Not sure if this one's been up already, but it's making the rounds:

It always happens to someone else (link).

Nothing graphic, but certainly not pleasant.

IWYW,

I have mixed feelings about this. I hate that people are hurt by drunk drivers, but I also hate it when tragedy is used to play on people's emotions and push a political goal. It feels manipulative. I thought showing the daughter was tacky. If that were me, and my dad did that, I would be furious. It just seems indecent.

Do these commercials work?

Pam

Over six million dollars in medical bills?

If one does drink and drive, then please make sure that your unfortunate victims die before they are carted off to a hospital!

Trying to keep irresponsible people from killing and maiming innocent people is a manipulative political goal? I thought it mostly a humanitarian reaction to the incredible tragedy America seems to feel is an acceptable price for young men to get beer down at all possible times. How does telling the truth become manipulation?
I'd prefer for beer and liquor ads to be banned from TV and kids from about 4th grade on to do regular stints helping out in ER/trauma wards, brain injury rehab centers, lung cancer wards and some time helping the paraplegics from amputations caused by foot infections that so many diabetics and the simply obese get. If they are going to make good life decisions, I Want them to know what reality is from the choices people make. Reality isn't manipulation. Altering perceptions of reality with advertising for the products that are killing us is.

The ads help, some. Some actual political will to stop the murder might do more? The Police know where people are getting drunk. It's child's play to stop them shortly after they leave parking lots.
My favorite is simple. You blow over the numbers, your car is now city property, sold at auction to help pay the civic bills. No appeal, no lawyers, no waiting. You walk home or take a taxi, your car is Gone.
In N. Europe, you lose your license for 6 months first offense? Jail time second offense? It's well over $2000 for the private school to get license qualified again? It's not suspended, it's Revoked. You have to start from zero, and their system actually trains drivers.

FR

Actually there is a lot to be said in favor of drunks driving.

1. It removes drunk drivers from the gene pool, and
2. It removes people who do not pay attention to drunk drivers from the gene pool.

So it seems to be a win-win situation as regards the improvement to the gene pool.

I admit to being a bit biased on this subject as my boyfriend in high school was killed by a drunk driver plowing into his car. And I gotta say...the idea that it was good for the gene pool for him to die...well, I won't say what I want to say.....

I am sorry for your loss.

I was hit by a car twice; no drunk driver in either. The first time I spent nine weeks in a hospital (concussion plus a later pneumonia); I suspect that I was hit by Divine intervention. The second time I was somewhat crippled for at least a month - I have no idea what spiritual cause - or whether Divine intervention - was responsible for that hit.

Maybe, but from what I understand, the drunk driver is far less likely of the two to be injured.

That does not matter. The evolution algorithms are far more about reproductive success than about what individual lives and what individual dies.

A drunk driver causing an accident will pay a price and therefore his reproductive success on average will be less than that of a non-drunk driver who does not cause an accident.

metamorfosis -> RE: Drunk driving viral vid (12/7/2012 8:39:18 AM)

Are you saying that drunk driving, or not paying attention to drunk driving, is genetic? Drunk driving, maybe. But not paying attention to drunk driving? I doubt "paying attention" is a factor very often. ETA: In other words, I don't think many of these accidents could have been prevented by the victims. Anyway, it seems like there must be a better way to get drunk drivers off the streets than killing them off.

Everything is genetic, from reaction time to observancy to intelligence. The higher the death toll, the faster natural selection responds to the threat.

I am in favor of sending them to a monastery for a number of years in order to decrease their reproductive success.

In that case, maybe we should let loose all the plagues of Moses and see who's left standing at the end of the day. I'm not buying your solution Rule, regardless of whether it's genetic or not. There has to be a better way.

My son came up with a solution when he was young... install breathalyzers on every car... mandatory... with a kill switch for disabling.

Had one of these on a work truck because 1 out of 10 employees using it was required. Its a pain!!! DrIving down the freeway full of work supplies & a trailer when the damn thing starts beeping. A@parently if you don't blow within certain time frame it kills the engine requiring a state licensed person & $500 fine to reset. But trying to drive a trailer& blow the thing on highway is safe & legal...go figure!

tazzygirl -> RE: Drunk driving viral vid (12/7/2012 10:32:53 AM)

Why isnt it designed to have to blow before the engine engages?

You want to put eight and nine year olds in an emergency department? I wouldn't put my 15 year old there. What kind of a sick fuck are you, wanting to permanently traumatized little kids???
