Marini -> Are we headed towards ALL out war in the Middle East? (11/17/2012 9:54:29 AM)

I suspect we will have hundreds of threads on the Middle East, indefinitely.

I have ONE question to ask.

How many think that in light of what has been happening in the past few years, including the latest Israeli/Palestinian conflict, that it is not far fetched to conclude, we may be seeing the beginning of ALL out war in the Middle East?

We all know that Israel and the Palestinians have been fighting for over 50 years, but with Palestinian getting increased support from Hamas and other "unknown" supporters, I think the tables might be turning.

I don't think many people see it as only the Palestinians against Israel in 2012.

I personally think there is so much going on, that it is starting to look really Biblical over there in the Middle East.

I don't see any of this ending in my lifetime, at the most, I predict lulls in the fighting.

What say you?

Are we headed to all out war in the Middle East?
If your answer is NO, please tell me why you feel that way also.

Not a chance, at least not for those reasons.

If syria devolves, it will be a failed state. However, there isnt anyone who could step in. Not isreal, not the saudis, and unless we get Bush's brother, nobody else is stupid enough to invade. There is no oil to attract the west.

Now if israel strikes Iran, iran wont respond directly but the rocket attacks will step up as the gloves will come off.

The reality is the combined armies of the ME will get their asses handed to them by the israelis and they need those armies to stay in power, pure and simple.

Great answer
NOTE, I did say "beginning", I hope most people realize that just because something "begins"---- it can take a hundred or hundreds of years to "end".

We often don't know when things will "end", I just like being aware that things are beginning.

Thanks for responding.

My opinion, Mari, is that an all out war is the only way that mess is going to be resolved. Either there won't be any more Isreal at all, or their surviving neighbors will have it burned into their collective consciousness for 500 years that you don't fuck with Isreal.

I used to be sympathetic to the Palestinians. Now, I refuse to give more of a shit about horrific civilian casualties than the people supplying and launching the rockets do. Isreal can nuke 'em until they glow, then shoot them in the dark, and I'll just click away from the news stories, if the pictures might spoil my appetite. They don't want peace. They lost not only my support, they lost my interest. Whatever.

You said, "Biblical." I think that's what makes a total war there inevitable. Whether people buy into such prophecy or not, three major world religions have it written into their central texts that not only will there be a great war, but that something wonderful will follow it. Let me just be really clear here. I'm not saying that such a war is inevitable because the Bible/Koran says so, but that such beliefs lay the foundation for the prophecy to become self-fulfilling. It's going to happen because a lot of people cannot imagine a future where it doesn't.

I don't think there will be all out war in the area, I don't think they are that stupid really. Iran doesn't want to get involved at all at least beyond having a few fingerprints here and there. If Iran starts to lop a missile at Isreal then the US will have no choice but to join in the fray from a large ship parked off their waters. If we didn't think of the chaos that would open the door for. Don't they do this every few yeras anyhow? Hamas starts to send a few missiles over to Isreal and the Isrealis take a few of them to show that they aren't being teh aggressors (I say that with tongue in cheek) and then after a few more missiles they respond, they both pound their chests and then go home.

I do see a difference this time with such instability in the area and with Egypt not opening their mouths to bring things to a halt things very well could escalate. I think it hinges all on Egypt and the newly elected (HAHA) government. In the past it was that voice that kept things from turning south but there seems to be no voice there now and that peace accord may fall into the fire. It is tense over there that is for sure.

Indeed. For one thing, Israel was smart enough to create a laser based interceptor system that effectively neutralizes quite a significant fraction of the incoming ordnance in the areas where this technology has been deployed. For another, they have nuclear weapons and a massive amount of other weaponry, all of which they are willing to use with no regard for ethics, widely accepted rules of engagement, or indeed anything other than their own interests.

In this regard, Israel is the ultimate example of "might makes right".

Yes. It's what passes for an election campaign in Israel.

Actually, given the statement by officials that Israel is about to grind Gaza back into the Dark Ages, and that they're mustering reserves for combat, and that Netanyahu's office is stating that there are no efforts to conduct peace talks, it's quite possible that things will end up escalating real fast now. They're not concerned with finding an arrangement. They're concerned with justifying what they've done, and what they say they're about to do.

The Palestinians are never going to give up their land....they`ll die 1st.

They have nothing else. They`re not going to give up....

Just as neither would any of our war-monger-armchair-warrior-chicken-cowards here, who`re advocating WW III as a solution......

You can`t kill that many people.....and get away with it........not even the Israelis

And I don`t think the Israelis are capable of a genocide ....as our knuckle draggers would hope.....

I think you are absolutely correct, Aswad.

Anyone up for a game of Monopoly?

These Israeli lads probably would be, except they're busy watching the match... by which I mean the bombing of Gaza.

Was just listening to the radio and it is stated that Egypt has "operatives" in The Gaza Strip and they are trying to convince Hamas to back down. That is the first that I have heard Egypt using their voice which used to carry some weight in the region. I say used to because it is reported that Hamas is telling Egypt NO! The whole ME could rise up, they are already on the edge as it is, this could end up being really ugly. I would guess Iran is going to keep it to a low roar because everyone is looking for a reason over there. It is amazing that even today we think we know what is best for all of them after they have been warring each other for centuries.

Politesub53 -> RE: Are we headed towards ALL out war in the Middle East? (11/17/2012 4:51:25 PM)

A bigger danger to peace could be if Hezbollah get hold of any of the chemical weapons said to be in Syria. That would escalate things out of all proportion.

switchdavid69 -> RE: Are we headed towards ALL out war in the Middle East? (11/17/2012 6:44:53 PM)

Would those chemical weapons be the wmd's that were in Irac and shipped to Syria ? Maybe that's why they were never found ?

I enjoyed reading all of the responses here.

Rich, you also mentioned Biblical, and it certainly has seemed very Biblical to me, for a very long time.

When I talk about an ALL out war in the Middle East, it is NOT only because of the latest Israeli/Palestinian crisis.

Far from it, I am talking about ALL of the conflicts in the Middle East!
Israeli/Palestinian, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Libya, seriously it's hard to keep track.
I often get the conflicts confused.
I am talking about the entire region.

We may not be headed towards all out war in that area, but we are certainly headed for "something".
Most of us realize that even after that "something" occurs, it's just a matter of time before something else occurs.

There is no end to this in sight, it seems to be a matter of where/what/ and when the next "situation" will occur.

Peace

I wish I could share your confidence.

However, after watching Israel slide down the slippery slope that started with ethnic cleansing, progressed to apartheid in the West Bank, let their Army kill over 1400 Palestinian children in a decade without any one there even thinking that this might be cause for an inquiry, build an elaborate system for the systematic abduction, incarceration and torture of children, all of that interspersed with aggressive wars, intermittent atrocities, bouts of outright butchery such as Cast Lead and war crimes as official State policy with its citizens encouraged to join in, I don't feel that there is any basis for confidence that Israel is incapable of genocide.

I wish my fears are misplaced, I hope I am dead wrong but I have no confidence that we can expect anything from a nation that long abandoned its moral compass except more of the same and worse.

Are the Palestinians recruiting good liberals to serve as human shields, by any chance?

I'm seeing potential candidates.

The parallels between the Warsaw ghetto and today are tragic. In the larger context I support Israel againt the arabs. However, one could take wwII german propaganda and well, you either, see it or you dont.
