It appears that what goes around truly does comes around:

After newspaper's gun-permit map, blogger posts journalists' addresses

New York (CNN) -- A blogger has posted the home addresses of staffers from a newspaper after the paper published an online, interactive map showing names and addresses of all handgun permit-holders in New York's Westchester and Rockland counties.

Christopher Fountain, who is also a gun owner, spoke to CNN's "Starting Point with Soledad O'Brien" on Thursday to explain his reasoning behind the posting. "I felt they were using this to harass gun owners," Fountain said of the newspaper's staff. "So I harassed them back."

I love it. Maybe these news outlets will think twice from now on. The Internet has changed the world forever.

Juvenile? Sure was, on both parties.

But, well-played. I wonder if he posted an interactive map...

When the Memphis Commercial Appeal posted a gun database on their website a few years ago, some folks went through the state records and found out that the names of CA personnel, friends, and family had been 'left out' of the news version. Any post bringing that up in the comments section was rapidly deleted.

The people's 'right to know' seems somewhat limited in today's media.

If you care to justify the double standard here I am willing to listen.

mnottertail -> RE: Turnabout is fair play (12/28/2012 7:19:53 AM)

Its not a double standard, in my mind what the journalist did was criminal.

Public records is public records, we have laws about that.

I see a safety risk. No one will attack a home owner they know has a weapon. The same cannot be said about the journalist.

Maybe not when he is home but I can definitely see it as greatly increasing the burglary risk when he is away.

The excuse of "We're just publishing public records" works both ways. Unfortunately, the journalists were short sighted.

It seems that the anti-gun crowd sees gun owners as a bunch of non bathing, knuckle dragging bubbas who have to be periodically reminded to breathe.
The reality is that some of us have 150+ IQ scores, advanced degrees and own companies.
Piss those people off and it can bite you on the ass.

The journalist should have thought about that before posting that map of gun-owners. Personal responsibility, nes pas?

you assume I was making a double standard.IM not..Both are juvenile,
Dont put words in my mouth ...

Interesting we now have a debate over Free Press, lst Amendment vs. Gun Ownership 2nd Amendment...and all these NRA stuff about how the 2nd protects the lst...[sm=cheering.gif]

mnottertail -> RE: Turnabout is fair play (12/28/2012 7:36:23 AM)

n'est ce pas.  n'est pas means: nothing is impossible, you want: is that not so?

Yet no one here, and I mean no one, with the possible exception of the convicts, would less than clap hands in joy if a map of child molesters in your area was available.

So, the points up till then are pretty fuckin puerile.

they were short sighted.. and put themselves into the position they find themselves in currently.

I dont think either side really thought out their actions. Someone could seriously get hurt as a result of their tit for tat games.

Lucylastic -> RE: Turnabout is fair play (12/28/2012 7:58:08 AM)

yep Tazzy... and then neither side will take responsibility, petty retaliation has a way of snowballing

It probably was a safety risk. Perhaps that was the blogger's intent. The point of the the thread is that freedom of information is a two way street. Look carefully both ways before you cross that street. People looking for guns will target homes that are unoccupied that they know contain weapons. That's not high level math.

Except in this situation we'll be able to assign responsibility whether it is acknowledged or not.

If you dont want to see people get hurt, dont start fights. It's really simple.

I put a majority of the responsibility on whomever decided to post the map of gun owners. (note, I said a majority)

That person's actions led directly to everything that follows.
If they don't publish the gun owners map, nothing else happens that has been described here. Irresponsible actions have consequenses.

If someone walks up to me and punches me in the face out of the blue, they really have noone to blame but themselves if they end up on the floor with a dislocated kneecap.

Only if their intent is to score weapons. If not, then those houses will be avoided and the neighbors will be the target.

Even with that, you cant put the blame on anyone for robbing them, even the gun owners. That blame rests solely upon the person doing the robbing, right?
