It varies a lot depending on your professor. Generally, IMO, they aren't nearly as strict as the teachers were in highschool or even middle school & elementary. Strange isn't it? My best guess is that after highschool, any education you have is education you've bought, so as long as you can make it cohesive enough to be understood when they read your writing, you'll be alright - barring of course that you wrote something worth while lol Spelling/grammar aren't so much 'graded'; though I do believe and agree with you, it may not be factoring into your grade directly, but indirectly based on their judgement of your overall merit as a student. So, it does count, but generally, it isn't a huge deal [:)]

I agree that typos and the occasional misspelt word are not signs of a lack of intelligence, but when people completely butcher the english language then it does reflect poorly on them. Someone mentioned that it's the interent and what is written is all we have to go on for an impression of a person, so how you express yourself is very important. people who use things like "ur", "2nite", "sexc" and other msn and internet "shortforms" drive me absolutely nuts, and i think it indicates a high level of laziness if someone can;t be bothered to type out the word "you're", or "i see" in stead of ic. It's an assumption, i know, but in general i figure if people are that lazy online, then they are probably lazy in real life, i don;t want to waste my time with them. Typos are a completely different story however....sometimes one's brain just goes too fast for the fingers to catch up, and thats understandable. Yes, i know, i sound like a bitch, but oh well....

Well said less. We are in absolute agreement here. If I get messages using the text message short forms I ignore it as a matter of principle. Although I have been known with the aid of a suitable lexicon to reply to them in church latin and even in another dead language... Cant understand it but they never did reply to me....

I'm anal about my grammar and spelling... as well as everyone else's grammar and spelling. [8D] I need to stop that. But I've had my moments of dyslexia and... just plain oddness. Why, just this morning, I was trying to say "boardwalk" and it tried to come out "broadway." And in writing and typing, I'm always mixing up letters like k and h, not to mention q, p, d, b, and g. Damned annoying, it is!

When I worked with criminal offenders we had a course on dyslexia because apparently 30% of offenders suffered from dyslexia and there are several different types. I never knew that dyslexia affects your hearing for instance, apparently the same sort of brain malfunction (had a beer can't think of the correct terminology.). Dyslexia has been put forward as one of the reasons young men get into problems while growing up. All the staff did this test to diagnose dyslexia and 35% of the staff suffered from dyslexia. Apparently just about everybody suffers from one form of dyslexia or another, it just depends if it is a problem to you or not. I'm no expert, I went on hundreds of these sort of courses, all a waste of tax payers money as far as I could see.

I can understand Dyslexia . and a few of the other learning disabilities ..... I can undestand the occasional whoops with a keyboared .. I do that one ALL the time .. thus you almost always see edited in my posts ... why .. cause I go back and check .. look for errors as the last thing I want to do is come off as lacking education to form simple words .... I can to some extent understand the short forms internet users use ..... but to butcher words my 10 year old spells with ease is beyond me. I have even seen it in people who say they hold all sorts of degrees ..... and in college ... you need to be able to at least spell some basic 8th grade words like ... preform, pedestrian, ok that one might be hard for some but there are other words .... how can you sit there and profess intelligence and not be able to say "I would do that" ..... but actually type I wood do that? people who spell "warn" as "worn" .... come on like TC said ... we judge people by what they type . if they can't take a few minutes knowing they have troubles and TRY and type the correct thing how can we take them even close to serious

It's too easy to check spelling and grammar these days. If you know you're not a proficient speller, then it is incumbent upon you to check yourself. If you just don't feel like taking the time, no matter how educated you are or aren't, then you don't have a bitch coming when someone comments on it. It does matter, as this is a text-based medium. If you're unwilling to put forth the effort to make sure your spelling and grammar are correct, then in essence to the rest of us, you're saying that we are that we're not worth your effort. It also says that you don't think a lot of yourself, if you're willing to put your worst foot forward.

