ORIGINAL: jlf1961 As for teaching creationism, I consider myself an average Christian, not a 24 point capital "C" Christian, like some. I believe that God initiated the big bang, then allowed the Universe to progress at its own speed, and evolve under natural and physical laws that are universal. Being Omnipotent, he knew what would happen, so he just let it happen. That explains the continued expansion of the Universe, the laws of physics and natural selection and evolution to work. All of which I and any sane individual of faith cannot deny. Of course, he may have had direct control in the creation of somethings, I mean have you seen a platypus? Proves God has a sense of humor. Lets face it, creationism and the whole "the earth is less than 20000 years old" stuff has been proved wrong geologically, as well as with fossil records. And the "Intelligent Design" theory falls short when you consider the existence of the people who need the warning label on chainsaws that state "Do not attempt to stop blade with hands or genitals." On the other hand, speaking as a smith who kept a lamp burning in front of an image of Brigde in my forge, the existence of temper colours on steel does strain my scientific materialism. I mean, the fact that such a common material as iron can, with the right admixtures and heat treatment, be made into anything from springs to stone chisels could be the same "if it wasn't that way, we wouldn't be here and cultured enough to comment on it" as all the rest of the weak anthropic principle. But that it comes with built in colour-codes to tell us when it's the right temperature for different hardnesses? That is a gift of the gods, I can't see it any other way.
