Oh ffs.. we are talking about kids shooting kids. We arent discussing sharp shooters killing people.

If you cant see the difference, I cant help you.

Tazzy, a 20 year old is not a kid. He is an adult. Sorry but that is just the facts, unless you consider an adult 21 because they can drink.

18 is the legally recognized age of an adult, they can vote, join the military and die for their country, they just cant drink.

When you say kids killing kids, i think of some 10 year old taking mommy and daddy's glock or beretta to school to kill a bully and kills a few others for the hell of it.

You want to keep "assault weapons" out of schools, I want to keep every gun out of our schools. I dont know about you, but I have a grandson in public school, and I worry about little bobby bringing a gun to school in his book bag cause he saw on tv it makes people leave other people alone.

Columbine.. kids... yes?

This one, mentally, was little better than a kid. The discription of him was little more than someone with Asperger syndrome. People with Asperger rarely emotionally mature beyond the teenage years. Something within that kid snapped. Rarely does someone with that syndrome intentionally hurt anyone. But the way people describe him, it fits.

We may never know why he snapped.

There's a nice friendly way to begin a conversation.
I think that was how I first asked my wife out.....I wonder why that marriage didn't work out [8|]

You worry about little bobby bringing a gun to school....I worry why little bobby has access to the weapon in the first damm place.

I misunderstood, I apologize.

Now do you see my point about the bullied kid taking mommy and daddy's pistol to school?

As I said I posted the only wording I could think of that would cover every weapon with the capabilities that you and mike are concerned with.

You get that to a congressman and senator and get it introduced, I will sign what ever petition you two come up with.

Realistically I think it wont get through the republican controlled house.

tazzygirl -> RE: Then Amend the Constitution (12/17/2012 10:54:14 PM)

Days before Christmas 20 elementary students were killed by a mentally ill "man/boy" who also killed his mother. This one wont be forgotten. Parents wont forget who stood in the way of legislation. This will be a marking point for the next election.

I can answer that, because Little Bobby's mom and dad keep the damn thing in a shoe box on the shelf in the fucking closet, or in the drawer in the bedside table.

How do I know that, simple, lock boxes for pistols do not even come close to the number of handguns sold each year.

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

It's seems pretty simple to me, regulated but not infringed.

So tell me why the people who are against law abiding Americans owning fire arms, not putting their mouths, pens, money and efforts into Amending the US Constitution???

And just to be clear, I neither own nor do I desire to own a fire arm.

When the SCOTUS ruled a couple years ago that DC couldn`t outright ban firearms within the city(the ban was illegal,IMHO),they also reaffirmed the rights of states to regulate firearms.

This includes trigger locks,gun safes,10-round magazine limits,background checks,etc.

These are all reasonable things and constitutional.

And most likely the outcome of this tragedy.

NOT changing the Constitution.

The histrionics and overplaying won`t get you guys anywhere.

Tazzy by the time this is over no one will ever forget,,,this nation is going to have to watch the funerals.
I lived on Long Island on 9/11 as bad as the day itself was.the funerals....one after another were heart wrenching.
This week we will be witness to 26 separate funerals ,they will be heart wrenching, they will be seared into the nations memory.
This is what some here just do not get, this is a tipping point, this one will not just fade into memory to be dredged up the next time someone shoots a large number of people.
This one is the straw that broke the camels back.

And being the pessimist that I am, I figure it this way, since two republican senators said we have to do something to prevent this tragedy from happening again, it will go through the senate with no problem.

It will get to the house where Boehner is dead set against letting President Obama getting any thing accomplished, and with the help of NRA and gun manufacturer money, persuades every republican in the house to vote against it.

The public reason given, "the first ban failed to do anything it was supposed to do, so this one wont work either, give us a comprehensive bill and we will approve it."

You could probably introduce a bill that lists by name model and each variant every rifle that has a firing rate of 30 rounds and higher and Boehner would not let it pass as "not comprehensive enough."

They tried to stop the bill that eliminated the tech 9 after Columbine, and nearly did.

Get dirt on every house republican, pics of them sleeping with multiple women, men, dogs sheep whatever and you have a slight chance. IMO

Remember the Brady bill? The first time it was introduced was during Reagan. It did not pass until Clinton.

tazzygirl -> RE: Then Amend the Constitution (12/17/2012 11:14:05 PM)

Something else that is making its round on the web....

One guy tries to use a shoe bomb = Everyone at the airport takes their shoes off. 31 school shootings since Columbine = no changes.

THIS! ^ The money keeps rolling in, nothing that matters changes, the workers get poorer, the rich are happy.
Dupont, Monsanto, RJR or ADM kill more Americans every month with their products than mass murders did in our whole history. The visuals are hidden in hospital wards and don't make the front page. The people are just as dead. Only they weren't killed by the insane, but by the greedy. But who cares, that's the American Way?

The people thinking parents will change American politics have no idea how many gun owners sat the last election out as they really didn't have a dog in the fight. Look for the current paralyzing polarization of our politics to move to a whole new level. And if any new gun laws do get passed, expect the cry for yet more when they totally fail to prevent the next, and worse, tragedy.

JeffBC -> RE: Then Amend the Constitution (12/17/2012 11:29:10 PM)

There is no need to amend the constitution. No "right" is unlimited and for good reasons. There are always going to be some weapons that I'd prefer if my neighbor didn't have. In the extreme we have fun things like sarin gas and biologicals. I have to assume that at the time those words were written there was probably also a range of weaponry out there and some of the more esoteric and deadly stuff was not what they had in mind. So if we can agree that a black/white answer is unlikely in this case then it makes sense that we debate (and re-debate if necessary) what the perfect shade of grey is.

Alternately, if you wish to be a literal reader and take the phrase "shall not be infringed" to mean "at all", then I suspect we could probably get a supreme court ruling to that effect and an amendment passed in the same day. Because honestly I don't think many Americans would be cool with their neighbor keeping and bearing any possible arms at all. Man, we've made some truly nasty stuff.

Powergamz1 -> RE: Then Amend the Constitution (12/17/2012 11:50:46 PM)

Looking at the list of knee jerk 'solutions' presented just in this forum, I'd say that your assessment is sadly accurate. Nothing will be done about the underlying issues, while superstitious fears will be repeatedly inflamed for profit, either financial or political.

And as the media incites more and more suicides to go out in a blaze of headlines, the 'othering' mob with pitchforks will head for the next Quasimodo (the mentally ill, rap music, foreigners, unbelievers... the 'different').

There are 1000's of "regulated" gun control laws on the books...1000's

I really wish the Anti 2nd and the anti gun crowds would at least be a little bit intellectually honest...

I think the "anti guns crowds" would also appreciate a little bit intellectually honesty. Personally I think I should be able to hold a pro gun regulation position that it's not a matter of the quantity but the quality of regulations and not get dismissed as anti-gun.

The Swiss very noticeably have different regulations than we do, why can't I talk about that without proposing a change to the Constitution? I think I should be able to talk about the vast difference between the Swiss model our Founders pictured and the FUBAR that actually exists and how we dig our way out of that FUBAR through regulation without being labelled intellectually dishonest.

cloudboy -> RE: Then Amend the Constitution (12/18/2012 7:07:20 AM)

One solution might be to attach strict liability standards to inherently dangerous weapons like automatic weapons. This way the liability for responsible gun ownership can be transferred directly to manufacturers, purchasers, and owners of such weapons.

The Gun industry would then have to share in the high external costs associated with its business and as such it would become more self-regulating.
