On a public playground in Milford, Delaware.

English:

quote:

Parental of guardian supervision is required for the use of this playground equipment. Play at your own risk

Spanish (translated into English):

quote:

You have to have a permit to play here or you will be arrested.

Photos to prove it wasn't Photoshopped

I find this hard to believe. And I wonder if the literal translation is not how it should truly be read.

You know, Americans will say things like "Well that's a horse of a different color." Which, if translated literally, makes no sense in the context of any conversation in which it's used - unless talking about rainbow colored horses, of course.

So...I just wonder...if "parental supervision" equates to "permit" somehow and if perhaps there's a colloquialism around the "at your own risk" that Google translator wouldn't pick up, you know?

'Horse of a different color' is an idiom. 'Must have a permit to play on this field' , and 'Violators are subject to police action' aren't idioms.

'Parental supervision' would be 'Superviso de los padres'.

It's been a long time since I lived in miami and my Spanish is really crappy as a result (it was never very good) but the sign is pretty much as powergamz says it is.

I wish I found the sign harder to believe than I do. But no. Sadly.

Discrimination is alive and well in America. Did anyone really think otherwise?

I would hope it was a translation error but you never know.

That's scary. Before I saw the news article, I was about to bet my next paycheck on this being a hoax. Not only is it morally wrong to put up those signs, but it violates pretty much every anti-discrimination law ever written. Plus, in my legal opinion, it is blatantly unconstitutional.

But so overt? On (presumably) public property? That's something you don't see every day in America.

Yeah, I went to Snopes after I posted, sure that I would see that it was a hoax. But Snopes says it's true, and if Snopes says it's true....

That's no error.

It would be a field day in court if some Hispanic were actually arrested. I'd like to see it happen for just that reason.
