I don't know about you guys but I could swear there was the scent of puppy breath wafting outa my pc!  <G>  Those were some beautiful babies.
I've bred 13 litters of imported German Shepherds, 2 Doberman litters and 1 litter of Rottweilers over the last 33 years.  There is nothing like the antics of those little cuties to make you forget what troubles you.  :)
Thanks so much for this thread!

If you have an unregistered Pitbull type dog in the UK, the police can seize and destroy it for no other reason than it looks like a Pitbulll. Because Staffordshire Bull Terriers became enormously popular in the UK a few years ago, they became a victim of their own success. Supply soon outweighed demand and consequently thousands of these lovely gentle dogs have ended up in the wrong hands. They have been used as fighting and baiting dogs and they are bred with other unregistered staffies. Charities are bursting over with registered Staffies needing new homes and thousands of unregistered staffies are now being destroyed.
Its bloody tragic.

These dogs often end up in the wrong hands but any dog that ends up in the wrong hands can be dangerous to other dogs/animals and the public.
My neighbours 3 year old daughter had half her face ripped off by a Yorkshire terrier as she climbed into her Grandmothers car.
My lurcher had his stomach opened by an German Shepherd. That doesn't mean that all Yorkshire terriers and German Shepherds are dangerous.

While there is no doubt that pit bulls have been involved in numerous animal/human attacks, one has to wonder how were those individual dogs raised/treated through out their lives.  We cannot discriminate against a breed due to the problems associated with some dogs.  The number of pit bulls and pit mixes is unbelievably high compared to the those instances where dogs cause problems.

Pit bulls have been known as great family dogs for decades.  It is only since the 70's, when the breed became popular and dog fighting escalated that the dog aggression w/ humans began.  The old time pit men would euthanize any dog that showed aggression towards humans. So where does the blame lie?  The owners.  The greed factor in what your dog can make you, money wise, if he wins the fight.  The ways and means people accept to make dogs viscious and untrustworthy.

Personally, I think anyone who owns pits should be required to achieve a CGC certificate (temperament test), attend at least basic obedience classes, and have the dog spayed or neutered unless they are willing to post a high dollar bond proving responsibility.  This would surely cut down on breeding pits & owning pits.  For those who follow the law anyway.

The plight of the APBT is pathetic in this country as well as in others. (see post from Maria B).  Pit bulls in general are fantastic family dogs, great deterrants of those with less than good intentions, and wonderful 'best friends".  At this moment I'm currently waiting to add a new pit pup to my crew of 5 dogs/5 cats/1 mule.  This will be the third pit I've owned and I can't think of a better choice for my next 'buddy'.

( ps........ Just as an fyi, I've been training dogs professionally since 1977, was a Chief Temperament Tester for ATTS, owned and operated a boarding/training facility for over 20 years, taught tracking/obedience/protection classes, competitor in AKC & Schutzhund trials,  etc ........  I do have a bit of knowledge on this subject :)

We have owned and bred pits for as long as 13 years. Our pits sold for a higher then normal, waaaay higher than normal price. I would and have refused to sell to anyone I thought might use them for something other than being a loving companion. He'll my min pin is more aggressive than my fat pig (pit) I have now. All my pit does is eat sleep and play. At one point we had a waiting list for our pups to arrive. And each person was screened accordingly.

ServosCor -> RE: D Pearls got me thinking about pit puppies... (1/10/2013 9:45:16 AM)

TND I know what you are saying.  Ditto here w/ our litters.  I didn't care if someone offered me twice what I was asking, if I didnt think they were the right match, they didnt get a pup.  No way. No how.

I'm waiting for a bitch to whelp the end of the month to see if there is a special boy in it for me :))  If it happens, I'll send you a pic!

(we pit lovers just love to brag about our kids )

TNDommeK -> RE: D Pearls got me thinking about pit puppies... (1/10/2013 9:52:51 AM)

Yes, we do! Lol

We would always take Pinky ( that's actually her name, we just call her pig) to the dog park, for years. Never had a problem. Well, about a year ago this lady starts showing up with her dog. I think it was a husky, not quite sure. Anyhoo..this dog was always picking on every dog there. Like to the point where people would say things to her about it. I would break the rules and take pinky over to the little dog section, they loved her over there. Well one day a bunch of us were on the big dog side and the woman comes and like always, her dog starts becoming aggressive....with pinky! Long story short her dog ended up fanging my dogs eye. Had to go to the vet, she lost the eye. I was pissed. Never saw the woman again after that. But that's ok, cause now when I take pics of pinky only one eye lights up and she
Looks like the terminator.

