I think we are veering off topic, if she decides to go buy panties, she should not cross the picket lines at WalMart on Friday.

I bet we don't see many on strike on Friday, we will probably only see a line of people camped out waiting to go in the store.

slvemike4u -> RE: Black Friday strike at Walmart (11/19/2012 7:59:31 PM)

See an earlier post of mine to gauge how I feel about that.
I find it hard to believe how Americans have let retail store mar the one holiday that is supposed to be all about family.
How many of you now figure standing on a line all night into your holiday planning ?
I did it one year, and swore,no matter the sales that I would never again do it....than my niece came down for Thanksgiving last year,,,and just had to go shopping after dinner.
Of course by "shopping" she meant standing in line for hours with other like minded idiots.....I being the uncle that will walk her down the aisle(when the time comes) schleppped along and froze my ass off.[&o]

Some Walmart workers are going on strike because health insurance premiums are tripling next year without Walmart absorbing the cost and because of being told on short notice they're expected to work even earlier on Thanksgiving. How are employees supposed to afford a triple increase in premiums on Walmart wages? How many employees will be forced to drop their coverage? How many deaths will that cause? Places like fire departments, hospitals, and nursing homes have to be open on holidays. Department stores and convenience stores don't. Working holidays sucks period, but I think the worst thing about it is mortality. What if a loved one ends up spending their last holiday without you because you're at working at a place that doesn't even have to be open?

Uhmmmm....WalMart has been open on Thanksgiving since it opened.

There's no news here.

All of those are getting compensated far in excess of what a schlub at Walmart makes .
Just sayin...

In a lot of cases, not even close mike.

Look up wages for a CNA in a nursing home some time.
Or a janitor, or a dishwasher.

Want to bet the totsal compensation package is better....though I did go back and look at the post in question...."wait staff" is certainly problematic
Tips only add up when you are waiting on a full room,I myself have spent more than a few mid-week nights looking at a room full of empty tables.
On nights like those the Walmart employee was certainly doing far better than I.
Of course I made up for those nights on Thurs,Fri and Sat night.Sure I was sweating bullets, but I was pocketing some change too [:)]

And look up Ala trade and food land they pay minimum wage to their poultry producers and they wrap and sell to Wal Mart. And they pay Health care Insurance that takes almost half their check. My job just barely over 10.50 for a poultry plant and we also get health care and it takes a good chunk out of my pay check every week and yes mine is also going up too January. So by the time its said and done we will only be taking home 7.50 an hour AFTER health Care.

Thanks, I certainly don't know much about it

Ok. Setting that aside, along with your foundation of knowledge of, "low income types," are you seriously suggesting a government conspiracy to increase incidents of drunk driving, as a means of revenue enhancement? Really?

•Walmart will open at 10 p.m., two hours ahead of last year's midnight opening.

Only some were open until last year. Some were closed. Depends on local blue laws and such, as well as if they were a super center.

A good friend works in a nursing home.
CNA's. Minimum wage, no particular holidays or weekends off (face it, old folks need care every day). No bennies.

For that, you get to deal with poopy diapers, wet beds, bathing, people with dementia etc, etc, etc.
I'm not saying these folks at WallyWorld don't have a point but there are a HELL of a lot of folks who have it a lot worse in the workplace and they need to stop thinking they're some kind of special flower or something.

Let us also be mindful of the fact that Walmart is also involved in several corruption/bribery scandals worldwide. We are not talking about the most "above board" employer here....let's just all be honest.

Exactly.

Here in the UK Walmart-ASDA is one of the leading beneficiaries of Workfare

Workfare is what happens to all the sick and disabled people on welfare benefits who ATOS Healthcare (who have the £3 million contract to assess people for the Government) deem 'fit for work'.

These people are being given the choice of either finding their own job immediately, or not working and having no benefits (and therefore no income) or keeping their benefits if they work unpaid for an employer such as a High Street retailer or e supermarket.

The Government have set the DWP (Department of Work and Pensions) a target of getting 85% of sick and disabled people off welfare benefits.

As a result, many people placed on Workfare are either physically or mentally incapable of work, because they are too ill, because they are recovering, or because they need care themselves. Some of these people die as a result of being placed on Workfare.

Companies like Walmart-ASDA don't pay these people wages, but get them for free to give them 'work experience'.

They're benefitting from Workfare pretty much the same as companies like Bosch, Siemens, Mercedes did in 1930's Nazi Germany on schemes which were pretty much the same - forced menial labour for the 'untermenschen'.

Part of me wouldn't be surprised if they started selling socks made out of human hair...

.. nor would it surprise me if people bought such socks either.

Walmart is staggering the big ticket items to try and avoid the stampede this year. Something they should have done years ago after the first stampede injury incident.

What a shitty deal....to have an option, with govt. funding to obtain gainful employment (by the way...and I can't speak for the UK, but this offer is made in the United States for all employees who have more than 60 weeks of unemployment, a derivative of it is offered for disabled, as well as incoming/homecoming Veterans...it's kind of a cool thing...and an incentive for companies that may not hire anyone....but with a "credit", these folks have a shot at a job).

Horrible stuff....yeah.
