Does anyone feel sorry for Sheldon Adelson...50 MILLION DOLLARS, down the tube, wonder what he might have done for the people in the North East suffering through the aftermath of Sandy? Linda McMahon spent over 100 million in 2 failed campaigns to be defeated for the Senate TWICE!....150 Million for 2 billionaires to try to own parts of the government...Wonder if either woke up this morning feeling a bit foolish?
Any pangs of regret? 150 Million would certainly go a long way in helping a lot of people....There is something desperately wrong with our system of electing people, maybe we should re-evaluate? They have the right as it sits, to do as they have done, but think of the possibilities for good that money like that could have accomplished. Amazing when our system allows for such things, and for elections to start the day the last one ended...Over one BILLION will have been spent on the Presidential election....ONE BILLION DOLLARS!...When we speak of change mybe this is where we should start?

2012 election spending across the board is going to approach $6 billion dollars. A jaw dropping amount.

But what is the alternative? No elections?

Democracy costs.

You are right in that that is a HUGE sum of money, but when you imply that it has done no good I think you are wrong. Yes, that much money sent directly to a disaster area or to a charity would make a huge difference. But if you think of our country's economy as a disaster area, that money is making a difference. That money was spent on advertising, pavilion rentals, transportation, etc. etc. The companies providing that advertising, rentals, transportation, etc. then paid their employees, service providers, etc. etc. who then paid their bills and bought goods and services, thus putting that money into the U.S. economy. You say that over one billion dollars was spent on this election, and that is one billion dollars that went into our economy instead of sitting in the overseas bank accounts of those billionairs you mentioned.

I need to add the following:

I will say this with respects to the specific people you mention - both Republicans - they are much happier having spent their money on their private/or Romney's campaigns than they would be if they had spent the money actually helping the downtrodden. Both of them believe in self-reliance to a fault. To the point where helping people in need is not really part of their agenda. They believe if people find themselves in dire circumstances, even due to a natural disaster, it is their own fault, and that government agencies like FEMA are unnecessary.

Do I feel sad that the money was not spent in a more useful way. Yes. But do Adelson and McMahon wish they had spent it to help people? No.

And do I feel sorry that Adelson, and McMahon have "lost" this money. No, not really. I'm hard pressed to feel sorry for them personally.

Gotta agree with igor.

All that money was pumped into the economy instead of languishing in some bazillionaire's offshore bank account.

Sign companies made money. TV and video producers made money. Caterers made money. Transportation companies made money. Car rental companies made money. Thousands of small landlords all over the country made money for renting out a space for a 'headquarters' etc, etc, etc.
Think about it folks. Some people might think about it being wasteful spending but actually, it was a very real "Redistribution of wealth".

Redistribution of wealth only counts when it involves a government ebt card.

Rove was one of the ones raking in the cash, Lucy, not spending it. Hell, Fox will probably cut him a bonus for that ridiculous, "it's too soon to call Ohio," schtick that kept the hopeful tuned in last night.

The money spent in this election went to people who were willing to do something for it. The bribes came out of the public treasury.
