I have answered lots of question. I made a decision not to answer yours in the limited capacity you wanted me too. Thats the plain and smiple truth. And you are still acting butt hurt over it.

.

You made the decision to not answer because it would have showed your position was full of shit and you're petrified of being proven wrong.......... bottom line

And now you are a mind reader? You actually know better than I why I didnt answer something you were trying to force me to answer in a way you decided would give you the best opportunity to attack my position?

You really must think I am stupid. Sad for you, I am far from it.

In times long past, I've moderated at other boards - however your assertion that even if the moderation sucks that the terms of service allow them to suck is an odd stance to take.

Terms of Service are basically designed to cover the site legally. Their purpose is to prohibit activity which could jeopardise the site's viability by attracting legal liability. They really are a completely different order of rules compared to definitions of what constitutes acceptable behaviour.

Bringing them into this discussion is a distraction. Ultimately the site is privately owned and run and the TOS - amongst other things - limit the potential legal action a member could take should they be unceremoniously kicked off. Most normal, rational people understand that certain things have to be prohibited and people who engage in those things on a deliberate basis have to be removed.

Someone asked earlier in the thread if someone could sum up the TOS: I can. It's this: "You're here at our pleasure, don't do or involve us in anything illegal."

The rest is a question of how discourse is conducted between members on the site. And you can probably sum that up with: "Don't be a cunt."

The initial thread title posited the idea of CM in decline. On the other side, it's probably not declining - no doubt the influx of the 50 Shades curiosity set is only helping. However there's a clear sense that the community as expressed on CollarChat isn't thriving. And turning the place into a model of passive-aggressive discourse probably hasn't helped that.

Those who are blunt in their assertions are penalised. Those who are subtle are rewarded and boast about their ability to skate around the edge of moderation. Newbies are frequently dog-piled by inhospitable regulars and the phrase "Go and search for it" has become an expression of self-evaluated superiority.

People love drama, stories, narrative. It's those very aspects of passion - which the current regime seems determined to stamp out - that fire the imagination of the newbies. They're curious and looking for excitement and are received with a yawn by a bunch of bored women in spandex eating cucumber sandwiches. This jaded sense of ennui permeates these forums in a stultifying miasmic haze of "been there, done that".

Moderation is a necessary evil and your first amendment rights do not extend into places such as this - yet I fail to see how straitjacketing the dialogue has had a positive impact. If you don't want a flame-fest, don't discuss politics, abortion or religion. People are going to bicker and form alliances. It's inevitable. Intervention should be saved for genuine TOS violations, not arbitration between members.

Moderation deals with four classes of user. Regulars, newbies, fly-by-nighters and trolls or griefers. Moderation standards need to deal with those four classes in different ways. Regulars beating up on a troll is one thing, regulars beating up on a poor newbie is quite another. Regulars bickering savagely amongst themselves is yet another. (Regulars beating up on findommes is a community service and should be encouraged, although I suspect CM profits too much from them to want to encourage this).

Yes, this is what happens when you fuck up and I have to lecture you all. Let that be a lesson to you.

Yes, but you're supposed to read the rest of my diatribe and reflect upon the rare wisdom contained within. Must I explain everything?

Wow. Just-- wow. This is impressive debate, well-reasoned (for the most part) on all sides. I stepped away from the site for two days, and the thread doubled in length.

Wow.

Cool.

From where I sit, still fairly new, I think the mods are extremely tolerant and reluctant to use the banhammer. Good for them. Good for us.

I would like to step on this, though:

quote:

I said this on another thread, but it's worth repeating: this "accept the status quo or leave argument" is very much like telling Rosa Parks to just get off the bus.

Nonsense. Rosa was paying for the bus as much as anyone: it was a public bus, given a monopoly by the government of which she was a citizen and a taxpayer-- she had as much right as any other citizen/taxpayer to sit anywhere on the bus she owned/licensed.

This site is not public. It is owned solely and completely by its owners. It is utterly private. Like, say, my car.

If Rosa Parks sat down in my car (which she can't, unfortunately, 'cause she's dead), I would have every right to kick her out, or have her arrested. In fact, I could probably shoot her as a carjacker.

It gets a liiiiiittle more complicated when I start running a taxi service, and offer to take her fare, but make her sit in the back, while I allow white customers to sit in front. Especially if I have to buy a city medallion and get licensed as a hack. BUT-- no such problem on this site, still, so the analogy still drops: there is no public subsidy for CM. No licensing. So no inherent rights of users.

Like it or lump it.

I did agree with you. I guess that indicates to you that I did not read it all the way through? Hmmmm... nope... I did.

lol.. lets not start that argument. Suffice it to say I am friends with many professional dommes. I see nothing wrong with the financial aspect. I do see something wrong with the new crop coming in. But thats for another thread.

Good point. Better analogy. This is a bus shelter which someone's erected privately and allowed people to congregate in. Sometimes people get kicked out. Some people talk louder than others and get kicked out. Some people seem to be able to talk as loud as they like without being kicked out. Occasionally someone new drops into the bus shelter and get hissed at by other people in the bus shelter. Those who survive the hissing become regulars and participate in future hissing fits.

Sometimes someone drops in and takes a dump on the floor. This causes further hissing and they're usually kicked out. Occasionally a regular self-immolates and is the subject of retroactive hissing. Occasionally regulars hiss at each other.

There's fewer people in the bus shelter these days. Everyone's afraid of the snakes.

I see zero TOS violations in this thread.
Noone is calling anyone names.
Noone is mentioning illegal activities except to say they're verboten.
Noone is attacking anyone.
Noone is attacking anyone's kink.
Where would there be a place for them to step in?

So why the fuck can't we do that more often? ETA: Is this thread any less for the absence of those?

Pam

Because when you're beating up on the moderators, you know for sure they're watching.

The rest of the time... meh... not so much. Apparently they "can't read everything".

TAFKAA, that works better. And I don't see a problem with it: it's all voluntary association, at no cost to the users. The only way the owners/mods are punished is by lesser user base. It's a self-solving system. It works very well.
