It is a lot easier to do needle play these days than it was back when I started doing it. You can order hypodermic needles from Amazon, price is right and you have a choice of gauges. Back in the day it was a lot more difficult, in many places pharmacies won't sell hypodermic needles without something from a doctor. The names of mail order places that would deal with scene people were kind of a guarded secret back then....so it is cool that these days it is a lot easier. I agree with others, lot easier to use disposable ones rather than trying to sterilize them. One hint, we used alcohol wipes on the area to be pierced (which if it hadn't totally evaporated, also added to the feeling (*lol*).
In terms of why, speaking as someone who has ended up looking like a pin cushion, it puts me into a very, very different state then other forms of play, it generates a different response (also helps my lady just gets this incredible energy about her while doing it to me...:). Combing play piercings with light flogging, or running a piece of fur or rough cloth over the piercing area, has its own charms, too:).
