This is a thread designed to create gun-banners. Leave them to it.

Not sure what's going to create gun-banners about showing people our interest in guns has nothing to do with killing people.

The usual convos about guns online tend to focus on things like self defence, while this one has been focusing on fun.

IWYW,

Speaking of which, Master came home with one of my Christmas presents early. I'm now the proud owner of a Springfield Amory stainless steel 1911. Now, the only one on my want list is a 1928 Colt Woodsman 22.

I'm a little confused. Some people are answered about what they shot with and some people are responding with what they shot at.

I will answer both:

Shot with: Glock 21 chambered in .40 S&W. I do not trust a trigger safety. It doesn't have nearly the kick of my carry gun though. I carry a Springfield XD9 sub-compact. That thing is tiny so it kicks like a mule. I think it'll bite like a crocodile, but I hope to never be in a position to find out.

Shot at: I was 14. I had (still have) a model 94 Winchester chambered in ,32 Winchester Special. I shot a deer. Right through the heart. The animal kept moving though so I put two more rounds through it's hindquarters. It didn't stop moving. It went up the hill, down the hill, and started back up again. All while I was chasing it. The bastard decided to give up the ghost at the bottom of the ravine.

I am not a big guy. I was even smaller back then. It was hell trying to carry it up the hill.

On the plus side it was the tastiest animal EVER.

SECONDED!

Most fun I had was a 40 cal machine gun during basic in the Army. Everyone who got to sit behind that thing had a shit eating grin on their face.

Funnest thing I shot at? I haven't had that experience yet. I'd like to get rid of my hunting virginity and bag a huge deer (don't care about rack size) that could feed a family of four for 10 years or something silly like that.

I did shoot a crow out of the air while it was flying, but I think I cheated. It was attempting to land on a branch so it was slowing down.

Why on earth would you want a woodsman, delicate break prone expensive parts and expensive mags. Get a .22 conversion kit for the 1911.

I've shot a M-16A2, M1A1, M1, 240G, M2, MK-19, M203, and the training round variant of an AT4 to name some of the "cool" ones.

The Woodsman was like butter, it was so smooth. It was a fantastic target gun and it was flat out beautiful. The carvings were just gorgeous.

I am agreeing with OsideGirl here.

A .22 conversion kit for a 1911 is NOT going to be the same thing as a Colt Woodsman. It's not even the same animal.

Alright, I'm only going to partially agree with her: I'd choose the Ruger Mark II or III over the Woodsman. But that's just a personal preference - it fits my hand better.

Excellent .22 pistol. It's my choice over anything else out there though if you can find one of those High Standard models, they are not a bad choice and are extremely accurate. I had one, the Supermatic Trophy, That eventually went full auto on me after many 1000's of rounds. I had to repair it.

wasn't that a .50 or .30 cal?

The deer was not the bastard in your story.
He was fighting for his life. So sad.

Unless you are vegan, you cause far more animal cruelty than any hunter.

When I got out of the Marine Corps, I promised never to hunt deer until the deer were armed. But, I do understand and accept arguments as to herd thinning etc.

I knew the owner of a machine gun range. In the late 90s I had the pleasure of shooting virtually every type of machine gun. However, the firearm I had the most fun with was a scoped 50 caliber sniper rifle with exploding rounds. I could have legally purchased anything I fired.

I do not understand the NRA. I can buy almost anything I want so long as I follow the rules. Sometimes I think what the NRA is really afraid of are the mental checks and maintenance of records on people. They may have a point about that.

The funniest thing that occurred at the range was the stupidity of the DEA. The owner had something bigger than usual; measured in millimeters. The DEA agents wouldn't listen and cranked the barrel up and fired it before he could stop them. The owner ran to his truck and finally found where the projectile landed. You could tell by the fact a gigantic oak had been reduced to kindling. A farmer came out and said "firing something a little bigger today xxx." I thought that xxx had gotten away with just cleaning up and planting trees. Later, I learned that the farmer needed a new barn and xxx paid for it.

I am a progressive who loves firearms and target practice. I do not mind regulations. Automobiles require testing and regulations so why not firearms?
