brightspot -> I have noticed something and wonder... (6/19/2006 6:12:11 AM)

I have noticed on the forums here and I don't think it is a new thing but it definately has become more prevalent so I am wondering about a couple things and what are peoples thought's.

I have read threads that start out as fluid discussions about certain subjects and then some of them turn into a thread of people talking in what I experience as "Chat room" conversations where a few people talk to each other on a more personal level using "chit chat" and then describe an action that they "do" by themselves or in "interaction" with another in the conversation, well I think most know "Chat room chatter".

Has anyone else noticed an increase in this?
How do you feel about "Chat Room" communication here on the forums?
How many regulars here have extensive chat room history?
How many of you jump in and feed the chat room banter?
Or is there some of you that look at it as juvenile behavior with usually little value?

I personally don't like chat rooms and avoid them, so I am curious how others feel about "chat room banter" taking place here at CM forums.

Thanks in advance for your imput,

*Brightspot

I popped in once or twice a long time ago and thought the chat was juvenile and inane and haven't tried it since.

G'morning all:

bs, you too? Page after page of snappy little one liners off topic in a more personal vein. Sometimes I just avoid a thread altogether when this occurs. It's tiresome. There are chat rooms for this behavior. I wish the posters would realize this and utilize them. Not that I find the situation juvenile, just distasteful. It's not the appropriate medium.

I do use a chat room to communicate with friends, not collarme though. The Alt.com chat rooms are more specific, ie; area, interest. It's where I've met many of my buddies.

Stay safe, play nice, & share your toys w/ others...

Yeah I think it started on the second discussion thread anyone ever created online.

"Fluff posting" is an integral part of the social make up and structure of any online forum.  A certain amount of it keeps things connected, establishes heirarchy, broadens the topic and usually signals the end of the productivity within a discussion.

Overkill of course is undesireable.  This is when a clique mindset is created (sometimes even purposefully) and no actual discussion occurs.  In fact, dissension can arise from the situation due to those who want to discuss vs those who want to play.

Since 98- which isn't really THAT long, but it's good.

I'm a fast enough typist, I know how to balance fluff posts WITH discussion posts.

Again, it's all how you look at it and how you are involved in it.  Everyone gets fluffy sometimes, it just takes a balance.

lisa1978 -> RE: I have noticed something and wonder... (6/19/2006 7:28:01 AM)

I am not a fan of chatroom banter but you have to accept it as part of cyber life. All message boards on the Internet have it. I have seen some where moderators try to control it but it has little effect. Personally, it does not bug me too much. Yes, some promising threads get hijacked by this type of behavior and I will just ignore them. I do sometimes spot certain people who seem to only post in this fashion and it certainly does make me form an unfavorable opinion of them, but that is strictly my issues and not theirs.

I agree with LA 100% on the certain amount is healthy and too much can be too cliquesh. Many times when it becomes too much no one is at fault but all contributed to the problem.

As far as real chatrooms go, I am a total snob. I will sometimes pop into them for a good laugh. If I have time to waste and want to connect with people, I pick up a phone and call family and friends. I have found some good friends posting on message boards but none through chat rooms.

pahunkboy -> RE: I have noticed something and wonder... (6/19/2006 7:57:21 AM)

Message boards are classier then chat room.

Chat rooms are A/S/L, and wankers.

I suppose a message board could sink into disarray. [tho] I doubt a chat room would rise to anything inteligent.

Just my opinion.

They can for brief periods.  The nature of the chat is that everything happens fairly quickly.  Good discussions can bloom and grow, but they quickly get overturned by the after work/pre-dinner crowd who want to just chit chat.  But it also means the bad stuff passes quickly as well.  You do something and 2 days later, no one really remembers it unless it's part of their own personal drama.

One of the fascinating things about chat culture is the memory and self-association of a group works VERY actively to maintain its status quo.  Rooms, over time, develop their own group personality which attract and repel people according to how they fit into that group (which of course serves to maintain the process).  Sadly this fosters a lot of group mind thinking rather than encouraging dissenting views and perspectives- leading a lot of people completely unprepared to deal with dissension when it crosses their path when they step into the discussion forum culture.

