FatDomDaddy -> The Duty of the Opposition Party is to OPPOSE the Ruling Party (11/8/2012 7:57:14 PM)

With all this "This is what the Republican's should do" stuff being bandied about the one sure way to destroy the GOP is to go running toward the left.

There's an election in two years and President Obama is already a lame duck.

Right, keep up the same shit that hasn't worked for the past 4 years and lost you significant ground and the Presidency. Good plan. Democrats endorse your idea.

FatDomDaddy -> RE: The Duty of the Opposition Party is to OPPOSE the Ruling Party (11/8/2012 8:17:49 PM)

What happen in 2010?

FMRFGOPGAL -> RE: The Duty of the Opposition Party is to OPPOSE the Ruling Party (11/8/2012 8:24:42 PM)

The Democrats don't care how you destroy yourselves. You had big losses and if they keep up this panty act that Boehner and McConnell pulled last time, this will be the shortest happy dance you guys have ever had.
And I'll say this ... "The Duty of the Opposition Party is to OPPOSE the Ruling Party" Rap is nonsense. Show us where in the charter of either party that kind of rigidity is part of EITHER party's ideologies or objectives. No, this is an invention. As late as the middle 90s there was uniformly compromise as settlement in matters of conflict. This scorched earth BS is actually rather recent. And I think the kind of statement you headline this with is more representative of parliamentary government than a republic.

Ah ... so "The People" were mistaken two nights ago but they weren't in 2010?

Whatever... Nothing more entertaining than watching the sore losers try and salvage their BS after a sound beating.[:D]

I'd correct by saying that their job is not only to oppose the ruling party but to position themselves as advantageously as possible for success in the next election...a balance must be struck. That is why there are so many post-election autopsies being done at this moment.

FatDomDaddy -> RE: The Duty of the Opposition Party is to OPPOSE the Ruling Party (11/8/2012 8:37:59 PM)

We have divided government for a reason.... the people vote every two years for a reason... They will be heard next in 2014

Actually you wouldn't... unless you live somewhere like southeast asia or perhaps india. But I'll give you the same chance as I gave FDD, document your claim.

So in short, your answer to MY CHALLENGE is "No I Can't".
  Okay, that's what I thought you'd say.
Have a nice night. I'm going to go get me some football player as a night cap.

Name some of the greatest legislative failures in the United States and I will show you compromise

"two years"....right...tick tick, yada yada...

More con-make-pretend.....this time republicans imagining their single digit approval rating isn`t about them.....[:D]

As to what happens to the GOP.......that`s your train-wreck and your problem.....

Does "opposition" include outing our CIA agents or dissing our embassy staffs WHILE their compounds are being over run?!

I`m not sure if the "real republicans" know it or not,but your party is already split and you`ve been kicked to the curb already....

Sarah wasn`t invited..... nor were any of the Ts to speak at your convention and bush&dick....... didn`t even show up......

The absolute demoralization of your party was in full effect till the "1st" debate......but the under laying decay and lack of principals is/was still there.

Ths split will be roughly between the Ts and nuts like Bachmann and the republicans who don`t think ANYONE......... including dick cheney or darrel issa......... should be leaking the names of our CIA agents.

The only thing that united your party was opposition to one man.....the President....

No party can survive by just being against things and people or one person....they have to offer something positive,  uplifting and constructive .

I disagree... it is the job of the people there from my state to represent me and my interests not to just stamp no on anything just because the idea comes from someone with a D behind their name. Many people forget these people don't work for the party they work for the people from their state!

Wow! What a radical concept. You mean you think your representatives are representing YOU rather than some political party somewhere? Wow! I gave up that notion for the Republicans with the Lewinsky affair (that was the end of my Republican affiliation). I gave it up with the democrats with the NDAA. Both of them have made it very clear who they are serving if one simply follows the money.

Do I believe they are.. or that they should? At current crop my state has in office nope. They are bowing to the parties on almost every level. I believe we have let them forget that they work for us not the other way around.

That started happening when they ratified the 17th amendment.

TheHeretic -> RE: The Duty of the Opposition Party is to OPPOSE the Ruling Party (11/8/2012 10:03:56 PM)

There was a very telling moment during the third debate, when looming sequestration came up, and the President dealt with it by flatly saying, "that's not going to happen." Immediately following the debate, once Obama was clear of being questioned further, the staff walked that statement way back.

Keep in mind that this is the administration that offered to pay the fines of companies that were told to break the law (a law that is strictly adhered to, when it comes to school budgets), to avoid seeing thousands of lay-off notices given out the Friday before the election (and to be paid with tax dollars). The story was under-reported of course, for what it said about the man we just saw elected to a second term, but easily Googled to whatever mainstream source you like.

It will be the current Congress that President Obama must find a way to work with, unless he wants to start his second term by triggering another crisis in the economy.

The original Opposition Party in the US was a party that opposed the Democrats wanting to expand slavery. And yes, more than one were elected. You see, the Republicans had not really formed up yet. But they very much opposed what is called Bleeding Kansas and allowing Kansas into the union as a slave state.

Now. . . what I think that the OP is referring to is a British idea from about the same time period. In parliament, the loyal opposition opposes the current politics of the ruling government, but this DOES NOT CONSTITUTE TREASON! (In the British sense they are still loyal to HRM.)

Do you see the capital letters? That is for emphasis. The opposing party is supposed to oppose. That is why they are the opposing party. This does not make them treasonous, disloyal, bad Americans, racist, haters, or any other label you want to throw.

That is the point.

"loyal opposition "

There`s the problem right there and where the GOP has failed

I knew someone would eventually make this point and it was a con to boot.[:D]

You Sir obviously don't understand what the term loyal opposition means.

Who should the GOP be loyal to, the constituents who voted them into office to oppose Democrat policies, or the President?
