At my high school, the parking area was actually not on school property. A property owner actually allowed students to park on a vacant lot that was basically useless for anything, so every pickup had a rifle in the back window.

Hell, we had rifles and bows in the back window ON the property.
My dad owned property adjacent to my homeroom teacher and sometimes, Id 'stray'.
I remember once showing up a few minutes late and my homeroom teacher simply asked if Id gotten a big buck on his property that morning.
I told him that if I ever did, he was gonna get a big bag of steaks.

In Western Carolina in the '60s, the notion of not allowing rifles in trucks on school property (or knive in pockets), would have been laughed at as crazy talk.

DTP the part I think you missed was CT (and most schools nation wide) are gun free zones.

That's actually a federal law. You can't even have the weapon locked in your trunk unloaded.

While it is considered a felony offense, the laws concerning carry on non-Federal properties are State laws.

In Tennessee, its perfectly legal for a carry permit holder to be armed while dropping their kid off at school so long as they stay in the vehicle and do not handle the weapon. This has been the law for several years now.

We also have legislation moving through to allow carry permit holders to keep their sidearms locked in their vehicles at their place of employment including schools.

sorry but in the early 90s it became a fedral offense to have a firearm within a thousnd ft of a school

No it didn't.

Try actually reading the exact words of that federal statute which were cited right here in Post #60.

Or stick to old wives tales, not my problem.

Where I went to high school it was more shotguns during upland bird season (pheasant, dove, chucker, etc.) rather than rifles, but one of my classmates built and fitted a new stock for his hunting rifle in wood shop.

Wait... talk about gun control has been banned? That's some meta-irony right there.

There were temporary restrictions on high-capacity talk about gun control, but they were lifted when the violence went down.

It wasn't banned, per se, not permanently.

They just shot down all the threads about it, and made a new thread where all the smoke can go, safe from the light.

Apparently, this has been recognized as an unfortunate move in hindsight.

When I was in HS, we had to give an instructional speech in English. One of my classmates brought in his shotgun and showed/explained how to break it down and clean it. For my presentation, I made bananas foster. Both presentations were on the same day, so we had guns and alcohol in the same classroom. Pretty damn funny in retrospect.

There was a show on Discovery Channel called "How booze built America".

They were discussing the American revolution:

The primary beef was the taxing of molasses which was used to make rum.

Some of the larger rum makers also grew tobacco.

The rifles that the revolutionaries were using were hidden in Taverns and the meetings were also held there.

I looked at Master and said, "So the country was built on Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, interesting."
