One more reason a meteor needs to fall out of the sky, and land on the mullahs.

Let's see if I have this right.
A pastor goes to a foreign country and does something that he knows is illegal and everyone is surprised when he goes to jail.

He wanted to be a 'martyr for his cause' and they obliged him.

I do agree with this sentiment.

Add to this the fact that the pastor is actually Iranian born but he and his family live in the U.S. (I assume this means they are legal immigrants to the country). The article does not specify if he is a U.S. citizen or still an Iranian passport holder. Regardless, this was someone who knew exactly what would happen to him if he engaged in the activities he engaged in - he was born there. This is NOT a case of someone completely unfamiliar with Iranian law stumbling into an arrest inadvertently.

Currently there are many places that do not legally recognize freedom of religion. And while we can all have a discussion around how freedom of religion is a fundamental human right, change is not going to come to some of these places without people challenging the existing law. So I see this guy as someone like a Martin Luther King, Jr. type who disagrees with a law, violates the law, gets arrested, and gets valuable media attention to his cause of trying to bring this freedom to his country. This is how fundamental changes are made. Challenging unfair laws and drawing attention to the unfairness.

So, unless people think the tactics of the Civil Rights movement in the U.S. were stupid, I think we have to see this for what it is. When Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus, a police officer arrested her. As the officer took her away, she asked, "Why do you push us around?" She remembered him saying, "I don't know, but the law's the law, and you're under arrest." In addition, she lost her job at a department store due to her arrest.

Hopefully over time, the people of Iran will embrace freedom of religion. But that change is not going to come easily or quickly.

What if they come here and we are forced to abide by their laws and customs?

I may not agree with their laws, and they sure as hell dont agree with ours, but when in another country, you abide by their laws, not US laws.

Unless of course you are advocating the idea that we invade Iran and make it the 51st state?

Somebody tell tazzy to quit being logical

Jeff: oh HELL no, no invasion.

I just have a great dislike for the extremists; and Iran should be a prosperous country, and our ally..

Thank god, that would take troops away from the trumped up war to invade the Playboy mansion.

Not good enough. We need to get them together with certain whacko Rabbis and Fundamentalist pastors. Unfortunately, meteors tend to be uncooperative when you want one. But it would probably suffice to just lock the doors and wait.

Sadly, that became unlikely to continue indefinitely when the CIA deposed a democratically elected secular leader and put the Shah back in power in the '50s.

You have to bring up our interfering CIA, didnt you?

You just could not blame the French, or maybe the Vatican?

Well this is the right idea because the pastor has those rights but the Iranians do not protect and seeks to foreclose upon them.

Like a black man voluntarily coming to the American south back in the century and not expecting to be enslaved. Yes, he knew he just might be, in accordance with slave law at the time but that doesn't make him necessarily a fool or wrong.

The pastor was trying to act out his choice of travel and maybe even spread a message. Iran doesn't allow those rights, i.e., the right of free movement, expression or of religion so...8 years dude.

..plus the Shah was a fascist, despotic prick. What is a bit amazing is that Iran practiced democracy post WWII after they jumped in bed with Hitler...especially over the 'final solution.'

.....I am thinking Mexico should be next. Too many 'illegals' plus we take and divvy up the oil amongst our great, glorious, free market [sic] oil oligoploy. Two birds with one stone hey ?

Kinkroids, we are not that far away. In great 'liberal' America during the 1973 arab oil embargo, I actually heard more than one person say...'We should just go over there and take it.'

The whole idea of entitlement and of course our inalienable right to a profit...means war baby.

Sorry, but I am in favor of getting away from fossil fuels and looking into sustainable sources to power our economy.

Of course of all the wars the US has been involved with the last decade, an invasion of Mexico to deal with the drug cartels could be justified.

Black Jack Pershing did it under orders to deal with Pancho Villa, and it is legal under the laws of the states for federal troops to patrol the borders, they were doing that up to around 1920-25 if memory serves.

My paternal Grandparents are from Esfahan, so I tend to take interest in Iranian politics. The Pastor likely knew exactly what he was getting himself into, but it doesn't make it right. Iran is under an oppressive regime, that's not exactly a secret. It is not illegal to be a Christian or a Jew, but there are many apostasy laws on the book. While I am not a Christian, my heart goes out to the Pastor's family.

For those interested, no, I have never been to Iran, as Bisexual Pagans aren't well received, and, also for those interested, Persian is both an ethnic group and a language, Iranian is a nationality. Plenty of Iranians are not Persian.
