How many of the old sayings can you think of that really makes no sense, or perfect sense, as the case may be.

My favorite is one I learned from my CO in the army.

If it dont work the first time, get a much bigger hammer... or call in a massive airstrike.

Hmmm, in the "makes sense" catagory:
"A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush"

That was the first that came to mind, I'd be
interested in what are the first adages that
pop into other peoples minds.

One I have a problem with is "Wake up and smell the coffee."

My problem is that none of the senses are working before I drink at least three cups.

The early bird gets the worm.

Makes sense, I just really hate it. Makes me want to get a worm, throw it at that person and tell them they can have it.

What about "All work and no play" I never had a job that I considered work.

When I was in college, my dad told me the old Career advice of "Do what you're good at and love and the money will come".
I looked him in the eye and said "If you know of any careers that require fishing, fucking and drinking beer, lemme know because that's what I love and I'm good at"

The only thing my dad ever told me was to make good grades and go to the airforce academy.

I turned down my appointment and enlisted in the army to basically piss him off. We have not spoken since I was 18.

A wise friend pointed out the corollary that they never tell you as a kid: The early worm gets eaten.

What about the various "Old, bold" adages?

The one I am most familiar with is "there are old soldiers, and there are bold soldiers, but there are no old bold soldiers."

That one is flawed, the top kick in my company was a CMH awardee. And he was very bold when he earned it.

I was lucky and had a choice.
Several schools up north for a wrestling scholarship to run in the snow and have knee surgery
Annapolis because Jimmy Quillen would have given me the appointment
Or an Academic down to miami to lay in the sun, fuck, fish and drink beer.

I heard that once when I was in the army... It was 10 below...the next morning it was 12 below and snowing.

They get along like a house afire. (or "on fire"--I've heard it both ways.)

I love this one--I use it all the time--but, when I stop to really think about it, I have no idea why two people would get along like a house afire!

Makes about as much sense as "They get along like oil and water."

I like that one.

And how about "A little bit of knowledge is dangerous."
