Some Walmart workers are going on strike because health insurance premiums are tripling next year without Walmart absorbing the cost and because of being told on short notice they're expected to work even earlier on Thanksgiving. How are employees supposed to afford a triple increase in premiums on Walmart wages? How many employees will be forced to drop their coverage? How many deaths will that cause? Places like fire departments, hospitals, and nursing homes have to be open on holidays. Department stores and convenience stores don't. Working holidays sucks period, but I think the worst thing about it is mortality. What if a loved one ends up spending their last holiday without you because you're at working at a place that doesn't even have to be open?

I won't go in there on Thanksgiving... they should let workers volunteer to come in, and pay them time and a half.

Buncha bullshit.

Yeah, but a lot of retail workers ask to work on holidays, because they get usually paid time-and-a-half or double. As far as the insurance goes.... frankly I'm surprised Walmart gives insurance to enough of their workers for them to bother striking. Retail gigs usually hire everybody below supervisor as part-time so they don't have to pay for bennies. But tripled premiums will probably force most everybody below store manager out of the insurance plan. That's pretty awful, but not surprising.

It shows their real fears concerning the economic slowdown. Even the Salvation Army bell ringers are out. I remember when only a gas station would be open on Thanksgiving.

defiantbadgirl -> RE: Black Friday strike at Walmart (11/18/2012 9:22:58 AM)

This story is followed by some interesting comments. Liberals agree with what the workers are doing because of how they're being treated. Conservatives agree with the strike because they believe Walmart is responsible for covering higher health insurance premiums, not taxpayers.

fucktoyprincess -> RE: Black Friday strike at Walmart (11/18/2012 10:51:34 AM)

If you ignore and exploit people long enough, eventually they get tired of the treatment, and find other ways to get what they want. Witness both the French and Russian revolutions.

For anyone out there who thinks that this country can survive by simply ignoring the needs of those on the bottom, please, think again. People will only tolerate so much for so long.

The best way to ensure a stable economy is to also consider how to help those on the bottom. A strong economy that leaves those on the bottom vulnerable is NOT a stable economy. This is my main bone of contention with conservatives. They seem to think that as long as those on the top are doing well, it doesn't matter what issues the bottom is facing. This is simply economically and politically incorrect. We can't afford to ignore the bottom.

Walmart is filing a labor charge. Looks like they plan to fight back.

Target workers are also protesting Black Thursday/Black Thanksgiving.

You're fired. Next in line to have a job?

I'm rarely one to side with a strike, personally. I work outside of retail and guess what? My insurance premiums are going up too! It is not just Wal-Mart, it is tons of industries nationwide due to the national health care law. Just the way it is. We're all getting screwed, but you do not see everyone else striking, do you? Though I do not intend to go shopping on Thanksgiving day - that's... just not necessary, at all.

And did anyone notice that movie theater employees have been working holidays for a heck of a long time without striking? My brother and I both had to work Christmas day one year (he was at a movie rental place, I was at a theater) - different shifts so the whole family was not together that day until about 11 at night. (And I WISH I got holiday pay, they did not even give us overtime if we clocked in over 40. I didn't last there more than 2 months.)

Health insurance premiums see smallest increase in 15 years

But the more modest increases aren't because doctors or insurers are charging less. Faced with the 2014 implementation of health care reform, employers are making a greater effort to control their costs by shifting more of the expense and risk on to their employees.

Increasingly, employers are offering plans that charge significantly lower premiums but require employees to cover more out-of-pocket costs like higher deductibles. These consumer-directed health plans, or CDHPs, carry premiums that are about 20% less than other types of plans, making them much more affordable for employers, Mercer said.

The average premium cost, for both employer and employee combined, is about $10,558 per employee this year, according to the survey. At large companies, that combined cost averages $11,003, while premiums at smaller companies average $9,913. On average, employees are responsible for 22% of that cost, little changed from a year ago.

