BoundSlave4Life -> How low will major companies go? (11/10/2012 3:41:38 PM)

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/09/papa-johns-obamacare-john-schnatter_n_2104202.html

In the wake of President Obama's reelection, one CEO is doubling down on his criticisms of Obamacare.

Papa John’s CEO John Schnatter said he plans on passing the costs of health care reform to his business onto his workers. Schnatter said he will likely reduce workers’ hours, as a result of President Obama's reelection, the Naples News reports. Schnatter made headlines over the summer when he told shareholders that the cost of a Papa John’s pizza will increase by between 11 and 14 cents due to Obamacare.

"I got in a bunch of trouble for this," he said, referring to the comments he made in August, according to Naples News. "That's what you do, is you pass on costs. Unfortunately, I don't think people know what they're going to pay for this."

Schnatter went on to say he's neither in support of, nor against the Affordable Care Act, even admitting that "the good news is 100 percent of the population is going to have health insurance.” But he’s not the only one in the chain restaurant industry to admit that workers hours may be reduced, since Obamacare mandates that only employees that work more than 30 hours per week are covered under their employers health insurance plan. For example, Darden restaurants, the parent company of Olive Garden and Red Lobster, has already experimented with reducing workers hours in anticipation of the legislation.

Others have responded to the added costs of Obamacare more harshly, including Applebee's franchisee owner Zane Tankel who said his company won’t hire new workers because of the law. Just this week, a Georgia business owner also claimed he cut employees due to Obamacare and in fact had specifically laid off those who he thought had voted for President Obama.

Well laying off employees due to how they voted I can't agree with, unless they are being obnoxious about it. Secret ballot required you keep it a secret for that to work out.

However cost of operations go up, you gotta cover that cost, be it with trimming off payroll, or charging customers more.

hypothetical, obama raises prices of gas a dollar, UPS announces that they will be charging more to cover the costs.

Companys restricting hours to avoid full time status +benefits is nothing new.

" including Applebee's franchisee owner Zane Tankel who said his company won’t hire new workers because of the law."

Won't hire any new employees. Sooo, whatcha gonna do as people leave, move away, retire, find other employment, go to school or otherwise leave your establishment? Are you going to just gradually work your way to an empty building?

How can someone so utterly fucking STUPID scrape up enough cash to buy a major franchise?

What we're seeing is a consequence of Obamacare. Guess those who voted for it should benefit first?[8D][8|]

He's not the only one.... this what American's voted for.

Companies plan massive layoffs as Obamacare becomes reality

After Obama reelection, Murray Energy CEO reads prayer, announces layoffs

That's funny. You equate "hire new workers" with replacing a worker who leaves for whatever reason. Perhaps he will lean out some by attrition. It's hysterical you calling him fucking stupid. [:D]

I would be perfectly happy if all conservative business owners just closed up shop. Other business owners will just step in eventually. This isn't a zero sum game. If they want out of their businesses, then go and good riddance. The spitefulness of someone who would actually destroy their own business instead of just supporting things like healthcare. Astounding. This is not just about money at all. Total cutting off nose to spite face kind of ridiculousness. Yet another thread showing how ignorant the right wing of this country is. And then they wonder why a majority of people didn't want to vote for Romney.

FatDomDaddy -> RE: How low will major companies go? (11/10/2012 3:59:37 PM)

yep... they will... with 25-30 hour work weeks with no benefits

I see discrimination lawsuits in his future.

It's AMAZING how you leftists find it so easy to tell others how they should run their businesses. No one should be surprised though, as you also so easily tell others how their money should be spent and even help them do it[8D]

FR

Again if this businessmen can't make a go of whatever they've invested in, then good riddance. There is no guarantee with a market economy that your business will succeed. Find something else to invest in that is a better bet for the future. The economy is restructuring. Business minded people need to determine the best use of their investment assets in newly emerging markets. Adapt or die. Isn't that what the marketplace is about.

In other words quit whining and learn how to compete effectively. I have zero, absolutely zero sympathy for the people in these articles. Winning at business means taking risk. That means, sometimes you lose.

I feel like labor should just organize and refuse to work for conservative businesses. This is such immature behavior on the part of these business owners.

No, what happened in Greece is that people stopped paying taxes. That's what low/no taxes gives you. A bankrupt government. And right wingers still want to carry on about how taxes need to be lower. Again, people don't understand simple economics. [&:]

So how did you feel about the bailout of GM? What about the money given to Solyandra an Light Squared?

I am in business for myself and do quite fine, thank you very much. And when I did employ people, I paid them what they were legally entitled to be paid. That's the way business is supposed to work. I can't help the fact that the right wing thinks they should be able to do ILLEGAL or IMMORAL things. Oh right, that's how we ended up with Bernie Madoff, the bank bailout, and the mortgage crisis. Yeah, business people seem to know just what they're doing and don't need to be regulated or told what to do...give me a break. [&:]

The government has established the legal entitlement of pay. It's called the minimum wage. [8D]

Is a replacement worker not "NEW"? Is it someone you had before? Is it someone you had stored in a drawer and activated? What is he going to do if his business picks up? Just stay with the same staff?

A businessman staffs according to the needs of his company. If he does it wrong, he makes less money. It's called Capitalism.

The guy is pure bluster and, unfortunately, most people are stupid enough to believe him.

Not applicable for wait staff and independent contractors.

Another reason Im calling bullshit on Mr Applebees. Waitresses pull down $2.10/hour plus tips.
If you have a shortage or these 'expensive' employees, the wait for your food gets long, service suffers, word gets out and, soon, you're blaming someone else because you don't have any customers in your restaurant.
