Cats are chopping down trees now and causing oil spills? Do tell....

I was saying that people are the problem not cats,
cats are only a symptom of the all eclipsing shadow
we cast.

quote:

Captain James Cook and later whalers and sealers introduced cats (Felis catus), but these did not become common until the 1830s. In the 1870s, rabbit numbers were driving farmers from their land, so quantities of cats were released to control them.

Unfortunately, when the love and fun of having a pet cat or dog is over, the animals are usually abandoned.

Maybe we should just get rid of all the people who don't spay and neuter, thus creating the over-population of cats that are threatening the birds...

Can we make this a global thing?? Would solve animal shelter crisis & troll breeding all in one swoop

Well that would probably get rid of most of the terminally stupid people on the planet, but i do believe it might be called a crime against humanity and said to be a form of Eugenics.

Not Genocide since we would not be limiting it to one race.

You do know that ever person who has spayed or neutered a cat is placed on a list put together by their Alien overlords for extreme torture. Last I heard it was watching reality tv in Old English and Russian.

Perhaps if he advocates neutering programs for the feral cats like they do here in several American cities. I know Fort Worth has such a program and the cats are tracked for scientific purposes.

They don't need to. I think the Kiwis just kill feral cats.

Very cool cattery, MDA!!

FR

Bearing in mind that most of what I know about NZ's fauna comes from Last Chance to See, by Douglas Adams, which I read a long time ago: NZ is something of a special case, ecologically speaking. From what I remember, the main point was that the species of islands in general are more specialised than those of continents. They're not as tough, to put it crudely. There's a flightless parrot, for instance, that lays its eggs on the ground. And these parrots mate only rarely, and produce few eggs. (In fact one per season, IIRC.) No way would such a species last even in the UK, let alone North America.

Domestic cats and rats (no matter how cute - and even rats can be cute), on the other hand, are very 'tough' indeed. They can live pretty much anywhere. Part of their toughness lies in their ability to get hold of and eat very wide ranges of foods. They also breed easily. That's the problem here, I think. Letting a cat roam free in NZ seems to be much like letting an armed, serial-killing psycho wander around a cosy Devon village.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: Make Cats Extinct? (1/24/2013 10:31:09 AM)

I would support some how not letting them roam free and kill all the animals they kill, but not making them extinct.

LafayetteLady -> RE: Make Cats Extinct? (1/24/2013 11:16:19 AM)

I understand completely the issues they face.  However, attempting to eliminate people's pets is not only an unpopular solution it is really never going to work.

I would not disagree with people having to keep their cats indoors.  At the same time though, there will always be some strays and ferals that are going to be around.  Even if this guy got his way and people didn't get additional cats when their current ones died, those others would still exist.

Seems like just yet one more person going for the most shocking and ridiculous thing in order to get his cause in the spotlight.

EsotericLady -> RE: Make Cats Extinct? (1/24/2013 11:17:11 AM)

Hello everyone! And yes, I'm back again! : )

I have read a very interesting article I would like to introduce to the thread that was published in "The Atlantic" in regard to an interview that was done with the New Zealand Economist who started the idea of cat elimination:

http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2013/01/the-end-of-cats-an-interview-with-the-new-zealand-economist-calling-to-eliminate-all-kitties/272474/

I found of special note:

1. The mention of a loss of tourist revenue (might this not be the predominant, underlaying concern in all this?)

2. An acknowledgement that New Zealand has horrible environmental and pollution problems (might this not drive songbirds in search of a cleaner environment?)

Just some interesting things to ponder, I thought. Hope you enjoy the article!

Phoenixpower -> RE: Make Cats Extinct? (1/24/2013 11:29:38 AM)

Well....then he can be lucky that I never met my date down there some years ago....cause if we would have met and if we would have decided that I would have come down to him....then I would have brought my 5 cats along [:D] (these days I have 4 since Spicy got missing last july but in that case it would have been 5).

now....over here I would never have my cats in a cattery only....though if i would live in a country like New Zealand i would research it properly and if it is as better as it might be according to this threat, then I would be willing to do that....however over here....nope, not gonna happen.

Does New Zealand also have snakes? If so, those are threatening the birds too I'm sure.
No. Not a one. New Zealand has no snakes.

Typical governmental bureaucrat thinking he can save the world from 'sin'.
No, I think you'll find it's the religious right who want to save the world from sin. Government bureaucrats really don't give a crap.

In any case, Gareth Morgan is a businessman and philanthropist whose primary training was in economics. His point is that cats are an introduced pest which run around killing native species by the dozen. New Zealand and Australia have extraordinary levels of biodiversity not seen anywhere else in the world and Fluffy and his fellow friends are a threat to that.

In that sense he's right. So he has a reasonable rationale for what he's saying, but I doubt he realises just how many women use cats as proxies for children. So I think he's up against it.

What about a bit of lateral think on this subject? Specifically, are there any cute indigenous species that might make good pets that could (at least partly) take the place of cats?

(Produce pictures, TAFKAA. This is your opportunity to show the hitherto unseen fluffy side of yourself. [;)])

Hahahahaha! TAFKAA has a fluffy side? Now THIS I'd like to see!

oops that should have read c-o-u-c-h!! grrr!

Oh I also read, at the same time as I read the article I sent a link to, that some area of the country became overrun by rats after getting rid of all their cats.

I think I'd rather put up with cats than rats! (shudders and makes a face)
