I blame it all on rap and ebonics.
It's intentional, not for lack of education.

Nah, I've read some of your posts, caitlyn.  I will agree on a few too many "likes", but at least I understand what you are saying.  I've taught ESL (English as a Second Language) classes and I swear I can understand some of my students easier than I can read some of the posts here.

I see a lot of the "roll/role" mixups, as well as the more common "to/too"; "there/their" and the ever popular "your/you're".  I am hopelessly stuffy about this.  I am also the best speller I know (I refuse to have any false modesty about this...I am quite proud of my spelling prowess).

I'm climbing down from my soapbox now.

It's too easy to check spelling and grammar these days.  If you know you're not a proficient speller, then it is incumbent upon you to check yourself.  If you just don't feel like taking the time, no matter how educated you are or aren't, then you don't have a bitch coming when someone comments on it.  It does matter, as this is a text-based medium.  If you're unwilling to put forth the effort to make sure your spelling and grammar are correct, then in essence to the rest of us, you're saying that we are that we're not worth your effort.  It also says that you don't think a lot of yourself, if you're willing to put your worst foot forward.

feastie:

I could not agree with you more.  I made a similar comment in another thread after someone claiming to have high grades in College made about 3 or 4 spelling errors per sentence.  That person is obviously pursuing a BS degree!  Posts that are riddled with grammar and spelling errors lose impact if they require a decoder ring to read.  The really sad thing is that CM’s message posting box HAS a spell check function built in.  Unfortunately, some people mangle the spelling so badly that spell check now has a WTF function, because the words are so far off they might as well be written in Martian.

There is another consideration that has not been mentioned.  When we are invited to attend functions, my submissive answers those invitations in both our names.  I cannot imagine living in a situation where my partner's inability to answer simple invitations would be an embarrassment.  It is easy to make excuses for why this happens, but why make excuses when there are solutions?  Submissives, would you be proud of yourself if something you wrote were so poorly done that it reflected poorly on your Master?  Dominants, does your submissive make you proud when she cannot take the time to make replies that are intelligible? If those things are acceptable, then you have made a good match and you can wander through life flaming people for being Spelling Nazis instead of correcting these errors.

Being in a hurry to type something isn't an excuse.  Maybe, just maybe, if one took the time to read what they are typing, they could find better ways to say things OR, God forbid, use correct spelling and grammar.  This is not to say that everyone should be an English teacher, but it is to say that if you wish people to understand what you are saying, pay them the respect they deserve for listening to your thoughts, ideas, and comments.

As to disabilities such as dyslexia, I have enormous respect for those who have fought such conditions and become accomplished in presenting their thoughts.  I am fortunate to have never faced something like that, and I wonder if I would have succeeded as well as many have done.  Having said that, I will add that there are those who are simply too lazy to learn how to spell properly, and they attribute their failure to outside influences that they might, or might not have.

I don't really care that much about other people's spelling, but do think it's funny when you read something that questions the intelligence of others, in a post filled with spelling errors.

We even had a post not long ago where someone picked on someone else for not using proper G R A M M E R.

To me, if you are going to call someone stupid and insult them in type, at least make sure you spell it correctly.[;)]

HMMMmmm ... me thinkest me madest an error somewhere ... dam my typing hands and speaking with passion again ... <slaps the typing fingers for being bad> I will try in the future to look better at words like grammer lmaoooo thanks for pointing that out caitlyn
