I laughed when I read this. I'm so tired of hearing people fuss about it every time they get a new letter of golden mail. Still, I'm glad that people do complain when they perceive a problem. It's far better than saying nothing or dropping dark and meaningless hints about the ill doings of the mods.

I'm someone who has been, and continues to be (basically) unhappy with the moderation here. Not because I have been moderated (is that even a word?) myself, but because posters that I enjoy have been, which thereby limits my enjoyment of the site. And no,...I don't just mean Awareness. But he is one of them, of course.

Three points I will address, crazyml, that I saw in your posts on this thread.

1. I come here even when I am not crazy about it because I am invested. Like it or not, I know a good number of the players here, I know who to avoid and who to engage with, and I know which forums I enjoy. I also feel fairly well known and accepted myself, to the point that I don't have a problem speaking up or starting a thread or disagreeing with somebody. Starting over in a new online community I will feel more timid and it will take me time to be as comfortable there as I am here. And finally, I can curse here. There are few places that I can talk about D/s and have a potty mouth without getting banned just for those two things alone.

2. Just because you, or others, think that someone is an "asshole" doesn't mean everyone agrees with you. I rather enjoy the more prominently argumentative posters. They're fun to read. They provide alternative viewpoints that make me think. And it's even a little bit entertaining to watch everyone's panties get into a wad when they're faced with a challenge they can't quite rise to.

3. I once asked a question about what it is that you mentioned: sometimes all that a poster writes is negativity. My comment was "It's rare to see you post a compliment." The response to me was "People usually can find plenty of support so that my additional compliment wouldn't add anything of value to the conversation." And I agree with that. A dissenting opinion leads to conversation and debate.

To a point i agree with you mel. The squeaky wheel does get the grease, but after a while it gets annoying and is left in the back yard and gathers moss - to mix a metaphor or two. Complaining sometimes gets results, but if it doesn't then there is little point in continuing it. It annoys everyone else and doesn't do anything productive.

I've been on this site for a while and enjoy it. I enjoyed the "in your face" threads of a few years ago, and i think they were probably "moded" out of existance, but there are other threads to read. C'est la vie.

I totally agree. But, as I've said here and offline, it's all in the delivery. I don't even mind rude dissenting opinions. What I do mind, is having to sift through pages of mud slinging to get to the meat.

Opinions vary, obviously.

Absolutely. The new Marketing Manager at my company is a catastrophe and over Friday night and Saturday I spent six hours documenting, organizing, and summarizing her failings in two emails that I sent to my CEO. I put a lot of work into this and expect it to bear fruition, unlike if I had simply ranted about her.

I mean seriously... some of the whining shit I've seen here is fucking pitiful.

If you really think the boards have gone to the dogs, that the mods are crazy, and that your ickle-wickle piece of cheese is being moved without your consent, then just fuck off.

I've been coming to this forum off and on for the past couple of years. Actually, it's really not so bad overall, at least when compared to many other forums I've lurked and participated in. I like the wide variety of opinions and the diverse backgrounds of the posters here. It's often difficult to keep up with some of these threads, since each time I visit, there's a few new pages added to some of them.

Even the "whining" threads might have some value, as it might give people the opportunity to see both the positive and negative aspects of a given forum hashed out and discussed.

However, I also agree that if people don't like a website or forum, then there's no real reason to stick around. There are plenty of sites and message boards out there which accommodate a wide variety of viewpoints, from far left to far right, and everything in between.

Some years ago I found a site called Flame Warriors which categorizes different types of message board posters in a satirical way. It's a rather funny site which kind of sums up what happens on message boards and the different styles of poster and cliques which develop.

Even the situation you're addressing is covered under Rebel Without a Clue:

quote:

Rebel Without a Clue's deep seated and infantile hostility to authority motivates his random and seemingly gratuitous attacks on list owners, Admins, Nannies or anyone else who attempts to maintain order and civility in discussion forums. Differing markedly from Rebel Leader, he is unattached to any cause other than petulance for its own sake, and will therefore seldom inspire general insurrection. In his frequent and ineffectual attacks on the established order he will often cite the Bible, or the US Constitution to support incoherent arguments. Rebel Without a Clue NEVER reads forum FAQs , and loudly decries as fascism any enforcement whatsoever of forum rules.

Rebel Leader is a bit different:

quote:

Rebel Leader has an uncanny ability to upset the settled order of a discussion forum. Other Warriors may be excellent in single combat, but Rebel Leader's charisma, political instincts and verbal skills enable him to rally collective assaults powerful enough to overthrow the Royals and silence Cyber Sisters. Rebel Leader may draw allies from almost any of the other Warrior classes, but he can usually count on Loopy in the early stages of the conflict, and Sycophant after the revolution is well underway. Once the revolution has succeeded, however, Rebel Leader quickly loses interest in the cause. As is the case with false King-Fu Masters, the bones of wannabe Rebel Leaders litter the battlefields.

I also pick up litter made by others and recycle.

How dare you?!

Seriously though, I'm all for argumentative posts, pessimism and even some negativity as well as positive, upbeat posts. Variety is the spice of life and all that.

Look:

it is our right as members of the site to complain.

It is our right as members of this site and users of the forum to report people who are advocating something illegal, or attacking people needlessly.

It is our right to tell you for giving us shit about exercising our rights to go fuck yourself with a barbed wire dildo up your ass.

As far as dissenting opinions, I am all for people not agreeing with me, I cant help it that they are wrong or fail to see that I am right.

I also cannot help it if they cannot see that I was put on this planet by god to enlighten the people who do not know the truth, although in this situation it is impossible for me to beat the truth into them by pummeling them with oatmeal and chocolate chip cookies.

I see the "trouble posts" AS the meat of conversations. It adds to the flavor and helps to make the conversation all the more juicier.

I pretty much agree with DaddySatyr on all points. Somewhere there is a balance between offering up constructive criticism to try to improve the site for all of us and "whining and moaning".

Ahhh a whinging thread about whining. How cute! Replete with some made-up person-similarities-in-the-swearing department.

A big hairy baby stomping his big old foot and screaming and swearing, how lovely. What else ya got?
