Seems a deal may be near. Do you think making a way for illegal immigrants to stay, and work towards citizenship is a good idea, or do you think they've broken the law, and should be deported?

The poll is speaking about those that haven't been in other legal trouble other than being here illegaly.

tazzygirl -> RE: Immigration Reform (1/28/2013 3:55:06 PM)

For some, yes, for all, no. You left no option about their records while here or their home country.

Level -> RE: Immigration Reform (1/28/2013 3:57:48 PM)

Do you mean criminal record, or?

jlf1961 -> RE: Immigration Reform (1/28/2013 5:15:00 PM)

I actually have a mixed view, for those that have been in the US for less than five years, put them in prison work camps for five years then deport their asses.

From 5 to 10 years, evaluate them and if they are actually working in something other than migrant farm workers, take it at a case by case basis.

Anything longer than that, I would suggest amnesty.

As for partoling the border, while US troops cannot conduct combat operations on US soil baring a civil war, they can be used to patrol the border.

So, take all the troops coming back not being used any more in Iraq or Afghanistan and put them on duty patrolling the border. Put money into flooding the area within two miles of the border with movement sensors, seismic sensors to detect tunneling, and build a better fucking fence.

Oh, and if they have been here over 10 years and still cant speak fluent English, then deport them.

I am not being sarcastic, we are having problems covering the needs of poor American citizens, I am not in favor of paying for poor illegal aliens.

Yes, I do mean criminal record. Hell, most of our own citizens cant stay out of trouble. If someone can come to this country, manage to make a living and live under the radar without breaking the law, why shouldnt they stay? If they have a criminal record, back they go.

Level -> RE: Immigration Reform (1/28/2013 5:38:34 PM)

Agreed, tazzy.

So far, 7 go homes, 1 work it out and stay.

Toysinbabeland -> RE: Immigration Reform (1/28/2013 5:52:52 PM)

I'm not nice about this at all.
Make them pay for the cost of deporting them, and escort them out.
If they show up again, work prison for debtors and make them pay for the deportation of ten other illegal aliens.
Third strike, they must be rendered infertile and forced to work in the dmv.

The OP stipulated that the illegal immigrants this poll referred to "haven't been in other legal trouble other than being here illegaly [sic]."

So, your answer would be to allow them to stay.

DesideriScuri -> RE: Immigration Reform (1/28/2013 6:52:03 PM)

FR,

I was the 10th "deport 'em" in the poll. They broke our immigration laws. They go home. While I favor deportation and beefed up border security, I also favor improving the immigration process so that more of them can get here legally, and in a significantly shorter length of time. Improve the rules to reduce the rate of illegal immigration.

DaddySatyr -> RE: Immigration Reform (1/28/2013 7:02:31 PM)

If they get arrested for being here, illegally, doesn't that give them a criminal record?

PeonForHer -> RE: Immigration Reform (1/28/2013 7:12:54 PM)

I think that if people can't live in a civilised way and refuse to learn not to be savage and bestial, they should be deported back to the USA.

Level -> RE: Immigration Reform (1/28/2013 7:17:00 PM)

FR

For one thing, I doubt we could deport them all if we tried. It's just not gonna happen.

That's why I say get rid of them. They can't respect our laws,
I won't respect them.

Your affection and respect for my country is heart-warming. I can only hope for some circumstance to arise which will allow us to return the favor.

K.

If it helps, I think you'd be allowed to stay in the country, Kirata, to do fruit-picking work or similar. You look well-seasoned. [:)]

The OP added that stipulation after my post.

I think that the government is also looking at it from the viewpoint of our relations with Mexico, as well as elements in the business community which have benefited from hiring illegal immigrants. The public seems to be divided on the issue.

They've broken the law, but they've certainly had a lot of help from our side of the border, including the government which has done very little about the issue. This bit of irony isn't lost on our neighbors to the south, so they would see a mass deportation as unfairly blaming their citizens just trying to earn a buck, while letting the real criminals on our side of the border get off scot-free. Questions like that have to be handled delicately.

There's also the problem with border security, so even if they are deported, they'll still try to come back, especially with those who have relatives in the U.S.

Then there's Mexico itself, with which we should probably try to work some sort of more coherent relationship. It's supposed to be a "friendly" relationship, but there's always this bit of history which is still remembered. We need to have closer and more equal ties with each other. That may be a way to survive the global economic turbulence. If some other world power becomes unstable or starts saber-rattling, it might be better to have Mexico on our side than a potential enemy (or client state of an even bigger enemy).

That's where the immigration reform question becomes complicated. I think that in the debate over immigration, Mexico might be taken for granted, and there's also some degree of disregard and even outright hostility towards Mexico that I've sensed lately. Mexico does have a lot of problems, and things are kind of messed up down there, especially with these ongoing cartel wars. No kind of immigration reform can really work unless that question is also examined.

It does not inspire much confidence in British education to find one of the most highly educated people using these forums (in his own opinion, at least) descending to personal comments about another poster's appearance.

PeonForHer -> RE: Immigration Reform (1/28/2013 8:26:19 PM)

Actually, I was talking about how you looked like you could probably manage a day's work, K. I have no interest in your appearance besides that, you'll be cheered to know.