Tamerofwild1s -> RE: I have noticed something and wonder... (6/19/2006 8:11:07 AM)

good opinion pahunk and LA ..... I personally once in awhile throw the "fluff" out there especially if the thread is getting a bit too aggitated and aggressive .... nothing wrong with a little light banter in it. tends to make things relax a bit then the thread can back on track with it's original direction of searching for information on a topic

 just MHO

MistressLorelei -> RE: I have noticed something and wonder... (6/19/2006 8:55:34 AM)

I was thinking of posing a similar question.  I haven't been on the forums for long, and don't know if it's more prevalent now, or not, but it does seem like there a few "cliques", and a lot of  personal banter.  I do not like chatrooms at all.  I was involved in one for a few months several years ago, and that was enough to last me a lifetime.  I think it's fine for the fluffy stuff to be in the fluffy stuff threads, but find them a bit distracting in the more serious threads.  A really great  one-liner is fun sometimes, but  some things work best in moderation.  I find that I don't participate very often in the 'banter', but get the urge on occasion.  I like the forums as an information source, or brain candy, but am perfectly capable of bypassing the fluff when I want to.

sabswife -> RE: I have noticed something and wonder... (6/19/2006 9:10:41 AM)

i personally like a bit of banter thrown in, gives a more rounded insight to the people i suppose, at least to me.  but then i like to banter in real life, and i also enjoy chat many rooms, tho some really do suck.

pahunkboy -> RE: I have noticed something and wonder... (6/19/2006 9:49:01 AM)

If someone lives their life, online. I would suspect, meeting in real life, might be not possible.

Just a guess.

pahunkboy -> RE: I have noticed something and wonder... (6/19/2006 9:52:02 AM)

If someone does the A/S/L to me. I usually dont reply.

Thats 1997ish.

Check the profile! duh.

I also dislike when I am grilled for info- and no reciprical info is provided. The other person could want more 1000%, but if I have nothing to size them up, it is pointless.

I think everything has its time and place, and the place for chatroom banter is in a chatroom.  Occasionally it will add a little fun to the forum proceedings, but you're right, it has run rampant around here recently.  It doesn't bother me enough to say much about it, but sometimes it can get irritating.

I've never spent any real time in chatrooms.  It all seems too imaginary for my tastes.  I prefer to have real conversations, instead of made up parties.  With that said, I will contribute to it very rarely.

OedipusRexIt -> RE: I have noticed something and wonder... (6/19/2006 10:22:01 AM)

To the OP:

I had considered starting a thread on this topic as well.  I think of this situation (chit-chat) as "tea parties", wherein a few people hijack a thread with their back and forth banter.

You know, something like:

MsMustPost:  "Oh Girlfriend, you are always so right"
ForumFannie:  "No, you're the one who's right, sweetie"
PervyNerd:   "oooh.  I gotta get in between U 2"

And then, whatever actual discussion you had going falls apart, wasting a good thread.  People scatter, and the intellect level plummets...

No way around it in an open forum, but it sure does smack of chat-room vapidity.

juliaoceania -> RE: I have noticed something and wonder... (6/19/2006 11:08:14 AM)

If someone's posts does not appeal to me I pass it by. It is rather easy not to read a post that says nothing more than..."lol". I try not to do this myself much, but I think I have a time or two just wrote a line commenting or questioning another person's post, or joking with someone. I have seen this on other forums I post on.

I have used chatrooms extensively. I do not use them anymore (or rarely), and I have not been one to frequent BDSM chat. The chatrooms I went to were far more intellectual in format than BDSM forums or chat, so it would be like comparing apples and oranges (I am not always in the mood for deep intellectual conversations personally anyhow).

I do not think it is "juvenile" to joke and laugh and communicate... most people I enjoy would be considered juvenile if that were the case... although hijacking a thread with it could be considered inappropriate by some I suppose.

Like I said... scroll past the superfluous posts if they annoy you, because people will do what they will do.

Arpig -> RE: I have noticed something and wonder... (6/19/2006 11:24:47 AM)

Doesn't really bother me, some of it is funny, and some I just ignore

kisshou -> RE: I have noticed something and wonder... (6/20/2006 5:05:55 AM)

I like it, I like seeing who likes each other and who is flirting with each other. I think it makes the forums more fun.

I once went into a chat room here and asked if anyone participated in the forums, the replies I got stated that everyone on the forums was an a$$hole who just liked to argue.  Makes me laugh to think about it. Two separate but elitist groups! :P
