To buy a car you have to have a license.
To buy explosives for farm and ranch use, you have to have a permit.
To buy large bulk amounts of ammonia nitrate granulated fertilizer, you have to have a form on file with the ATF.

To buy as gun you just need to pass a background check. No training, no permit, nothing.

You have to have a license to buy and operate a car to prove you can do so safely. That makes sense.
To buy explosives you have to have a permit to prove you are going to use them responsibly. That makes sense
To buy bulk fertilizer, they want to know you are not going to mix it with fuel to make explosives. That makes sense.

To buy a gun, they just want to make sure you dont have a criminal record or a record of violence, or are mentally unstable. No one cares if you know the first thing about safely using a gun, know how to safely store a gun, they dont care if you know jack shit about a gun.

Anyone see a problem with this?

It must be bloody galling for the responsible gun owners who have a clue what they're doing, when you put it like that. Do they even bother to check the criminal record or psych history thing, on that level? It's the sort of thing where it'd be a lot easier to just tick a couple of boxes and ignore the checks than possibly loose a sale...

Fellow -> RE: Did you know? (12/19/2012 1:25:21 PM)

Here in Canada we need to pass a training course as a requirement to buy a gun. I think it is reasonable. The basic course does cost around 150 dollars. The cost would be a problem in the US (minority discrimination issue).

It can be, I have a neighbor who just moved in a few months ago.

Nice enough family. Fairly intelligent husband.

Due to a rash of home invasions out here lately he bought a Glock.

Took it home, slapped a mag in it, and put a bullet through his 96inch flatscreen tv.

Well, at least he knows that it works.
Is that an act of God for insurance purposes?

Incorrect. In CA you have to take a test, prove you know how to load, unload, safety the weapon and clear the weapon and pass a background check both federal and state.

To carry a weapon outside of the house on my person, I have to take a carry concealed permit which involves a course, a practical test and an interview with my local law enforcement.

What I did not say was the round went through the tv, through the wall into to the nursery. The baby was not in there and the round did not come close to the crib, so even if the child had been in there, there was no danger.

BUT, he did sign up the next day for a firearms training course.

Register to drive on public roads, yeah... but just buy? I bought my first car (a typical teenage boy's first car that I thought I could fix up) a month before I got my licence.

Legally, it's a misdemeanor: Negligent discharge of a firearm.

Moonhead -> RE: Did you know? (12/19/2012 1:40:39 PM)

That's a result then, and he's a lot better off getting a wake up call from putting a round through his telly than through his child.

loaded a weapon with no target or intent to fire.
either disengaged or failed to engage the safety(s)
pointed loaded weapon at something he didn't intend to shoot
actually pulled the trigger while pointing a weapon at something he didn't intend to shoot
(per later addendum) fired a weapon inside a home where over penetration resulted in the round entering a possible inhabited space he could not see.

5 basic safety mistakes the very first time he held the firerm.

And people ask me why I say most gun owners should not have guns.

California is the exception to the rule, not the norm

You made a blanket statement that was designed to inflame, when it's not correct. CA is not the exception, many states have similar laws. I know the process in CT, was pretty close to the same. (As a general rule of thumb, if it goes blue in the election, they have tighter gun laws)

Personally, I do wish they'd require a course and practical test on the first purchase, rather than the written test and safety check. There are definitely some people that I don't like being at the range with.

Good point. Never have figured that out. To register a vehicle in texas, you need a license, how do they do it?

OsideGirl -> RE: Did you know? (12/19/2012 2:50:20 PM)

In most states, you don't need a license to register a vehicle. You need a license number to get insurance, which most states require to register a car. For corporations, every driver of their vehicles submit their driver's license number to the insurance company.

I dont know how others do it.. I have a company registered in Montana specifically for vehicles.. I download the registration form from the Montana DMV, copy my company docs, and send that with the vehicle registration & my money to the Montana DMV.. no insurance docs, no DL info to simply register the vehicle that way.. i get the license plates and the new vehicle registration (in the company name) in the mail..

Powergamz1 -> RE: Did you know? (12/19/2012 7:59:34 PM)

It would be easier to have a discussion on how certain people who shouldn't have fireams could be screened for at time of purchase if some people (coughcoughcouopcoughcough) didn't throw all these red herrings into the mix. The imaginary license to buy a vehicle is a false equivalency.

So, treat gun ownership and public carry of guns as 2 distinct cases, and logically evaluate how much and what sort of training and evaluation would offer a rational chance of reducing tragic incidents.
