NV, there was a couple of pages of spiders posted yesterday, so you going there, no bueno!
Wanna see what happened the last time somebody said not to post spider pics? http://www.collarchat.com/fb.asp?m=3604999&key=spiders

I firmly believe in that the right to swing your arm stops when you hit someone else's nose. In the case of a story, the "swing" is a slow, telegraphed arc that isn't aimed at anyone at all - in order to get "hit" you have to read the story. In the case of a pic, the swing is a sucker punch launched from a dark room - there's no chance to get out of the way.

No. This is the Internet. It's like you chose to turn on computer. No one was physically injured.

So you can guarantee that that pic won't cause a cardiac arrest in an arachnophobic with heart disease?

Absolutely not. The analogy is true. Shoving that post in my face is comparable to feeding a diabetic a bag of sugar, where me preparing myself for the movie spiders is comparable to the diabetic giving themselves a maintenance insulin shot. It's called an analogy for a reason.

If you're truly a diabetic, you should know damn well you shouldn't have that bag of sugar.

If you have a true, irrational paranoia, your should know damn well you shouldn't go to a movie with giant hairy spiders.

You're twisting the analogy. If someone shoves a pic of a spider in my face, this is comparable to me being force-fed the sugar - I'm not ingesting it willingly.

If I choose to try to deal with my phobia, and see a movie after mentally preparing myself for it, that's my choice.

She doesn't need to guarantee a thing. It's allowed on this site to post pictures of spiders. The person with the spider phobia needs to shelter themselves, the onus of responsibility is on them, not on the world. Just like if someone is diabetic the onus is on them to follow dietary requirements. You can't stop a diabetic from stopping at the local fudge shop and consuming a pound. Should the fudge shop close up?

Can you guarantee that "preparing yourself" will work and you won't croak while watching Harry Potter? I have 0 sympathy for your incident.

On a related note, I have 0 sympathy for diabetics who eat whole bags of sugar, think that a shot of insulin will fix everything, and end up losing a leg.

I'm frankly shocked that it took you this long to get offended on the Internet.

Jesus. You're not listening. She said no one was physically injured, and attempted to use that as a rationale for her side of the debate. She cannot guarantee that that result will be true in every situation. Therefore it cannot be used to justify her argument. That is my point.

The analogy is that someone is popping that pic on others unawares, and THAT analogy is similar to force-feeding the diabetic the bag of sugar. Of course they're not ingesting it of their own choice - in that case the responsibility IS theirs.

The Internet is different from reality, but certain rules of good behavior do apply, or should. Once again, deliberately scaring someone with such a pic is beyong the bounds of good behavior. Would you run around a room shoving a spider in the faces of random strangers? What would you do if one dropped over with a heart attack? Would you say it's their fault?

Lynnxz -> RE: Lets be honest have you ever reported anyone (1/14/2013 5:30:55 PM)

LadyPact -> RE: Lets be honest have you ever reported anyone (1/14/2013 5:32:26 PM)

Dude, when you see a commercial that advertises a spider related program that is being broadcast by Animal Planet, do you write the FCC to protest when the spider flashes across the screen? Do you understand why they don't have to pull the ad even if you do contact the FCC? It's because the content is acceptable for broadcast. Rather than rapists and diabetics, there's an analogy that you can use that is closer to reality.

No, I cannot guarantee that if I CHOOSE to watch said movie I won't die from a adrenaline induced coronary. But that is my choice to watch the movie - in the case of the surprise spider pic all choice has been taken from me. I can choose to not come on the site, which allows an elite minority to control site access, or I can block the user so I cannot see the pic - which I did.

But what about others who get taken by surprise by such pics? Again, my point is that choosing to leave such a pic up when you are aware of the danger it may cause is an immoral and unethical choice.

My next question is why are all of you so hostile about this? Did I touch a nerve somewhere?

Life doesn't work like that.

Yes. If someone is in such tenuous shape that they absolutely cannot take the chance happening of another person running around flaunting spiders everywhere then IT IS THEIR FAULT FOR LEAVING THEIR HOME AND POSSIBLY ENCOUNTERING A SPIDER. This phobic person cannot legally or morally ask every person in the world to act in a manner that will be suitable for their emotional comfort or physical safety. Like it or not, people have the right to run around with spiders, it is not illegal. So if you have such a debilitating problem in that you cannot even hazard a chance encounter with a picture, or live animal, then you need to shelter yourself away from these chance encounters. It is not the responsibility of the entire world to conform to what would suit you better. Even if it would kill you, the world is not at this point legally bound to protect you against encountering a spider and possibly dying.

If that means the affected person cannot turn on the TV or open the computer then I guess they need not to do that. Every other person in the world is guaranteed the right to run around with spiders. If you die from exposing yourself to the possibility of spiders its your own fault.

You are assuming that people are posting spider pictures to scare others, maybe they just like them, or think they are cool. You have no idea why these pictures are posted and you don't need to know, it's the right of the person posting to put it up. End of story. If you can't take the heat, get out of the fire. Don't turn on the computer. That's on the person who might die, not on the millions of others who use this site.

Who isn't listening? You are so immersed in defending your position of wanting to be protected that you can't see the logic in the fact that you are trying to argue a legal basic rights concept with an emotional defense. The illogical drama and horrible analogies you are bringing up have no base in the personal rights of freedom that we have in this country and the fact that this site does NOT prohibit pictures of spiders.

Lynnxz -> RE: Lets be honest have you ever reported anyone (1/14/2013 5:44:26 PM)

Someone needs to send this man to 4chan.

You have every right to be offended. However, it's all on you. It's no one else's fault, and no one is to "blame" for posting a picture of something that is probably under your chair as I type.

I wouldn't say you've touched a nerve. I would say that you have provided an excellent example of what some of the members of the site have been talking about when it comes to over-zealous or even fraudulent reporting practices.

Life doesn't work like that.

Of course it doesn't. I do quite a lot of hiking and camping, and running across the territory of wolf spiders in the forest is a risk I take - willingly. When I see them my heart jumps into my throat, my kness get all weak, my respirations shoot up, and I do one of two things: I either clear out or I SMASHSMASHSMASH.

I don't want to microcontrol anyone - but again, the analogy holds true - if someone shoves a spider into the faces of random people, they should be made to put it away. In this case the analogy should be that they move it to a secondary or tertiary picture - if I choose to view all their pics then I shouldn't complain if I find the spider.

So you chose to go hiking and shove your face into spiders? You could have killed yourself with your weak heart. Someone should 10-13 you to a behavioral health facility for suicidal tendencies, since everyone is to be held responsible and everything.

Ok, so the person with the phobia, as illogical as the phobia may be, should then be the one who has to restrict their own privileges so as not to accidentally view a trigger picture? The first time is one thing - but after you make the person aware of what their actions may cause, then it seems to be a moral and ethical question, as well as a admin question. If there was a whole roomful of people socializing, and getting along peaceably for the most part, and one person walked in and started popping a spider, snake, etc. on people unawares, how long would it take before that person was ejected? Who would you blame for the situation? The phobic or the person causing the trigger event?

You are a grown ass man. You have a duty to yourself to do what you can to avoid triggers. Others have no obligation whatsoever to you. No matter how hard you wish to thrust it upon them. As to the original picture, that person had every right to have that picture up. And after you told them of your phobia they still had that right. You're upset because the person didn't remove the picture like you wished. You can be mad and you can go sit in the corner and cry in your beer. They don't have to move to your directives.

You have the phobia. It's your job to manage it. Others may or may not accommodate you. As they please.

This ^^^^^^ times a gazillion!
