Actually, I am not using the driver's license as a comparison except that a car is, when operated correctly, less dangerous than a gun, and you need a license for a car. Why not a gun?

There is no US state that requires an automobile owners license just to buy a car. Operators/drivers licenses have nothing to do with purchasing one. I would say both a gun and a car when operated properly are about as dangerous the car perhaps a little more so. but that could be explained away as cars are used far more often so they cause a lot more death and destruction.