When the line around my offices runs 3 blocks long to apply for $10.00 an hour jobs that offer a shitty health care package that the employees pay 35% of (as they do for every WalMart I've seen around the Seattle market....an unbelievably healthy one)....when I offer starting wages of $18.00 plus (depending on skills), and can't get 12 people who can actually spell their own names correctly, for a firm where we pay 100% health care (and a killer policy)....I'll cry some tears for these folks.

And my staff are eligible after 90 days, again, 100% coverage...not 2 years.

No offense to the largest employer on earth, or their employees but...if they obtained some marketable skills....they'd earn more.

Simple economics.

"Evaluating Wal-Mart’s Health Insurance Benefits

Corporation’s plan is only slightly worse than its chain competitors

Wal-Mart’s critics are often appalled by the company’s health insurance coverage, but the facts don’t always justify the rants directed against the company.

Detractors point out that Wal-Mart covers only 48 percent of its employees. But according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute, in the retail sector overall only 45 percent of workers receive health coverage from their own employer. Still, why do more than half of Wal-Mart’s employees opt out of the company’s health insurance?

For one thing, part-time workers who make up 25 percent of Wal-Mart’s workforce are not eligible until after two years. Then there is the cost. Wal-Mart pays 67 percent of the cost of health insurance for employees, about equal to the retail industry average of 68 percent for family coverage-but, for individual health insurance, far below the 77 percent that retailers contribute on average.

Many employees opt out because they are otherwise covered. The company says that two-thirds of its employees are second-income providers, college students, and senior citizens. Many of these have health insurance through their spouse’s employer, parent’s plan, or retirement and Medicare programs. Thus about 40 percent of the company’s workers are covered apart from Wal-Mart’s plan.

Hence the company asserts that close to 90 percent of its employees have health insurance by one means or another. Deductibles are $1,000 for a plan with a low premium, which does not include routine treatments such as flu shots and child vaccinations. Wal-Mart’s health insurance emphasizes protection for catastrophic health expenses such as cancer treatment.

Health-care premiums for U.S. employer plans increased 11.2 percent in 2004, the fourth consecutive year of double-digit increases. Wal-Mart’s coverage seems to reflect a company facing spiraling health-care costs for more than 1.5 million employees."

Waaaaaaaaaaaaa.

i just hope people don't lose their jobs. walmart's typical response to striking and union practices is firing trouble makers and closing up shop. that said, i side with the workers on this one.

mnottertail -> RE: Black Friday strike at Walmart (11/18/2012 4:38:53 PM)

I wouldn't get out of bed to get some shiteating job in retail.  They had any guts, they would burn them cocklickers out of existance.

fucktoyprincess -> RE: Black Friday strike at Walmart (11/18/2012 5:09:57 PM)

Let us also be mindful of the fact that Walmart is also involved in several corruption/bribery scandals worldwide. We are not talking about the most "above board" employer here....let's just all be honest.

Says the guy who works in a pawn shop.... Isn't a pawn shop retail Ron?

Um Walmart is exempt from the ACA, so the I hope WM forces any employee who decides to miss work in protest. Hey I know of at least 18,000 people who will be looking for work, maybe Walmart should call the unemployed Bakers & Teamsters.

You folks dont give a fuck about these 18000 people, because they are the drain, the welfare patients on you r society.

Let's face it, we been told that these workers are wal-mart republicans.  They are the people that make america great.

Like these little shit eating minimum wage retail jobs are somehow better than welfare or starving.

As are most supporters of Communist China, the place where Walmart is forcing jobs and staking their future on.

It would be more ironic if it wasnt so tragic.

Whereas you thrive by ripping them off for pennies on the dollar. That's why you care about them, their misfortune is your fortune.

Nah writing tickets isn't retail, the people aren't buying what we're selling. Think of paying tickets as the cost of doing business. Don't want to pay, don't drive and break the law...

What's your excuse? Oh that's right, you rip them off for their own good. They have to pay the tax man somehow, and there you are, offering them pennies on the dollar. Heat is more important than Grandma's old ring, right Ron?
