http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/boehner-political-party-ve-got-172951278--election.html

"Boehner reiterated his opposition to raising taxes as part of that deal, even on high-income earners, and says he sees the negotiations as a way to overhaul the tax code and the way the federal government pays for entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare."

When is this dumb ass going to stop referring to Social Security and Medicare as welfare programs? I heard failure to reach an agreement could cause another recession. I'm hoping now that President Obama is on his last term and has nothing to lose, he won't hesitate to use an executive order as a last resort. I'm so tired of republicans holding the economy hostage for the 1%.

Not to nitpick, but...

en·ti·tle·ment
Noun:

The fact of having a right to something.
The amount to which a person has a right.

wel·fare
Noun:

Statutory procedure or social effort designed to promote the basic physical and material well-being of people in need.

He said, "entitlement". You translated that to "welfare".

Comprehension is the key to understanding.

And far fewer headaches. [;)]

defiantbadgirl -> RE: Boehner still not willing to cooperate (11/9/2012 5:11:49 PM)

To republicans, the word entitlement is a synonym of welfare. They turned entitlement into a dirty word. Since people pay in to social security and medicare, both programs are self sustaining and need to be left alone.

Really? As a lifelong Republican, I must have missed that directive. I shall have to contact my party leaders right away...[8|]

Um. You're taking Boehner at his word. His statement means:

1. He's talking right now about a meeting to avoid the fiscal cliff.
2. He might be willing to compromise on upping taxes on the wealthy, but he doesn't want it to be explicit. "Overhaul the tax code" means changing a bunch of stuff so that it's not obvious that it's a tax increase.

All in all, I think it's a welcome sign. Now he and Obama both will make statements saying hos important an agreement is, and how nobody's sacred cows will get damaged, and then they can talk.

subrob1967 -> RE: Boehner still not willing to cooperate (11/9/2012 5:20:33 PM)

Boehner should agree to Clinton era tax rates in exchange for the Dems agreeing to Clinton era spending.

mnottertail -> RE: Boehner still not willing to cooperate (11/9/2012 5:25:04 PM)

I can agree with that in principle.  However, I will point out that it doesn't do a fucking thing for the debt.  it would be good for the deficit however.   But it may be a way less painful way to get started down the road.

DomKen -> RE: Boehner still not willing to cooperate (11/9/2012 5:26:40 PM)

I thought the cons were dead set against deep cuts to defence?

mnottertail -> RE: Boehner still not willing to cooperate (11/9/2012 5:33:37 PM)

Well, they may well be, but it didn't play well in Poughkipsie, did it?  They (the long termers, gotta be quivvering nuts now a little, what's left).

They might not back off that one, and rather take all the spending out of entitlements they can, look at the Ryan plan asswipe, and just recycle that, cuz tax raising was mentioned, if entitlements 'reformed' (which may translate into vouchers and privatization), but no military shit was mentioned.

They will be punched dead in the goddam face for that one if that's the party line.
But I bet it is.

Oh, everyone is making their little speeches, but it is just a crafty rewording of what was, is and always will be, insofar as I can tell.

On the other hand, there are fewer people who signed the Nordquist bull, and there might be more willing to wipe their ass with it (the longer term professionals, to save their worthless ass).

Yes, please! The Constitutional crisis that would spark would be an even better way to freeze his second term agenda, than the House full of Republicans the electorate gave him.

Or perhaps you just want the next Republican to hold the office packing the same sort of authority?

mnottertail -> RE: Boehner still not willing to cooperate (11/9/2012 6:03:02 PM)

LOL.  Constitutional crisis......LOLOLOLOL.  SO NOT.

The last one did.

Do lliberals understand that the govt gets mor money by lowering rates and increasing GDP?

it is called an income tax for a reason, income comes from growth, not from taxes. You cannot grow shit if that income is being wasted by a bloated govt that is growing a 6 times the rate of GDP.

The 1% are liberal democrats.

Maybe I missed something, but Boehner called them entitlement programs. The word welfare was not anywhere in the link that you posted. YOU used the word welfare.

But beyond that - did you think the House was suddenly going to just roll over and play dead because people didn't even care enough to be apathetic about voting? This was about turnout and Republicans couldn't get people to the polls. They said this would happen when the party leaders pushed so hard to have Romney as the candidate. They were right.

Now I also think the deck is stacked against republicans - when the media has stopped even pretending to be neutral, I'm more concerned about how the media is failing to do it's job for the Republic than I am about people not turning out to vote. A recent survey said that the public trusts labor unions more than they trust the news media...that's how far they've fallen.

The 1% are liberal democrats.

If that was true, the 'trickle down economics' of the last 30+ years would have worked.

It has not.

Ergo, you post bullshit.

First... its liberal... with one "l" at the beginning.

Second, taxes is how the government raises revenue.

As far as GDP... try looking at GDI instead.

I knew he would come up with a dramatic tone to help us forget all his very non-committal predictions about the election.
Nothing like the wish that future calamity will befall your country for the sake of preserving your "I told you so" posture.
