrow Wilson to take the lead.

It seems the Green Party candidate has resorted to getting herself arrested, to try for a little coverage.

Of course, not having a campaign or organization capable of having a statement ready when she did it, might be another indicator of why nobody gives a shit.

I am of the opinion that the US would be better served in our House of Reps with proportional representation, in a multiparty framework.

The libertarians in here all seem happy to vote Republican rather than third party.
I suppose somebody has to believe all of that crap the GOP spouts about small government, but it's still a bit pathetic when you see alleged libertarians making excuses for the chimp and his massive expansion of big government powers over the two terms he was in office. You'd think more of them would have had issues with the Electoral College deciding that it didn't matter how people voted as there wasn't going to be a recount in Florida as well...

Obama continued/expanded most of Bush's statist policies. Romney seems likely to do the same. That's why I'm voting for Johnson.

Cool. It's nice to see that a few of you do have the courage of your convictions, then. Kudos.
