Sending you good thoughts and best wishes, dc.

dcnovice -> RE: Got Prayers? (Or Good Wishes?) (3/7/2013 9:15:15 PM)

Oncology waiting rooms, I learned today, are home to some amazing stories.

I met a man whose wife had 30 tumors--and no, that number is no typo--plucked from her lungs five years ago. The docs back then gave her a one-in-five chance of seeing out another year.

Now, alas, the cancer is back: a fist-size tumor in her lung and (their real heartbreak) a tumor in the brain.

Found myself remembering a favorite bit of old wisdom: "Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle."

Good thoughts from SoCal, DC.

(should I check the spam filter?)

DC, you got mail, hon!

There's a couple who are friends of mine. The husband has brain cancer when I moved away, and things were looking rough. When I came back to town after six years, I was afraid to go and see his wife, not knowing what to say if it turned out her husband was gone. He opened the door when I knocked--and he's doing great.

Gotta keep the faith! New stuff happens every single day in oncology.

So...what is your prognosis?

YES!

I've started using the radiation sessions as opportunities to make gratitude lists in my head.

They do seem to go much faster now. Of course, that could also be the techs' being used to me by now.

You're on radiation?

Yes. It's the first leg of what I call the oncology triathlon: chemo-radiation (radiation synced to small doses of oral meds), then surgery, then traditional chemo.

DC, your ability to take everything thrown at you and spin it into something good amazes me. You're unstoppable. Carry on!

<blushes>

It's funny: The gratitude idea just came to me. Or so I thought.

Only later did I remember that giving thanks was a key lesson of one of my favorite books: The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom.

You can get the gist of the story here.

If you don't want to read the whole thing, start at "The move to permanent quarters came the second week in October."

Best news to read all week!
You are doing all the right things good for both your body and soul.

Nine radiation sessions down.

Nineteen to go.

I can do this.
