The death rate for young black men is staggering but few here give a rat's ass. Oh my god 20 white kids die, amend the United States Constitution!

During the 80's when the drug wars were at their height. A black male growing up in the liberty city section of miami had a statistically better chance of being shot before age 18 than a soldier sent for a 1 year tour in Viet Nam. When I saw that, I thought they were fucking crazy until I actually saw the numbers posted in the Herald.

Its mostly inner city kids shooting inner city people, but they are black so nobody gives a shit.

According to the CDC the leading cause of death among black men aged 15-34 is black men. It's sad and unfortunate but that's going to be a tough sell to society in general to get involved. Sounds like an excellent opportunity to mobilize the black community to try to amend what is happening in their own back yards. Since you appear to be somewhat in the loop is there anything happening on that front? The CDC also reports that AIDS is much higher among black men and women. They suggest that this is because black men become infected in prison and then infect their partners upon release. I was not aware of that. Read more about it here.

If you don't commit crimes, there's an awesome chance you'll never go to prison except as an employee or visitor. I think you raise a really good point, Michael. I too work with a marginalized segment of society, though my work is with injection drug users compared to your work with inner city people. But I think that there are a lot of parallels because the marginalized are often viewed as disposable. Its so sad that it takes a tragedy like Sandy Hook to get us talking about something that we should have been talking about all along. The CDC lists homicide as the leading cause of death among black youths in this country, while all other classifications of youths list accident as the leading cause of death. Yes Mike, the children who died at Sandy Hook were all 6-7 years old. But the loss of a child, whether they were 6 years old or 15 years old, IS STILL THE LOSS OF A CHILD DUE TO GUN VIOLENCE. You think that it hurts a black mother less than one of the mother's from Sandy Hook when her child gets murdered?

I dont think its a matter of no one giving a rat's ass, I think its a case of the problem just being so huge its beyond truly fixing.. I believe over half the population in Houston is black, you can see geographically how different each area is, the rich are mostly white (& they live in certain areas), the poor & extremely poor mostly black live in the rest of the city.. that means half the city is poor & crime ridden.. you can see the recent local crime in each area by looking it up online.. (minor, burglary, violent).. how exactly do you fix that? Personally i find that depressing and scary.. there is an American (former politician) who has been saying that in 20 years the US will basically be a third world country.. while that sounds an extreme change, even to me, when I look at this city, I see how it is possible that the US spiral down to that..

A person who is outside a community cannot 'fix' that community. I can't solve the problems of the next town over. Only those people can. They can't fix the problems in my town. Only I and my neighbors can. re: the inner city minority communities, it seems like every time someone stands up and says "people, let's take responsibility for our own actions, let's encourage our children to stay in school, let's be parents instead of fellow gangstas." they get shouted down by the usual 2 suspects from NYC and Chicago.
