I'm curious how popular it really is. I know there are two different kinds, the kind with powerboxes, TENS type units and some with the violet wand. They are completely different sensations.
Which do you prefer? Have you ever tried either or both? Why or why not?
I'm really interested in the opinion of the BDSM community in general about this. Thanks!

I've had a TENS unit used on me. Can't say I particularly like it. I personally thought it hurt like hell. Master has a little zapper toy as well and that thing just stings.

I've also had a violet wand used on me and I absolutely adore those. They're kinda like when you get zapped by static electricity. It's kinda like a light massage after awhile of it being used.

We've done both. I've got a vintage wand that's been modernized to make it safe. I've also got a variety of e-stim boxes. My favorite one of these is our ET-512. It's programmable, has some great features, and is just plain amazing.

Been there. Done that. Both ways. Always happy to go back and do it again. Tens units, violet wands, etc are among my absolute favorite things.

I have done tens, estim, the wand, a stinger, a modified cattle prod, and some nipple things that run on different channels. They all rock. Different sensations

I straddled an electric horse fence passing from one pasture to another a couple years ago thinking "SOMEONE" who had just gone into the barn had turned it off for Me. Dispite the fact that I was wearing jeans the current hit Me bingo right in the joy button and I almost PUKED it hurt so bad (the fence tester I use measures to 6,000v and the lights come on beyond that reading, so who knows how much I received). I do not recommend THAT!!!! However, if you are one of those whacky pain sluts who likes to push his limits and enjoy extreme pain combined with convulsive DANCING, come on over and I'll put you to work fixing 7 acres of electric fence lines broken by deer and horses...you can get all the electro-Play you want!

My physical therapist used something electrical for the muscles along My spine once...it LOOKED like a TENS unit...I took one look at the thing and told him quite firmly that if it hurt in the slightest I was going to do (*CENSORED FOR EXTREME BLOOD AND PROFANITY*) to him. He was very careful and had it on a low setting so it simply stimulated My muscles, causing them to slowly twitch and crawl. It felt like a hundred BUGS crawling around under My skin...really creepy, but I have to say it was definitely INTERESTING. I would certainly never be dumb enough to let someone TIE ME UP to apply electricity, but as part of a massage therapy type thing, sure.

LOL on my lands I have too. This is a very rural farming/ ranching area. While out at a friend's place playing pasture golf and I backed into an electric fence on accident. It did feel like someone kicked me. I felt like an idiot since I knew it was there and I backed into anyways.

Off topic but I lived in Maine for a few years after my mom and dad split. :) Loved it there.

Are we talking 110 or 220?

Household current or, something that may require a 50 KW generator with a diesel backup?

I tried a TENS a couple times- not my cup of tea at all. Violet wand is not too bad, but still not my bag.

After seeing someone quite literally get thrown across a room from unintentionally being electrocuted in a vanilla setting...I have no desire to mess with it.

I've gotten small shocks from changing lighting fixtures thinking the main breaker was off or having a wire on something short out. It stung, turned the tips of my fingers black for a minute but never threw me across a room thankfully lol.

Master wants a cattle prod though.

My husband has been electrocuted so many times. He has been thrown off a ladder at work from changing a high wattage light fixture that was not wired correctly to an old TV set we had. So what did he do. He became the manager of the electrical department at a home improvement store. He is actually really good at handling electricity, when it is wired correctly that is.

Used TENS for pain a number of years. Only issue I ever had was when one of the leads came loose as unit was turned on...literally blew me off the massage table!! Talk about shocking!

Violet wand was pleasurable.
I've had some small e-stim units that were nothing but disappointing

I'm the exact opposite in terms of preference, but I do agree that the TENS can hurt like hell. My unit also has EMS settings and I use it three ways:

- therapeutically (just like the chiropractor does - TENS continuous on a low setting)
- for pleasure (EMS)
- and potentially for pain (TENS continuous on a higher setting.) M and I messed around with this is little but it was nothing like what The Sadist in Florida did - that had me shrieking like an opera singer.

In a past relationship he had a TENS and a violet wand. He tied me once, hands behind my back, blindfolded me, and used the TENS on my nipples -- very low setting at first and gradually increased. It was tolerable; I don't remember particularly liking it, but I didn't dislike it, either.

Then, without lowering the setting, he zapped my clit. Didn't matter that I was tied, he had to peel me off the fucking wall, and after that I curled up in a very tight ball and sobbed and didn't want him to touch me.

So at a future date, when he did use the violet wand, he started on a low setting and kept it there, and it really didn't do anything for me; I was pretty indifferent. But I think after the TENS incident, he wasn't going to chance increasing the volume on it, either.

Have a Zeus which has 9 pre-programmed routines like massage, acupuncture, naprapathy, & etc. The scraping will make me cum but if left on post orgasm is pure torture.

They are actually divided into two categories. A TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation), uses micro electrical pulses to stimulate nerves. These trick them into thinking the impulses come from the brain, and act accordingly. Muscles contract, pain centers fire, etc. Violet wand is actually a handheld electrostatic generator, producing static shocks. These can have varied sensations depending on applicator used and setup, but a good analogy is rubbing your socked feet on a rug, then touching a person or metal. Bug zappers, cattle prods, etc, are similar to stun guns. They produce a higher concentrated static shock, and can be quite painful

Darkfeather, it doesn't feel anything like a static shock though because its continuous.
I'm one of these people who seem to be full of static I touch a car door and I'm zapped, I touch a supermarket trolley and I'm zapped. Its a horrible thing and yet I will use the voilet wand on me until my skin is sore because I love the feeling it gives... only on the bulb mind.
We do have estim but I prefer to use it on other people. Like others here, I spent too many years accidentally being zapped by electric fences.

I have an irregular heartbeat. I had to wear a heart monitor for a month and have an echo cardiogram done and it all came back as a harmless arrhythmia but from what I read I can never use any of that due to my out of whack heartbeat. :(
