~FR~

I can only state why I cut down on my posting and became a lurker. Had nothing to do with moderation, other than the lack of it at the time. Had to do with writing long, thoughtful posts, only to have some jackass come along and turn the entire discussion into flames, off topic bullshit, and anything else but the actual topic.

I can understanding being upset if I quoted something that was a violation, and my long thoughtful post was deleted because of it. I would be upset at the jackasses that are posting against the rules.

Guess the answer is in the middle somewhere, and not the extreme that many are pushing.

The "Decline of CollarMe" thread is at 45 pages and growing. The "CollarMe Appreciation" Thread made it to a third page before dropping off the radar. Just sayin'.

I am no longer following the more hotly debated (and arguably more interesting) discussions these days. If I see one I wish to comment on I will do so but I drop my comment and go on my way. I don't always check back to respond to anyone who responded to me. I might carry on a back and forth conversation in a more benign thread. While I realize that the vast majority of threads here are never locked lately I seem to have a knack for posting in those that have been so. It's very frustrating.

Wouldn't it be a hoot if this thread got locked?

there have been comments made regarding mod's and whether we should know whom they are, or not. so just some musings;

on another site i was a member of the mod's posted all the time under their normal nics which were a different colour to everyone else's. in theory it works. in reality it doesn't. the problem we had was never knowing when they were posting in mod mode, or in member mode. it caused alot of contention with standard members because you never knew if you were answering a mod, or a member. they were not seen to be treated under the same rules as other members. more than a few members suggested that the mod's should be made to state whether they were posting as mod, or member. that didn't go down well at all. that site used to be very busy, it's now like a graveyard from what i'm led to understand. the other problem with everyone knowing who the mod's were is that everyone knew who were friends with them too. more went on besides....alot more.

so, if the mod's here are supposed to be annon, then annon they should stay....to EVERYONE.

I can't count how many times I've taken the time to write a fairly long, well thought out post, only to hit okay and find out that the thread has been locked or just plain disappeared. That's bullshit.

This.

On that note, you have CMail.

This seems to me to be better addressed by slapping those posters with [Awaiting Approval] than by locking down and pruning every thread that can be pruned and pulling all the other threads? That adds a cost to being a jackass, and doesn't add a cost to writing long, thoughtful posts, unlike the current approach.

Been there, done that, not doing it again.

Agreed.

Your opinion on using [Awaiting Approval] more often, thread locks/pulls less often, and reply pulling only when strictly needed?

That's what I'm advocating as a middle ground.

IWYW,

I tend to agree we need a middle of the road path on moderation.

And to be honest, I am still unsure as to what the who problem was to begin with. One individual seems to feel that they were singled out for mod response when others have done similar things and got a pass.

Personally I think that may be the mod, I have seen VAA nail me and many others for the same thing, and no one got a pass.

Question...
If I quote say Pam (just an example) and her original post violates the TOS, which means mine does as well because I quoted her.
Instead of pulling the entire post, can the Mods simply edit out the quoted part?
I have seen them edit posts in the Welcome board, removing emails and such.

Too much work, and often leaves the post in an unintelligible state.

They're generally happy to send you the pulled post so you can edit and repost it, though, unless the thread was locked/pulled.

And why bother pulling it unless it's actually illegal...?

(Aswad, I will go to my mail tonight when I am at home. I hate trying to thoughtfully answer email here at work where I get interrupted constantly)

That's been my point for 46 pages.

As far as being 'mean' to people. It's a site full of fucking Sadists for fucks sake.
this isn't Cafemom.com .

No rush. It's probably at least a month old, so it can wait till it's convenient.

Just because I'm fine with minor surgery without anaesthesia on someone that consents, doesn't mean talking to me has to resemble that experience.

It just so happens that I am in need of some minor surgery. How familiar are you with surgical screws?

The only thing I know about surgical screws is that they're quite expensive. The one reconnecting my bicep tendon to my right shoulder went for $350, installation extra.

Because some of us (not all, obviously) don't want to have to sift through pages of bullshit to get to the meaty stuff. And if attacking someone personally is in violation of TOS, then posts that do so are pulled. Now obviously everyone's bullshit meter is different, and one of the mods' jobs is to maintain an enjoyable message board for the majority. So finding that balance is the tricky part.

For me, anyway, the more personal attack posts and silly, off topic bantering posts there are in a thread, the less likely I am to bother with it. I know I'm not alone in that. I understand a lot of people do like that stuff and are less likely to post if it's removed. So there's that balance thing again.

this isn't Cafemom.com .

But using this logic means I could walk into a BDSM club and start smacking people around, saying "Well I'm a sadist - it's a club full of fucking sadists for fucks sake." Do you think that would fly? Why should that fly here?

I can't speak for all the masochists here, but I only get my maso-groove on from one man and he's not on these boards.

You left off the "This isn't cafemom.com"

Leaving that off totally changes the tenor and meaning of the post does it not?
This is a site with Sadists, masochists and every kind of kinky adult oriented person you can imagine.

What it is NOT is a site where people freak out, castigate someone and start a soccermom flame war when someone mentions spanking misbehaving UM's.

We have adults who live on the fringes. Children are not allowed and weak hearts are not recommended. That said, why has it become a place where words that are allowed even in church cannot be uttered?

Not earth shattering but i would like the [Awaiting Approval] sent to the poster and NOT posted in the thread. I often use the " Show threads I've contributed to" option and if someone is [Awaiting Approval] is in the thread posted it always shows up as a new post has been added. If I've said that right. But it wastes time opening the thread only to see no new posts have been added.

A small irritation but easily remedied.

Butch

Some time ago I suggested a remedy to all the posts in this thread. What we need is a separate forum with NO moderation except what is illegal under the law of the sites home. When a complaint of violation of standard TOS is made temporarily link to the NON moderated forum at least until the mod has time to read through the thread and make appropriate decisions.

Threads could also be started in the NON moderated forums if people should chose to participate.

Seems to me this would solve all problems stated in this thread AND make for some interesting debates for those with thick skin. Those that do not like that type of rhetoric can chose to stay in the standard moderate rooms.

Butch
