As my (very devoutly Catholic) political science professor once said: "If you don't believe that evolution is basically right, then you're a fucking moron." (He had such a way with words, as you can see)

I don't know if I'd go so far as to call it child abuse, but it's certainly irresponsible and closed-mindedness.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Physicist: Teaching Creationism Is Child Abuse... (2/5/2013 8:58:13 PM)

I taught in a Catholic HS. I was told by the monk who was headmaster. "In science class, I want you to teach science, In religion class, I'll teach religion"

Basically, he wanted me to stay the hell off his turf LOL.

If it wasn't a TOS violation, I could show you some photos of what fucking child abuse is.

[:o]

Yes, teaching creationism is not child abuse. As much as I have conflicting views on it taught in public/non-religious school, in no way is it child abuse.

What do you call intentionally handicapping your child's educational growth? If you yelled at the kid and called him worthless every day, so that they gave up in school, vs. just teaching them lies in school, at the end of the day, I see a child who is unable to function in society.

jlf1961 -> RE: Physicist: Teaching Creationism Is Child Abuse... (2/6/2013 4:51:09 AM)

I have heard some "new age" parent types insist on the fact that telling kids about Santa, the Tooth Fairy and the Easter bunny is mental abuse of the children.

Of course these same parents have some of the rudest, insubordinate, mouthy, obnoxious and generally undisciplined kids I have ever seen.

I dont want to spank the kids, them I want to gag and restrain. Its the parents I want to knock some sense into.

As for teaching creationism, I consider myself an average Christian, not a 24 point capital "C" Christian, like some. I believe that God initiated the big bang, then allowed the Universe to progress at its own speed, and evolve under natural and physical laws that are universal. Being Omnipotent, he knew what would happen, so he just let it happen.

That explains the continued expansion of the Universe, the laws of physics and natural selection and evolution to work. All of which I and any sane individual of faith cannot deny.

Of course, he may have had direct control in the creation of somethings, I mean have you seen a platypus? Proves God has a sense of humor.

Lets face it, creationism and the whole "the earth is less than 20000 years old" stuff has been proved wrong geologically, as well as with fossil records.

And the "Intelligent Design" theory falls short when you consider the existence of the people who need the warning label on chainsaws that state "Do not attempt to stop blade with hands or genitals."

Idiocy is just the tip of the iceberg as far as flaws with ID goes: for myself the fact that your knees are designed to break down a decade or two before the rest of you is a better argument against that one.

Please dont talk about Knees, I have had a total of 8 procedures on mine, and when it is cold or wet, pain is pretty much constant.

And I am not within ten years of dieing.

On the other hand, speaking as a smith who kept a lamp burning in front of an image of Brigde in my forge, the existence of temper colours on steel does strain my scientific materialism.

I mean, the fact that such a common material as iron can, with the right admixtures and heat treatment, be made into anything from springs to stone chisels could be the same "if it wasn't that way, we wouldn't be here and cultured enough to comment on it" as all the rest of the weak anthropic principle.

But that it comes with built in colour-codes to tell us when it's the right temperature for different hardnesses? That is a gift of the gods, I can't see it any other way.

Or the need for instructions on preparing a Pop-Tart.

Ah, no. That is called the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum of radiant energy.

Or a dribbling nose just above the mouth . . . a prostate wraped around the urethra . . good grief!! [:D]

Teaching anything is never abuse. Now circumcision, on the other hand ...

You are misreading what Dr. Krause was talking about. If you read past the stupid headline you will see he was referring to Young Earth theory. From the article:

“If you think about that, somehow saying that, well, anything goes, we shouldn’t offend religious beliefs by requiring kids to know – to understand reality; that’s child abuse,” he said. “And if you think about it, teaching kids – or allowing the notion that the earth is 6,000 years old to be promulgated in schools is like teaching kids that the distance across the United States is 17 feet. That’s how big an error it is.”

I think it is. Not all abuse is sexual or violence. You might call it 'new-citizens-abuse'. Children have a right to be told the truth, and ignorance will come back and bite them. It is really no small thing.

Teaching creationism, that sex can give you breast cancer and is icky, that gays are evil and God hates them and all the rest - that is poisoning a child's mind, and that is abusive, as I see the world

Powergamz1 -> RE: Physicist: Teaching Creationism Is Child Abuse... (2/6/2013 1:21:28 PM)

There seems to be a 'natural law' school of thought that unless there are burns, scars, or broken bones, anything a parent does to their propert... errrm... their kids is no one else's business.

Not everyone agrees. So yes, teaching kids something that will guarantee a more limited set of quality-of-life options, falls within the broadest possible set of 'abuse'.
