Yellowstone is in Wyoming.

And Montana and Idaho.

I'm reliably informed that there are also cities in that area. May I congratulate the inhabitants on having done *very well indeed*?

Yes there are towns and cities near Yellowstone, and they prove that people are willing to wait to commit suicide by super volcano. Considering that currently Yellowstone is 30,000 years overdue. Yellowstone is also 74cm higher than it was in 1923, indicating some ground deformation.

Now there are a few benefits to Yellowstone erupting.

1) The resulting mini iceage would offset climate change problems.
2) The resulting change in world wide weather patterns would cause a shortage in food supplies, which would be a godsend for the wealthy republicans in the US since the poor could not afford to eat and therefore they would starve.
Of course this would mean that there would be far fewer people to do subservient labor for the wealthy in the US.
It is estimated that some 2/3's of the world's population would be in danger of dieing if any one of the known super volcanoes on the planet were to erupt.

Now the problems with such an eruption.
1) the massive amount of volcanic ash dropped on the great plains would hinder crop production for some years after the eruption stopped.
2) the ash falling into bodies of water would so contaminate the water supply thus causing shortages of drinking water.
3) with the drastically reduced grain production, there would be a shortage of good whiskey for a number of years following the eruption.

I went on a cruise a couple of years ago, and the guide when we were visiting ruins mentioned the whole Mayan Calendar thing. I didn't pay much attention. I didn't realize until about a year later that there were actually people who really DID believe the world was going to end on that date. Then a few months ago I was laughing about the whole zombie apocalypse craze, and I found out that there are people who actually believe there will be one.

I gotta start paying attention. Y2K must have damaged my brain......

Invest in tritical.    If I recall correctly you can even make beer (liquid bread, heh) and whiskey from it.

Cordeliasub, there have been many Doomsday cults and theories in the last fifty years.

The Mayan doomsday theory actually originated in the 1970's and has seen many incarnations.

As for the Zombie apocalypse, it has already started, or did you miss the story about the drug addict zombie that ate the man's face in Florida?

All joking aside, the fears of these events have seemed to become more pronounced, and people are actually preparing for these possibilities.

The number of various theories for doomsday have been broadcast on the National Geographic network's show Doomsday Preppers.

The top theories are, and not in any particular order:
1) World Economic Collapse
2) World overpopulation causing massive food shortages.
3) Massive Solar Flare destroying the world power grid.
4) Nuclear war
5) Pandemic
6) Terrorist biological attacks

The truth is that the doomsday fears has been an economic boon for various companies who provide supplies and equipment to survive the possible disasters.
There is one man in Kansas who is building a doomsday condo in a former missile silo that can house 70 people for four years, a couple of different companies that build doomsday bunkers that are self contained and up to 2000 square feet in size, and finally more than a few companies providing freeze dried gourmet survival foods.

Gas mask sales have increased, as well as the sales of military surplus that can be used for survival in harsh environments.

Finally there is a company in Houston that builds armored vehicles for celebrities that has branched out to building 'Doomsday" motor homes that are armor plated and EMP shielded.

The Department of Homeland Security has plans to get the political leaders out of Washington D.C. for a number of scenarios, however, as demonstrated by the response to Katrina and other recent disasters, would be inadequate to deal with any kind of massive natural disaster, meaning the the populace would be responsible for taking care of themselves.

While I am not worried about nuclear war, solar flares and anything dealing with the various theories dealing with the Mayan calender, I am prepared for a pandemic, which is easily dealt with by having a supply of food and water, which I have 90 days of food stocked up. I am not too worried about looters since it is my theory that the majority of people will be sick and unable to do anything.

Besides if there is a nuclear war, I live very close to a B1 bomber base, which would probably be hit rather quickly, and I would cease to exist a few seconds after the impact.

Romans didn't die off. They are still around. Again, you are mistaking the fall of a political entity with the ending of a people. Consider Zaire. It is no longer there, but the people didn't die off when the name disappeared.

I think you miss the point. The Roman empire had a population of 60 million in an area of 2 million square miles. Rome fell because it could no longer resource itself. It is one of many civilisations that over-consumed itself to destruction. However, our civilisation, on a planet of 7 billion is destroying its habitat and overconsuming its resources. If we can't manage our resources and habitat, there are no empty expanses to move into, we will be living on a rock with nowhere else to go.

There were no widespread famine during the fall of the Roman empire and I can find no indication of any sort of widespread food shortage.

The fall of the Roman Empire is more usually equated with the fact that the Roman Legions were no longer made up of Roman citizens but instead consisted of germanic barbarians often more sympathetic to the invaders than to Rome itself. Another culprit would be the affterefects of the Antonine Plague (perhaps smallpox or measles) which killed about half the empire's population.

Around the mid 5th century there was a huge change in climate which caused what is known as the as the Weltvolkswanderungen, a migration of tribes that started in the far east of Asia and pushed all away across the Asian continent into Europe with the Anglo-Saxons pushing into England from their tribal lands along the north coast of Europe. North Europe being colder and wetter than usual and unable to sustain crops it could fifty years before. It caused Germanic tribes to push south into the Roman Empire and there was little resistance because Rome couldn't afford to pay its armies because Romes couldn't access the necessary crops because of the climate change.

