There is a solid ethical base in keeping the good deeds we do private.  In Jewish tradition, we are taught that all "tzedakah" (charity) is good -- but among the  highest level of good deeds is giving "where the donor doesn't know to whom he gives and the recipient doesn't know from whom he receives".

While all of you are good people, and you do good deeds of which you are justly proud, I have to vote with IronBear and RavenMuse here.

E.

Yeah, I agree too. I only told those two of mine in a evidently futile attempt to get some of CM's lovely ladies to "ooh" and "ahh" over me, and maybe send me some naughty pics [8|].

I don't brag, even to get ooohs and aaahs. If you seek admiration, it's not a random act...it's only self serving.
IMHO

Well, seeing as how they happened a while back, and I never said anything till now, I was on the side of the angels.

One year I put a christmas hamper together, drove around in the early hours of the morning till I found just the right house. I don't know why I picked it but it seemed the perfect one at the moment. I left it on their doorstep with a note saying "Merry Christmas". It was an anonymous gesture.

Years later, I was talking with a group of people and everyone was sharing feel good stories. One person there shared a story about something that happened to a family living in their street one Christmas. The family  had been through all kinds of trouble, job losses, financial problems, just plain sad things had been happening, they were not looking forward to christmas and felt pretty disgruntled about life in general, they awoke to find this huge Christmas Hamper on their door step...it just changed their whole perspective about life and since then every Christmas they do the same thing.

Weird, I really think I believe that thing about the 10 degrees of separation, for that story to come back to me years later was kinda incredible.

never said anything til now?  Sooooo!
Somethings are better left unsaid, especially good deeds.  If you want a pat on the back..I think your doing fine...keep patting.
I find intrinsic rewards from good deeds......personally and I need no pats.

LaTigresse -> RE: Random Acts of Kindness.....What do you do??? (6/19/2006 3:53:31 PM)

*** using fast reply because I am lazy***

I believe in kind acts all the time, any chance I can. My favourites are the ones that I can do incognito with the least amount of fanfare. I don't like that sort of attention. "look at me, how cool am I, see what I did" BLECK!!
That being said I am not gonna tell anyone any of them. Just encourage everyone to keep up the good work. Most of us are pretty damned fortunate to have what we have. I know I am. 30 years ago I would have never imagined, hell, even 20, to be where I am now.

Sounds pretty self-serving to me.

slavejali -> RE: Random Acts of Kindness.....What do you do??? (6/19/2006 4:10:10 PM)

My opinion is this, people are so eager to share negativity...I think when there is a chance to share some feel good stories its wonderful. I dont think expression in itself is looking for a "pat on the back" its always in a persons motivation.

I think saying "I do them but am not telling you what I do" just amounts to saying the same thing as if you told a story, so why not just say it and share the goodness, free and clear of guilt or thinking you're putting yourself in some hall of fame, we arent going to receive any rewards or prizes for posting here, this forum is kinda anonymous in a way  [:)]

and if we all just believed
that " what you do ... comes back to you "
xxx's 3 .. the bad and the good
it might be a better world [;)]

Behaving as if karma were real might indeed make our world better, gypsysoul, but it's hard to buy into sometimes. Hitler killed millions, but only died once. Good thought, though.

It's the point of the thread.

That said, everything we do is, in part, self serving.  EVERYTHING.  We do good things partly because of how it makes US feel.  It makes us feel good to do something for someone else regardless of how hard it was, how much sacrifice it required, how much it hurt us to do it.  That is not to say that everything we do is done for public recognition, for horn blowing, or for anyone to know but our higher power and ourselves.  If it didn't make us feel good to help others, we wouldn't do it.

There are things I do for others that I don't know who I helped and they don't know who helped them, and those things leave me with a smile.  But the people that I help while I'm looking them in the eyes, while I'm assisting them in making their lives better, those are the ones that I cherish the most.  Not because they know who helped them, but because I was able to be a part of them helping themselves.

LaTigresse -> RE: Random Acts of Kindness.....What do you do??? (6/19/2006 4:24:14 PM)

I will share random acts of kindness given to me because I feel more comfortable with that.

When I was a child growing up, we were super poor. My grandmother gave us an old piano. The neighbour lady who was rather well off financially gave a few kids in town piano lessons. She knew that we had gotten the piano and that I wanted to learn to play it but that my parents did not have the money to pay her. She volunteered to give me lessons for free. I took them for years even though I sucked. I just wanted so badly to make her effort worthwhile.

When I was a newly single mother living in a shithole house trying to raise two small children and not getting any help at all from their father an elderly woman that barely knew me went and bought ALOT of groceries and brought them to my house.

About the same time a man that I had boarded a horse with when I had the money to have a horse, bought me a truck to replace the car I had that was dying. He even put new tires on it before bringing over.

The same gentleman brought Christmas presents for my kids to my house on Christmas Eve.

A woman I went to work for, shortly thereafter, used to send food home with me all the time.

My neighbour quite often sneaks over plows the deep snow out of our lane during the winter because he knows we work long hours.

Just a few..........

He died once...true! However,  unlevel,  he has become the epitomy of evil and dies every day...at the holocaust museum, the discovery channel, the history channel and in text books across the world.
That's a weak argument....sorry, but it is....like most of yours...giggles

bandit25 -> RE: Random Acts of Kindness.....What do you do??? (6/19/2006 4:49:52 PM)

What's all the giggling about?  I, for one, enjoy Level's posts.  And what's wrong with sharing something nice you did for someone?  It's not like anyone here is asking for money.  Or even a medal.  Who knows?  A story here may inspire someone to do something nice for someone else.

AngelicPuzzle -> RE: Random Acts of Kindness.....What do you do??? (6/19/2006 4:53:30 PM)

LMAO no I live in Maine and the toll was only .60 cents big money huh????  - it was one of those weird little inspirations as I was getting on and what the hell - it was a little gesture but greatly lifted my spirits that day :) :) :)

Level -> RE: Random Acts of Kindness.....What do you do??? (6/19/2006 4:53:36 PM)

*hugs Katy and bandit*....... good ladies, both of you.
