During the second world war, it took the whole length of the German occupation of France in a lot of cases. Try googling "Vichy government" and "French resistance". You could have a look for "collaborator", "quisling" and "partisan" while you're at it as well.

The french have always taken the easy option. My OH said to me this morning that all throughout history, the French have almost always taken the easy way out of any situation. They are known by historians as turncoats - as has been depicted at various points throughout history. The two world wars were no different. The resistance were great whilst the majority of the french and their rulers just rolled over. In fact, the only exception she can think of is William of Normandy who eventually invaded Britain and killed our king Harold. Same for the channel tunnel - and I'm not just talking about the recent one either. Whatever we Brits wanted got rail-roaded by the french. That's why the majority of us Brits didn't want it in the end. It's also run by a french company - at a great loss.

Since it has been held that the bill of rights is extended specifically to the states, I think that it is also extended to illegal visitors. Having said that, I know that Paris is the capital of France, they make some fair wines, and that has nothing at all to do with the bill of rights.

They pay sales taxes, property taxes, business taxes, and income taxes. They do. Noncitizens (aliens) who work in Social Security-covered employment must pay Social Security payroll taxes, including those who are in the United States working temporarily and those working in the United States without authorization. http://fpc.state.gov/documents/organization/46681.pdf
