For those interested, no, I have never been to Iran, as Bisexual Pagans aren't well received, and, also for those interested, Persian is both an ethnic group and a language, Iranian is a nationality. Plenty of Iranians are not Persian.

Oh? I would not know why, I mean considering they are fanatic about their religious leaders running the country. It is not like you are going to perform a virgin sacrifice in the center of Tehran, or are you?

Who, me? Never...

Another thing to try and understand about Iranian politics is that Amedinajad is by no means in power or control. The Ayatollahs are. All the talk for Democracy and election reform aimed at Amendinajad is silly. It will only work if the Ayatollahs allow it to. With a wave of their hands, Amendinajad can be out of office, the country could become Socialist, ect. It is at the will of the Ayatollahs. Persia has a long and lengthy history of religion dominating politics, from Islam (Especially the modern Islamic Republic of Iran), but goes even further back, both Islamic and even in the days of old Aryana ("Iran" is Parsi/Farsi for "Aryan", btw).

Somebody tell tazzy to quit being logical

Jeff: oh HELL no, no invasion.

I just have a great dislike for the extremists; and Iran should be a prosperous country, and our ally..

Thank god, that would take troops away from the trumped up war to invade the Playboy mansion.

.....I am thinking Mexico should be next. Too many 'illegals' plus we take and divvy up the oil amongst our great, glorious, free market [sic] oil oligoploy. Two birds with one stone hey ?

Kinkroids, we are not that far away. In great 'liberal' America during the 1973 arab oil embargo, I actually heard more than one person say...'We should just go over there and take it.'

The whole idea of entitlement and of course our inalienable right to a profit...means war baby.

Sorry, but I am in favor of getting away from fossil fuels and looking into sustainable sources to power our economy.

Of course of all the wars the US has been involved with the last decade, an invasion of Mexico to deal with the drug cartels could be justified.

Black Jack Pershing did it under orders to deal with Pancho Villa, and it is legal under the laws of the states for federal troops to patrol the borders, they were doing that up to around 1920-25 if memory serves.

Sorry, I am too and we all should be really, but this is as always not about what we 'want.' It is not about energy or oil. It is all about money.

Actually such 'American' wars go back to 1898 and the Spanish-American war. (most of which were/are for Standard Oil) The conception of which drawn by Winfield Scott's invasion (circa 1840's) going deep into Mexico to redraw that border. Had to start somewhere and who knew there was oil in them thar hills.

But think about the beauty of it for the capitalist...oil profits and all but stopping not illegals but the criminals coming 'up south' as they used to say about the blacks.

Slightly fewer drugs, illegal/legal modern slaves...er labor, all of that oil...less crime. A foreign policy home run.

They have come here and have practiced their religion and have abided our laws and customs. I think the link says more about the oppression in Iran than their laws.

The Pastor likely knew exactly what he was getting himself into, but it doesn't make it right. Iran is under an oppressive regime, that's not exactly a secret.

Yup.

So, if some Somalian came over to New York and cut his daughter's clit off, you don't think he should be prosecuted under the local law because he was acting under the dictates of his conscience, then?

Wow, can't believe I missed this. Yes, we do come here. Yes, we do practice our faith/faiths. Yes, we do abide by the laws and customs. I am a Persian-American, I am very open about that. While I am not a Muslim, most of my father's family is. None of us are in prison, none of us are thugs, none of us practice honor killings, none of us plot/wage a holy war, and none of us advocate/practice Sharia.

There is so much fear in this country about those of us either from the Islamic world or descended from it. There is great fear of Islam. If you were to meet a Wahabi, I'd be amazed, and even more amazed if you met a Salafi. Those who think all Muslims are violent or Islam is by nature violent should research Sufism, which I myself flirted greatly with, and still find myself drawn to it.

There is nothing dark and mysterious about us. Most people who meet me assume I am Italian or maybe a lightly-skinned Hispanic, not understanding what a Persian is. When my grandparents came here as older children, their parents learned English (no such thing as a press 2 for Parsi option then) and faced great prejudice. My Grandparents embraced America. My Grandfather began pronouncing our surname deliberately incorrectly to make it more "American". He became an engineer. My Grandmother became a Chemist.

I can write on and on about those of us from/descended from the Islamic world. Right here, right now, a "Middle-Easterner" is talking to you all and posting pictures of scantily clad men and women, not condemning anyone or hurling insults. I have never in my life felt compelled to kill anyone, certainly not for "honor".

Such a thang as simple right and wrong no matter da law. Religious freedom vs. imposed cruel tribal custom = no contest.

How da ya know he broke da law? Seems it ain't so much bout law as absolute state control wit Dr. Adinna a' watching ya...

quote:

Iran's semi-official news agency, ISNA, quoted Abedini's attorney, Nasser Sarbazi, as saying his client stood trial in the Revolutionary Court on charges of attempting to undermine state security by creating a network of Christian churches in private homes.

The pastor, who is of Iranian origin but lives in Boise, Idaho, has rejected the charges.

Just to be sure we are on the same page...My comments were not a criticism of Persians in America. Some in this thread seems to be defending Iran’s right to punish this man for doing what is encouraged and legal in the US. I think it is wrong and shows the suppression of human rights.