Aphasia is a disorder affecting language. Some people get it so severe they can only answer yes and no question. Others just to the level that they can tell you everything about an object, except what it's called (eg: ith has four legs, you sit on it it had a back, yet can't think of the word "Chair") or can only think of one spelling of a word, even though they know it's not the spelling they want. With the different types of Dylexia the person might only be able to remeber one spelling of a word and use it all the time. (eg: using "to" all the time and never using "too") Then you have people with hearing problems that spell how they hear a word, and can't figure out the right way to spell a word. Yes spell check will help with a lot of this, but I am sure some of you have seen the emails that have every word written wrong, yet spell check doesn't catch it. If you type Aphasia into a google search you will find more info about it. Most of the time it is caused by a stroke or some sort of brain injury. My son had a stroke when he was 11, so we know the cause. Maybe my experience has made me more tolerant. However, I have to agree I believe using "u", "ic", and the like, should only be in chat when you are trying to get your point across quicker. Of course, you would know if the people you chat with have a problem with it.

Thank you for clearing this up for me ... I appreciate you taking this time to do so. Alot of things have become clearer for me now. I can see the situations your talking about having an impact on a persons responses . I am also now aware of people who profess learning disability but they actually spell a word correctly in one sentence . then in another one it is completely butchered . and I am not refering to the common "to" and "too" .. I mean other simple words . preform ... warn ..... boat ....simple basic elementary school words .. if they spelled it correctly one time why can't they continue to spell it the same through out the response they are giving

There are different forms of dyslexia. A friend of mine who has it does what you ask about... she might type would then a sentence later wood or even wud. She cannot distinguish between words that sound the same but are spelt differently and spell check doesnt help as they look the same to her. To me the content is more important than the spelling as I do understand some have problems and think we all can make typoes. I'm not very keen on text speak as think it makes it even harder for someone with dyslexia to read what is written. Oumae

I think we all do it sometimes.. misspell something.. for me it's usually that I am so passionate about what I am typing..that I don't proof read..and my brain gets ahead of my fingers. I do look at spelling..but not to the point where I judge someone about it. The ones that I might just roll my eyes at are the ones that protest to be of higher intelligence than the rest of us..yet can't spell apple to save their lives. Other than that..we all have our strong points and our not so strong ones. I know one of the sweetest guys in the world..smart as can be..yet he can't spell worth a damn....but that doesn't make me not like him.. or judge him.. I just read what I can..and go with it. Anyway, how many of us haven't typed something.. a common word..then looked at it.. typed it again..and it still didn't look right..then said "the hell with it" and moved on. ~Ticia

I know all about whoops' ... I undertand that cause I do make those errors too ... specially with these fat fingers of mine . I always hit an extra key and insert a letter here or there .. and I do read thru them all ..... I edit what I catch too .... my issue is like HisTicia .... they profess to be this great learned person and when you see their words you would swear it's a 10 year old writing the post ..... but thats just me I suppose

I read this thread with interest as I am one of the ones who point out (but almost always in private) grammatical or spelling errors. I don't do it with obvious typos...who doesn't make those? But when I see a post so badly mangled that it is hard to interpret, well, the professor in me just has to speak up. However, I don't judge anyone. In fact, I am naive enough (even after I have been proven wrong time and time again) to think that the person I email will be glad that someone cared enough to write him or her. What I am trying to say is that if I were to make error after error, I would want someone to point it out to me. I guess I just feel that if this is the medium with which we've chosen to present ourselves to others, we should take care to present our best selves. I don't think you have to run every post through spell check, but I do think it wouldn't hurt to read over what you have written and check for glaring errors. And, there is an edit button if you see a mistake after you post. I know I sound anal. I guess I am somewhat when it comes to this. But, honestly, I don't judge the person. I don't think that s/he is stupid or lazy. I realize that many have learning disabilities and simply can't help it. But when I see a thread on roll play instead of role play, well, I have to speak up...otherwise we're all going to be meeting at the bakery!

I don't really care that much about other people's spelling, but do think it's funny when you read something that questions the intelligence of others, in a post filled with spelling errors. We even had a post not long ago where someone picked on someone else for not using proper G R A M M E R. To me, if you are going to call someone stupid and insult them in type, at least make sure you spell it correctly.[;)]

I have over-abreviated when sending a text message. [allows 160 digits] When I have done so to the point-that my message is misunderstood. Then THAT IS a problem to me.

The person posting even typed it that way, four or five times over the course of the entire thread. Some things are just too funny to comment on. [;)] A admit to having two posting styles. The first, is typed how I talk, and includes far too much "This post is like, really cool.", and includes a bit too much foul language (I'm a potty mouth). The second goes back and edits the first in an often hopeless attempt to actually seem like I have something intelligent to say.
