Fair enough. That's probably true for most things (mis)handled by a drunk. But isn't the issue there really the drunkenness rather than the object misused? The car itself isn't inherently lethal in the way that a gun seems to be.

When it was the only thread, yes, Mike. After that, they were told to come here to discuss the political implications.

Your right, these things didn't happen back in the day. Society has degenerated into something that is desensitized to violence. Back in the day we didn't have graphically violent movies, video games or song lyrics. Much of the violence in this stuff is even glorified. We didn't have information overload, Internet and a gajillion TV shows on cable. When the nut cases crack they have way too many ideas to crack with.

Don't know how old you are, but check out a vintage Looney Tunes cartoon. How about Tom & Jerry? Popeye? The 3 Stooges? Batman & Robin (not a cartoon)? There was plenty of violence out there. Hell, Dukes of Hazzard had violence in it, made violence (albeit, the minimum necessary to get the job done) an acceptable action, and even when Bo & Luke were violent, there weren't ramifications. Were Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Space: 1999 violent?

Personally, I think fewer parents are being parents, pushing off the responsibility for parenting to others, like Day Care or schools. It's a different world out there.

Shall we get rid of knives, too? Or chop off all martial artist's arms and legs?

What provokes this kind of weirdness ?

I'd like to see an end to all the government sponsored and sanctioned drugs these kids are being fed. That would be a start for me.

Seems like personal responsibility is taking another vacation.....blame anyone but yourselves....

One of the most common comments on FB tonight is from parents who when they picked their kids up.....felt really relieved and happy.

I don`t know.......these kinds of things didn`t happen when I was a youngster.

What`s changed?

Well they certainly didn't happen as often, but they did happen.

This steaming pile of human excrement actually thinks these children were killed because we "took god out of our schools".
If you claim any affiliation with any religion and you do not denouce Bryan Fischer and the AFA then you have the same blood on your hand as the NRA.

This idiot is just one of many reasons why I am an atheist.

As I was watching the coverage today I saw something that I found quite odd and even disconcerting.
CNN,using what local feed I have no clue, was airing an interview with a little girl who looked to be about a first grader(certainly not much older)and all I could think was what the fuck was mommy thinking.
Why did any responsible adult think that their child should stand there and answer question about what they went thru today for a national tv audience's edification.

A few moments later the mother was getting interviewed,as she is talking to the reporter, another reporter with a small recorder slinks up and has a conversation with this same little girl. The Mother is engrossed in her own 5 minutes of fame and is totally oblivious to who this is ,or what he is saying to the little girl.
I wanted to smack this mother in her fucking head, her child just walked out of a school building in which a terrible, unspeakable tragedy had just ocurred, and she thought it was right and proper,in the childs best interests ,to get grilled on tv.

I knwo there is a disconnect to all of this bothering me on such a day,I know it makes no sense to get mad about such trivial nonsense.....but my god woman take your child home, squeeze her close.....don't expose her to the media.
This isn't about getting a dvr moment for yourself....I don't know,I just got so dammed mad, considering everything else that happened today I guess it just doesn't matter.

What the fuck did these kids ever do to him.

Nothing, of course.

Perhaps killing those his mother had taught and loved was somehow connected to killing her?

Or maybe, as I sometimes wonder, there's a form of hatred so poisoned and twisted that it strikes out at the innocent--children, animals--as a way of, well, I don't know what.

Heartbreaking questions.

Not to make excuses, Mike, but mother and child may both have been in shock and far from thinking clearly.

while I agree with you on the steaming pile of shit part, I am not going to become an atheist because this idiot is religious any more than I would expect you to stop being an atheist when you learn that some atheists are also wack jobs. But I can understand you blaming the NRA for this, after all no one would ever walk into a school with a knife and start cutting up people, right?

Have to admit i saw that interview with a child and couldnt fathom what parent would allow it, or what newsagency would think it appropriate.

As far as I know there are only two products legally sold, in this great country of ours, which when used as they were intended to be used leads to death.
Both of these products had strong oppressive lobbying groups in Washington.
The first product I am referring to has recently had it's lobbying grip broken...this would be the Tobacco industry.
The second product is of course the Firearms industry...we have yet to do anything about the pervasive influence of the NRA.
As a result here we are, discussing a heinous act ,one that was committed using legally owned guns, legally owned by ,perhaps ,the first victim...the shooters mother.

The thread on Off-Topic is all cleaned up, and open for those who need to express themselves without any potential political overtones. I'm assuming that means those of us who deal with something like this by talking about what went wrong are free to do so here.

Yes, discuss all aspects of this issue here. (As usual, refrain from making other posters the topic.)

There was a particular witness to the Colorado theater attack I saw interviewed several times, on different networks. She would describe seeing a dead child in the theater, and every time I saw her tell the story, the grin on her face got bigger.

The shooters aren't the only ones completely disconnected from their fellow humans.

I got the news in little bits. Someone I speak with by phone several times a day told me it had happened, then some radio reports, then changing accounts on my Washington Post app, followed by more radio reports. The informatin was constantly changing. As if what happened within the family wasn't awful enough, I understand the brother of the mentally disturbed (and that may change too) shooter had his face plastered all over the news, when they thought he was the killer.

No one is asking you to begin thinking for yourself - keep on believing whatever fairytale gets you through the night. But if you're going to follow the same psycho-babble as Fischer and not denouce him publicly then you share in his guilt by association.

Nice strawman argument - You know as well as I do that Adam Lanza could not have done nearly as much damage with a knife.

Thank you for playing, enjoy the lovely parting gifts.

Now for the adults in the room: we desperately need a serious discussion about gun control in this country. The 2nd amendment was written over 200 years ago - no one alive then could foresee the technology of today. As so many have stated about various topics here: Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is one definition of insanity. Based on that, the US has been insane on many issues for a very long time.

Quite. In my opinion all of them reporters and the whole CNN crew ought to be fired. What a bunch of unprofessional nitwits!

Sorry Tazzy,I can't get on board with that.I was told the same bullshit after the Colorado shooting.
I was asked to at least give it a day for grieving.
It was bullshit than, it was bullshit earlier, this is P and R,this was a gun violence slaughter on innocents.
If this isn't the place,if this isn't the time....when do we ,in this country ,get the courage to discuss the utter lunacy of "unfettered" and the rest of the Second ?

Ah, now there's a reasoned, insightful comment, well suited to the slaughter of 20 schoolkids.

When a martial artist leaves this, times 26, in his or her wake, do please let me know.

There's the level of response I have come to expect whenever someone mentions that guns are....lethal.
Is this one of those absurd arguments that Scalia likes to use ?
Cause god knows you got the absurd part down pat.
