littlewonder -> RE: Holiday/Yuletide/Christmas/Winter music (12/3/2012 12:06:22 AM)

I just cannot for the life of me ever get used to modern Christmas music. It just hurts my brain. Give me old fashioned Silent Night, Ave Maria and Come All Ye Faithful.

I have sung in church choirs for decades. I would look forward to the Christmas season to sing the traditional carols and anthems during the Advent and Christmas services. For me, that is what Christmas music is all about.

angelikaJ -> RE: Holiday/Yuletide/Christmas/Winter music (12/3/2012 2:26:31 AM)

I love traditional Christmas carols with their hymnal harmonies.
:)

They are my favorites too, but I wanted to make a music thread for sharing across traditions.

AthenaSurrenders -> RE: Holiday/Yuletide/Christmas/Winter music (12/3/2012 4:30:22 AM)

For me Christmas officially begins when the little choirboy at King's College starts singing 'Once in Royal David's City'.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRuQCePY6Kc

For non-English people, this is an extremely famous traditional carol service every Christmas Eve. The little choir boys are for the most part young boarding school boys and this is the last thing they do before going home for Christmas. Apparently all the boys practice the solo but they don't tell them who will be performing it until a few minutes before to avoid nerves.

We listen to it on the radio every year. It's beautiful and this opening song gives me chills.

[sm=eeew.gif]
I can't stomach anything "traditional" when it comes to Christmas...
Not the songs, the music, the whole nativity thing, those friggin god-awful carols, Santa and even the food.

And WTF has Carol done to deserve such an accolade, huh??
Poor girl.

I have never understood why so many are [sm=ballchain.gif] to the whole sickly scenario. [:'(]

Trevor Pinnock is an acknowledged master of traditional instruments.
I find his rendition of traditional music to be appropriate.

Handel Messiah - Hallelujah, Trevor Pinnock

and the holidays would not be the same without The Mormon Tabernacle Choir
both religious and secular.
