I am going to enjoy this election. I honestly don't like either candidate but I can look forward to the bigots on the losing side having meltdowns due to the results. Whatever gets you through the day. I've never had the gift for enjoying others' suffering, but maybe I'll try. It would be a welcome diversion from the bigots on the winning side trying to turn back my civil rights and filling seats on the Supreme Court. You inspired me, my dear! Your plan to "enjoy this election" sounded fun, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I should probably clarify the focus of my enjoyment. It's not the disappointment among Romney supporters. I know electoral dismay all too well, and those currently suffering it include any number of my loved ones. My focus, rather, was the way that the electorate bitch slapped the hubris of some of our more irksome posters--an arrogance summed up by (but not exclusive to) the "tick tock" meme that got old weeks before the election. As for the Wilson photo, the 28th President struck me as an apt addition to the gallery of smiling faces. Woodrow Wilson was, if memory serves, the first Democratic President since Andrew Jackson to win reelection, and the 1916 race was a squeaker. So much so, in fact, that Wilson and his Vice President, Thomas Marshall, had worked out a plan to resign in the face of defeat and let Charles Evans Hughes take office immediately, so that the U.S. wouldn't have lame-duck leadership against the backdrop of the Great War. Given all that, I think Wilson would have a special appreciation for Obama's success yesterday.