I hate that it happened, but now maybe the woman realizes her dog is a fuming nuisance. But then again probably not. She probably thinks " vicious pitbull!"

Hillwilliam -> RE: D Pearls got me thinking about pit puppies... (1/10/2013 10:02:38 AM)

The only time a pitt ever hurt me in the least is bruises on my leg from that tail. It's like a bullwhip when it gets going.

TNDommeK -> RE: D Pearls got me thinking about pit puppies... (1/10/2013 10:04:23 AM)

Omg I know, pinky's tail is a weapon of mass destruction. And poor coco gets beat to sleep with it all the time, lol.
But it's because they are soooooo happy!

OsideGirl -> RE: D Pearls got me thinking about pit puppies... (1/10/2013 10:09:25 AM)

The only time that I've ever been bitten by a dog....was an Irish Setter.

Pretty much every Pitty that I know is just a big ole goober.

In San Diego, the humane society is just overloaded with Pits because the gangbangers thought they were cool...and then dumped the product of their unneutered dogs on the streets.

I have nothing against Pits, but we made a conscious choice not to get one when we adopted our dogs. Simply because it was much easier to get insurance. (Well, that and I love Aussie Dogs)

ServosCor -> RE: D Pearls got me thinking about pit puppies... (1/10/2013 10:26:54 AM)

OMG how well I remember the day Caine whipped me across the eyeballs w/ his tail.  God I thought I would be blinded for sure LOL.   They are just the BEST dogs for an all 'round family dog.  Caine had never been around kids till he was about 6.  I watched him like a hawk w/ my first grandson.  What a "nannyboy" he was!  He loved my grandson like he'd been raised from a pup w/ the boy.  Temperament of gold, that boy.  :)   ~~good memories.  I miss him~

Oside:  Aus. Shepherds or Cattle dogs? or both?  :)  I had a ACD that I showed all over the SE US in Schutzhund.  He was awesome.  Soooooooo smart!

And after that google "unwanted pets at shelters." Stop breeding when there are thousands dying daily in shelters. Breeding any animal leads to death of others.

ServosCor -> RE: D Pearls got me thinking about pit puppies... (1/10/2013 11:03:08 AM)

Aynne...  We are both on the side of the animals.  The problem, imho, is not the conscientious breeders who are not only concerned with the homes the pups go to, they are willing to buy back puppies/adults when the original owners lives change.   The problem comes in those breeding for the almighty dollar with no thought to what happens to a pup after it leaves their hands.  Every single conscientious breeder I know has cut way back or stopped breeding due to the economy and folks giving up their dogs.  That said, there are still people like myself, who cannot bring an adult rescue into their situation.  Also, I "choose" to buy a purebred to enhanse my chances of success in the sport I compete in.  Can a non pedigreed dog do as well?  Sure; and I proved it with the cattle dog I mentioned to Oside.
I do not need to google 'unwanted pets".  My ex husband became the shelter director in our county years ago.  He held the posiition for 2.5 yrs.  He finally quit because he couldn't deal with having to kill 50+ animals DAILY.  It's sickening. I no longer breed. But, I will buy a purebred for my competition dog.  I do have 7 rescues ...oops 8 countin' the mule previously headed to slaughter.... on my property today.  9 if you want to count the stray cat I'm feeding and trying to catch to neuter him.  I do my part. So do most people I know.

We had an old school Queensland Heeler. He looked like a Australian Shepherd with shorter hair. He was an amazing dog. And even though he was Master's dog, he immediately became my velcro dog.

We adopted Raider, he's obviously a mix and it's hard to tell if he's ACD or Shepherd because of that.

This is him the day after we brought him home at 13 weeks.

Awe cute pup. Servos is right, I have absolutely told a buyer if they cannot take care of the of to let me buy it back. I haven't had any issues with that so far. A number of the ppl I sold to are friends with me on fb so I actually get to see my grand dogs grow up, lol.
