tj444 -> RE: From the other side of the world (12/14/2012 4:54:19 PM)

FR-

The population of China is 1,347,350,000 (19% of the world population), the US is 314,936,000 (4.46%).. huge difference in population.. what percentage of each population (kids, women) are killed by guns vs other methods?.. yes, each country has crazy killers, etc..

And imo, it is children & women that are targeted.. as evidenced by the millions of children and women that are trafficked around the world as sex & worker slaves, etc.. they are targeted not just by the disillusioned & crazies.. but for profit also.. [>:]

Man slashes 22 children near China school

BEIJING -- A man with a knife slashed 22 children and one adult outside an elementary school in Henan province Friday morning, China's worst such incident in more than a year.

The attack was reminiscent of a spate of knife attacks on schoolchildren that took place across China in 2010. In most cases, the attackers were unemployed middle-aged men, leading to speculation that the assaults stemmed from economic and social discontent.

Friday's attack occurred at about 7:40 a.m. as children were arriving outside the gate of Chenpeng Village’s Wanquan Elementary School. The suspect, Min Yingjun, 36, allegedly slashed an elderly woman as well as the children. Local propaganda officials said later that Min had a psychological illness.

Not as bad as the massacre at the school in CT today, but still this is unnerving. But according to the story, this is not the first such incident.

It seems that children are the preferred target for the disillusioned and troubled. This in and of itself says a lot for human civilization, IMO.

I think they are either such cowards and think the kids can't fight back or they want to make sure their act is as terrible as possible so they won't be forgotten. Either way they are sick bastards and have made me rethink my position on the death penalty.

This doesn't seem a sensible post on a day were 20 children are guned down in an American school.

I didn't realize we weren't allowed to be sad for more than one incedent at a time.

It only goes to show that if they want to kill, they will find a way... guns... bombs... knives....

Such sadness.

Guns and bombs are far more efficient than knives at killing people. The sensible thing is to make killing people as inefficient as possible, which is to stop people getting hold of guns and bombs.

Or we could try to find out why are kids are growing up to think that this is the answer to their problems.

Oh come on.... you can surely give me more details than that.

You implied 22 two children were killed in a knofe attack, yet the article you linked said 20 children were killed in similar knife attacks and the 22 were injured. You either can't read or relay information. one r the other.

She said that the knife was efficient enough to kill 22 kids. She didn't say they all died in the last incident. Maybe you could use a few reading lessons also.

This is a puerile argument. Cars have killed more people by several orders of magnitude. They are incredibly efficient killing machines. By your reasoning, they should be on the top of your ban list.

Intended function of the device comes into play here, like it or not.

People do not use guns, knives, or bombs to get to work, get to the grocery store, or take the kids to school or soccer practice. Cars are not designed with purpose of max killing power in mind. Guns are. Only on rare occasion does someone intentionally use a vehicle for purpose of murder.

Car accidents are called -accidents- for a reason.

Dude, I hate to tell you this but there have been premeditated murders where a car was the weapon.

Edwynn -> RE: From the other side of the world (12/15/2012 12:24:25 AM)

Dood.

Intended function of the device.

Read enough times till that detail sinks in.

People have used hammers, screw drivers, a log of firewood, a stick, a paper clip, a baseball bat, battery acid, antifreeze, prescription medicines, ... the list goes on, for purpose of intentional homicide.

jlf1961 -> RE: From the other side of the world (12/15/2012 12:28:43 AM)

You said accidents in your post, thus the intended use of the device was not as a weapon.

My point is that if you really want to kill someone, you are going to use whatever you have available.

Edwynn -> RE: From the other side of the world (12/15/2012 12:30:49 AM)

Read the edit.

It proves your point and mine both.

But if the intention is murder, a gun or knife, being solely intended for that task, is more efficient to the purpose than is a vehicle.

How silly do people want to get, here?

Stick to reality, it's not as terrible as some of you make it out to be.

jlf1961 -> RE: From the other side of the world (12/15/2012 12:34:07 AM)

I made my reply as you were doing the edit.

Edwynn -> RE: From the other side of the world (12/15/2012 12:42:28 AM)

I am not an across-the-board gun banner, so it be known.

But in my book, the right of citizens generally to live with the least amount of threat from whatever source outweighs the putative 'rights' of some individual.

jlf1961 -> RE: From the other side of the world (12/15/2012 12:50:05 AM)

It is not the banning of guns that would have changed the outcome of what happened today, just like banning machetes in China would not have prevented incidents like the one that happened there.

However, reasonable steps can be taken to make such things harder to accomplish.

One of the biggest problems on the old sail powered ships were knife fights between the crew members.

A crewman on a sail powered vessel needs a knife.

Solution, when the crewmen boarded the ship, they were made to present their knives and the tip was broken off it, making the knife useless as a weapon but still functional for the requirements of the job.

Modern video games, plain and simple.

Do you have any evidence to support this assertion?

It's been my experience that video games, modern or not, are a convenient scapegoat in general, but nothing more in all but a few cases where they may have had a contributory role in causing a preexisting problem to become manifest.

The video game reasoning as well as violence in movies and tv was used, unsuccessfully in a few court cases.

We do not need guns or knives at work, today. At least not most of us.

But in the spirit of what you are saying, rubber bullets should be the only ammunition legally sold.

and all the Dirty Harry shoot em up tv shows & movies.. its the whole culture.. but really, when the Prez of the US does basically the same thing.. like illegally invades another country based on a blatant lie (which was so weak it couldnt convince NATO & most other allies), then Americans try to justify it cuz "he was a bad guy", that whole message of we-can-do-what-we-want-and-blow-you-away filters all the way down.. JMO..

Compare the number of people who play video games to the number of people who pull this bullshit and you may find that's not true. Now I am not surprised that the ones who are so quick to pull a gun play violent games, but I doubt they would be any different if the games weren't around.

Oddly enough, none of the firearms owned by me, my family, friends or anyone in the various clubs I've belonged to over the years has managed to kill anyone. I guess we've all just been using them for something other than their intended function.

Inanimate objects are not responsible for the behavior of the people who use them.
