Switcheroo1983 -> Survivalist compound idea in Idaho (2/5/2013 9:31:09 PM)

http://news.yahoo.com/another-survivalist-development-idaho-182136900.html

quote:

A group of survivalists wants to build a giant walled fortress in the woods of the Idaho Panhandle, a medieval-style city where residents would be required to own weapons and stand ready to defend the compound if society collapses.

quote:

"There is no leader," Christian Kerodin, a convicted felon who is a promoter of the project, wrote in a brief email to The Associated Press. "There is a significant group of equals involved ... each bringing their own professional skills and life experiences to the group.

quote:

While the conviction makes it illegal for Kerodin to possess a firearm, residents of the Citadel would be required to own guns and to pledge to train together and use them if the compound were attacked. Residents would also be required to stock enough food and water to last a year.

I do not see this turning out how anyone wants it to. It would appear Mr. Kerodin likes having his front door kicked in.

if well meaning people follow this it only shows the level of pure despair toward government. america the not so beautiful after all.

EsotericLady -> RE: Survivalist compound idea in Idaho (2/5/2013 10:46:58 PM)

I don't think "well-meaning people" would be following a felon convicted of, among other things, possessing a firearm while posing as a counterterrorism expert.
Add to that the (supposed) plan to have a firearms factory manufacturing illegal assault weapons, and you have nothing short of a bunch of wackos just waiting for "a reason."

This context has nothing to do with "America the not so beautiful."

Like Waltos pond it's success would depend on the type of people who participated and led it, this one does not bode well.

Exactly.
People believe in walled compounds in a time when movement is considered a requirement for survival in the face of modern weapons technology? All defensive walls and positions do is raise the cost of reducing them for attackers. Walled cities stopped working about the time someone brought gunpowder back from China. And generally were taken if the attacker was determined anyway.
These people don't even have the imagination to think about fertilizer/fuel oil IEDs in a vehicle? You don't even need a suicide driver, remote pilotage is high school robotics class now. Talk about out of touch with modern times. Give attackers a few heavy mortars or an attack helicopter or two and everything gets real flat and strewn about in no time. Interlocking cave networks in rock geology works for longer. Okinawa, for instance. Same result, longer drama getting there.
The problem of survival when 'civilization collapses' isn't the random wandering lawless, it's the organized groups attempting to establish local hegemony and building effective scale support for the forces to accomplish and expand this. Whoever gets biggest first becomes the new civilization and rulers.

Fortress in the forest is not a good idea. I would rather buy a piece of farmland. Availability of food for common people will be the major problem in case of economic collapse.

DaNewAgeViking -> RE: Survivalist compound idea in Idaho (2/6/2013 4:09:14 AM)

Idaho, huh? This is hardly anything new under the sun.

NIMH -> RE: Survivalist compound idea in Idaho (2/6/2013 4:24:37 AM)

Firstly, never announce to the world your intentions to build a fortified area. After all if shit does hit the fan then guess what? You have now publically announced yourselves and you really will be a target now for the desperate, homeless, and degenerate dregs who would be left behind without a clue as to how to survive. Secondly, this guy should realize that with the current level of paranoia out there by those in power that he has now just painted a big red x on himself and made himself and his group one hell of a target for suspicious activities.

jlf1961 -> RE: Survivalist compound idea in Idaho (2/6/2013 4:26:35 AM)

Actually, the most effective design for a survivalist or doomsday compound would be based on the firebases of the Vietnam war or the Special Forces A team bases of the same era.

Living quarters would be bunker like structures that are partially underground or of blast resistant construction, linked to an underground shelter of NBC rated construction.

Outside the perimeter, layered sensor lines would mark intruders progress toward the compound.

Walls in the face of cannon are useless, I agree. However, unless you expect to fight an actual military force, they offer some deterrence to anyone breaking through the final defensive perimeter. The walls, if desired, should be of blast resistant construction, at least two feet thick and backed by an earthen berm to allow for defenders to have firing positions over the wall.

Of course, a hurricane fence such as those surrounding prisons topped with razor wire would be just as effective.

There are numerous bugout compounds that have been established by preppers for select groups of people, and none seem to feel it is necessary to manufacture illegal weapons. They do have the necessary equipment for making biofuels, vehicle repair, etc.

Of course there are those compounds that are being built in renovated missile silos. Being claustrophobic, that is not a course I would choose.

As for the group of people, as previously stated by others, this does not bode well. The leader is a convicted felon, and there seems to be indications of illegal activity or at least strong suggestions of it. This sounds to me that eventually it will end as Waco or Ruby Ridge.

I'd imagine that's why Korodin thinks that having a secure compound full of tooled up nutcases is going to be a good idea: he's getting his group organised before civilisation even collapses...

This particular group of nuts claim there won`t be any leaders.......ROTFLMAO.....

Anyone who believes that.... deserves to lose all/most of their money there.

Or no "recycling police".....lol.....talk about projecting one`s core values....."the gubment makes me separate the glass/cans/plastic from the garbage.....let`s build a fort to keep`m out".....Lol...

And the "theme park" that every set of nutters(beck is another nutter)thinks will shmaltz the place up......It won`t......Did michael jackson`s private theme park make him any less nutters?

What the hell is someone to do when his nutty neighbor threatens him or causes trouble? Shoot it out ...bunker to bunker?

No one need worry about this... if you get a bunch of nuts together....WITH GUNS...in a sealed compound they will just kill each other...and anyway we have drones now...We'll just call them terrorists and vaporize the survivors.

I get irked about the bolded part. For all the importance placed on separating the recyclables according to type, my County empties every damn Recycling dumpster into the same truck. They used to have separate trucks for glass/plastic/metal and paper/cardboard. You'd see a recycling truck drive by twice on pickup days. At least Republic Waste is smarter about it. If you choose their curbside recycling pickup, you get a big 96 gallon container and put everything into it. None of that separating shit. I'd still recycle the way I do now if the County decided that any recyclable could be dropped into any bin. Separating seems like a waste of time, IMO.

No leaders as in no INDIVIDUAL leader. It sounds as though a group specializing in individual expertise would govern the "citadel."

As to no recycling police and some theme park, I don't see mention of either of those in the article the OP gave us the link to?

You get a pass for being new.[:)]The "quote" boxs format the post. The best thing to do is reply at the very bottom.<winks>

I got my info about "the citadel" from The Colbert Report and a few stories about glen beck`s plans to build a "compound".

The common denominators seems to be fear of almost everything,a fantasy/hope that civilization will dissolve,a belief that guns solve every problem and that government is a mortal enemy.
