the french didnt start doing crap till we started winning. For most of the revolution we were swinging in the wind

Try again.

Even Wiki will educate you somewhat.

Actually, they did do some, but they did not get that involved until after we started winning battles, then it still took them some time to figure out a way to justify getting overtly involved.

farglebargle -> RE: Do Legal Visitors to The USA have "Freedom Of Speech" Rights? (12/26/2012 4:26:31 AM)

How long does it take a Frenchman to hate the English and side with *anyone* fighting them???

Moonhead -> RE: Do Legal Visitors to The USA have "Freedom Of Speech" Rights? (12/26/2012 4:44:23 AM)

During the second world war, it took the whole length of the German occupation of France in a lot of cases. Try googling "Vichy government" and "French resistance". You could have a look for "collaborator", "quisling" and "partisan" while you're at it as well.

jlf1961 -> RE: Do Legal Visitors to The USA have "Freedom Of Speech" Rights? (12/26/2012 4:45:30 AM)

The french would have folded in WW1 if the Brits had not stepped in.

Moonhead -> RE: Do Legal Visitors to The USA have "Freedom Of Speech" Rights? (12/26/2012 5:14:17 AM)

Which could well be why the resistance was determined not to go under to the Germans again during the second one.

The french have always taken the easy option.

My OH said to me this morning that all throughout history, the French have almost always taken the easy way out of any situation.
They are known by historians as turncoats - as has been depicted at various points throughout history.
The two world wars were no different. The resistance were great whilst the majority of the french and their rulers just rolled over.
In fact, the only exception she can think of is William of Normandy who eventually invaded Britain and killed our king Harold.

Same for the channel tunnel - and I'm not just talking about the recent one either.
Whatever we Brits wanted got rail-roaded by the french.
That's why the majority of us Brits didn't want it in the end.
It's also run by a french company - at a great loss.

Then your OH is full of crap. [;)] I wouldn't describe the French revolution, Napoleon's European campaign, or the establishment of colonies throughout Africa as following the path of least resistance, myself.

Thats nonsense. Would you not say the $1 Million France gave America at the start of the war had a tad to do with it. Not to mention French support for the American Navy and French attacks on British supply ships ?

Anyhow we are getting off topic a tad but can debate this further if you wish.

wittynamehere -> RE: Do Legal Visitors to The USA have "Freedom Of Speech" Rights? (12/26/2012 11:36:27 AM)

Not even American citizens have freedom of speech anymore, so legal visitors surely don't either.

Agreed, it shows little understanding of French history, let alone the clashes they had with us.

mnottertail -> RE: Do Legal Visitors to The USA have "Freedom Of Speech" Rights? (12/26/2012 11:39:17 AM)

Since it has been held that the bill of rights is extended specifically to the states, I think that it is also extended to illegal visitors.

Having said that, I know that Paris is the capital of France, they make some fair wines, and that has nothing at all to do with the bill of rights.

For any and all of you foreigners who just love to run your mouths about the USA I tell you this... You all just holler for us next time the Germans and Japs come over the hill.

*snort* that sounds likely [8|][8|][8|]

You really think so?? [:'(]

I haven't found a decent french wine yet.
Or a spanish or italian one come to think of it.

But that's just my preference.

Moonhead -> RE: Do Legal Visitors to The USA have "Freedom Of Speech" Rights? (12/26/2012 12:27:46 PM)

Liebfraumilch or Retsina?
[:'(]
For heaven's sake, mate, you've just dismissed the whole of drinkable (and certainly the models for Aussie and American) European wine in one fell swoop. Fair enough if you prefer beer or spirits, but FFS...

Ever since the French imported California (and others') grapes after WWII, gradually...wine grapes have gone global.

'Fruitless' for any concern about where a wine is made, it's like pot now, so they tell me. If it is good, it doesn't matter where it was 'made.'

Powergamz1 -> RE: Do Legal Visitors to The USA have "Freedom Of Speech" Rights? (12/27/2012 7:55:11 PM)

They pay sales taxes, property taxes, business taxes, and income taxes. I doubt if they pay into Social Security.

Do legal residents who are not citizens pay taxes?

Pam

tazzygirl -> RE: Do Legal Visitors to The USA have "Freedom Of Speech" Rights? (12/27/2012 8:18:52 PM)

They do.

Noncitizens (aliens) who work in Social Security-covered employment must pay Social Security payroll taxes,
including those who are in the United States working temporarily and those working in the United States without authorization.

Moonhead -> RE: Do Legal Visitors to The USA have "Freedom Of Speech" Rights? (12/28/2012 4:45:28 AM)

So they pay taxation without getting any representation, then?
Strange how it's only their right to shoot their mouths off that's getting complained about, really.
