Fightdirecto -> If they know you're armed, you're safer - Bad guys won't bother you (12/25/2012 10:21:22 AM)

quote:

A newspaper in New York has received a wave of criticism from its readers after publishing the names and addresses of all of the individuals with handgun or pistol permits in its coverage area.

Hundreds of residents in New York's Westchester and Rockland counties were surprised to find their names and addresses listed on a map posted by The Journal News on Sunday. Users can click any dot on the map on the paper's on-line site to see which of their neighbors has a permit for a gun.

The map sparked more than 500 comments from readers within a day of its appearance on the website, many of them voicing outrage at the paper's decision to make the information public.

"This is CRAZY!! Why in the world would you post every licensed gun owner information?? What do you hope to accomplish by doing this? This is the type of thing you do for sex offenders not law abiding gun owners. What next? Should I hang a flag outside my house that says I own a gun? I am canceling my subscription with your paper today!!!" said commenter Curtis Maenza...

All of the names and addresses were compiled through public records. The paper also requested the information from Putnam County, which is still compiling the records for publication, according to The Journal News' website.

In a statement to ABC News, The Journal News said its readers "are understandably interested to know about guns in their neighborhoods," because of the conversation about gun control on its website after the shooting in Newtown, Conn., last week.

"We obtained the names and addresses of Westchester and Rockland residents who are licensed to own handguns through routine Freedom of Information law requests..." the statement read.

The paper declined to answer further questions about the map.

If you own a gun to protect yourself - why not let everyone know it so that they'll stay away from you? Kind of like a country (i.e. the United States) letting the world know it has atomic bombs as a deterrent to another country attacking them.

FYI: I have a .380 Colt automatic pistol and a working flintlock musket (.75 caliber) and live in the Elmwood section of Providence, Rhode Island. So stay away from my house if you know what's good for ya. ;-)

If they know you have a gun, if they are going to attack, they'll be more careful to take you out before you get to your gun.

If they know you're (or simply could be) packing and are in an area where they are planning a crime, you'll be taken out in the process to prevent you from deterring them.

If they don't know who is armed and who isn't, it protects all individuals, not just the ones that are armed. If there is a row of houses and one is going to be robbed, the one they know has an owner with a gun is less likely to be hit, making it a greater chance for the rest of the houses to be hit.

Or maybe, taking no chances, the bad guys will shoot everybody.

I guess gun owners do not subscribe to the theory of deterrence ....lol
Seems some of them were just hoping they would get a chance to "blow some sucker away"

As long as we have concealed carry I don't have a problem with publishing that information. With concealed carry I can take my weapon with me and it won't be at home for them to steal while I am out. And if I am home they know a fistful of hot iron is awaiting them.

Owner59 -> RE: If they know you're armed, you're safer - Bad guys won't bother you (12/26/2012 7:30:17 AM)

Not really......criminals aren`t as dumb as righists and know that anyone with a gun prolly has another......likely quite a few.

Concealed carry is why tourists are preyed upon in florida, a local might shoot you.

LizDeluxe -> RE: If they know you're armed, you're safer - Bad guys won't bother you (12/26/2012 7:36:12 AM)

It doesn't always work out so well for the bad guys. From today's Atlanta Journal - Constitution:

Robbery suspect shot and killed by intended victim

Maybe the robbers where you live are Mensa candidates.

LaTigresse -> RE: If they know you're armed, you're safer - Bad guys won't bother you (12/26/2012 7:51:19 AM)

Cuz, yanno, all the illegally owned guns in this country were never EVER stolen from someone that bought them legally and stuff.

Thieves just do not go steal guns.........of course not.

Yah.....anything is possible....

A local might also mistakenly shoot and kill his neighbor`s kid ....in Florida.

The newspaper probably thought they were being really crafty with their article, and were really putting gun owners in their place. Unfortunately, what they actually did was to put up a prcise road map for would-be gun thiefs as to exactly which houses they should hit while the owners aren't at home.

I think people are forgetting something...all of this was a matter of public record. Anyone thiefs included, just had to go to the Hall of Records and find this information.

"All of the names and addresses were compiled through public records."

The newspaper did nothing wrong.

Most thieves are too lazy or drugged up to hold a job...so they steal. If they are too lazy to hold a job they are also too lazy...or too stupid...to go do the search themselves. Also, I don't know about other places, but locally you have to pay a search fee to get most public information. Thieves don't pay...they take. So, here we have the newspaper handing the information to them on a silver platter for free.

Depends on your definition of "wrong." What they did wasn't illegal by any means. However, just because something is legal doesn't mean you should do it.

Doing something legal isn't necessarily not wrong.

The United States spends about as much for its conventional "Defense"(*1) arsenal as the entire rest of the planet combined. So even without nukes, nobody would want to attack the USA anyway. Statements of this kind are indicative of how ignorant the average USAian is (*2) about the rest of the world: they think there actually exist other nations out there that could possibly pose a threat to them.

-----------------------------
(*1) funny, how the USA has never been attacked on its own land, so these creatively named "Defense" forces have never been actually used for defense, only for assaulting other nations.

(*2) I am going out on a limb here and presuming you are USAian by posting this before I look at your profile to see whether I am right. (EDIT --oh, I don't have to do look at your profile, you say you live in Rhode Island, so that answers it.)

Okeanos -> RE: If they know you're armed, you're safer - Bad guys won't bother you (12/26/2012 8:52:51 AM)

I guess what bugs me most about this analogy is the historical ignorance that it exhibits: when the USA developed the bomb, they did not announce that they did, nor did they demonstrate it by blowing off the top of Mt Fuji or some uninhabited island; instead, they performed two surprise attacks against fleshy targets containing huge numbers of civilians. So, historically, a more apt analogy would be "if you one day go buy yourself a gun, why not go meet that guy you frequently get into fistfights with, and surprise him by blowing his head off?"

Ignoring the rest of the stupidity here, if a country declares war against you, you really can't call striking back a "surprise attack". Pearl Harbor was a surprise attack.

Not true, we had 5 mainland attacks during WW 2, now perhaps not very effective, but attacks none the less...

here is a list and details of all 5