The 5th century was well after whatever tipping point led to the fall of the empire. The empire was split in two by Constantine during the 3rd century and his rule was really little more than a tempory halt to the decline that was then well under way.

Actually there is a collision or near collision predicted for 2037. The landing would be in the Pacific Ocean, 3 miles wide, triggering a giant tsunami effect on the West Coast of the USA. (among other places)

We have future ocean front property in Wyoming for sale if anyone is interested.

There may be a close approach in 2037, I do seem to recall that, but there is no way we could be sure where it would land. There are simply too many variables to deal with when a near earth asteroid is in final approach.

Actually, they do know where it would land. Here is a very cool video explaining it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaW4Ol3_M1o - and starring none other than Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson.

He makes the end of the world FUN!

Did you not watch this video? Dr. Tyson is quite clear we have no idea where it will hit or even if it will hit.

Ken, as I tried to explain, it all depends on if it passes through the gravitational keyhole during its close pass to earth.

If that happens, then they can predict with a bit of accuracy on where it will hit.

Of course, that is probably in the video.

Of course I like the very popular suggestion to prevent this from happening by firing a series of nukes at it. The idea is based on the theory that the nuclear explosions will push the asteroid into a new orbit.

I wonder how long it is going to take the proponents of this idea to figure out that without an atmosphere there is no shock wave and the explosions would not be pushing anything.

May I point out that if Yellowstone erupts, Idaho will be covered in up to 6 feet of volcanic ash?

I would also like to point out that parts of Idaho are still volcanically active.

In other words, it is a disaster area waiting to happen.

JLF, I don't think it matters where in this big wide world you go, Mama Nature is going to have some method right at hand, to smash you to bits. A volcano will typically provide better warnings than a tornado.

Which is why I want to build a megalithic dome home, they are tornado proof, fire proof, hurricane proof, earthquake proof, and if partially buried, able to survive just about any natural disaster.

And Texas has not been volcanically active in over 100 million years.

Of course, a former missile silo would be even better. Then I would be safe from a nuclear strike.

It might be more accurate to describe the Yellowstone super volcano as a disaster area currently between disasters? The current inflation and underground 'noises' associated with magma movements has garnered geologists rapt attention.

Some Olympic quality jumping to conclusions by people with very rudimentary reading in Roman Empire history? "Decline" for example, is a much more relevant word than "Fall". Estimates of mortality of around 30% of infected for the Antonine Plague hardly translate to 50% population loss. Between recent understanding of climate changes and their political effects and the Roman version of Republicans removing most of the tax base by exempting the Very Rich (Families whose members were exclusively the candidates for the Senate) land holdings from taxation, these well define the forces that diminished the power, influence and extent of the Western Empire. The Eastern Empire flourished nicely for a bit longer?

Well, it has been said that people that dont know their history are doomed to repeat it. So, lets see, the Republicans want to cut taxes on the rich, on corporations, who else?

See any parallels here?

Seriously. Ugh. Why the hell would anyone want to live like that? Give me light, and air. I like watching the sunrise, standing at my kitchen counter, and sleeping with the windows open as much of the year as possible.

I'm curious about the outlook you express as well, but that should be another thread.

well,.. this dome home isnt too bad looking http://www.domeofahome.com/
but I generally find domes to be quite ugly..
and if a 20 or 30 foot wave of water is coming at ya (like Katrina), then what???

Actually, the concrete dome houses can be rather stylish. One of the first was a beach front home in Florida which is very appealing.

Basically they blow up a balloon and line it with insulating foam, then rebar with areas left clear for windows and doors, finally they spray concrete over the rebar. To prevent wind damage to windows they are made of thick glass, and since there are no flat surfaces, the wind basically goes around them. These homes have survived direct hits by hurricanes and f4 tornadoes.

You can build them underground, which really only increases the insulation.

As for renovating an old missile complex, I read an article where one person set up direct feed hi res cameras leading to various flat panel displays in the complex and made them to look like windows.

There is an old SAC com bunker near here that is for sale, it is a three level structure with one level on the surface and two below the ground. The surface bunker has survived a number of brush fires and one tornado. The building is EMP shielded and was built to survive the shock wave generated by a nuclear strike on Dyess Air Force Base about 25 miles away.

And to be honest, the only world wide calamity that I am concerned with is a pandemic of some virus that has been isolated from the rest of the world and brought back by some wealthy idiot who went on some primitive vacation.

And the world wide riots of smokers who are sick and tired of having their smoking rights curtailed by holier than thou non-smokers. Non-smokers havent figured out that the danger of second hand smoke is far less than the other man made environmental pollutants that are far more likely to cause them health problems.

I don't think that one is going to meet the survivalist standard, Tj.

I've seen a few of the build-it-yourself domes that weren't hideous, but living in a cold, damp, concrete bunker doesn't seem much like living, to me.

LOL! Now I have this vision of all the smokers stopping to wheeze, and catch their breath, 1/3 of the way into a protest march.

Personally, I just tell the second-hand smoke nazis that the cigarette keeps my strangling hand busy.
