Never heard that one.

The closest thing to that is "never judge a book by its cover."

MissBlueangel -> RE: Old Adages (1/12/2013 3:30:29 AM)

I think it may be " a Scottish Granny" one.....means the same tho

jlf1961 -> RE: Old Adages (1/12/2013 3:42:37 AM)

I heard this one from a friend of mine from Glasgow.

Never get a red headed lass from the highlands angry.

Considering I know a few red heads that are not from Scotland or Ireland who have fiery tempers, I fail to see how one from the highlands could be worse.

My dad always used to tell me as a teenager -
"If you aren't in bed by 10pm, it's time to come home son".

Took me a while to work that one out! [:D]

Uh that kind of sounds like if you aint getting laid by 10, then you should go home cause it aint happening.

Of course, being raised Catholic, I heard this from my mom, "If you are not home by ten, you are up to no good."

Needless to say, I spent a lot of time in the confessional.

Smile and the world smiles with you, cry and you wet your face

The universe gives you what you need, not what you want. That's why you get so many opportunities to learn patience.

Makes about as much sense as "They get along like oil and water."

Well, saying "They get along like oil and water." (or the actual saying "Those two are like oil and water") means that they don't get along because oil and water don't mix.

Good things come to those who wait.

So keep waiting and let me know how that works out for you.

My mom used to tell us kids that.

When I got older I told her that I felt she was leading us down the wrong path.

My favorite for a long time: it's better to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

This is going to sound crazy but....

" you ain't holdin your mouth right". Like if you were trying to do something and it wasn't working, someone would say that.
Now I know being on THIS forum, y'all's minds just went flyin in the gutter!

I had a slave that felt that way once when she first met me. Somehow that approach didn't work out so well for her.

Ah. Yes. Admittedly, this works out much better in vanilla life, from whence I hail.

jlf1961 -> RE: Old Adages (1/12/2013 5:55:33 PM)

Forgive and forget...

What normally functional human can actually pull that off?

And when it comes to women, they may forgive, but they NEVER forget.

Speaking of 'wants'...........

              my mom used to tell us kids (when we would beg for things)   "........ and people in hell want ice water.  Get over it.
