Actually, the most effective design for a survivalist or doomsday compound would be based on the firebases of the Vietnam war or the Special Forces A team bases of the same era.
Living quarters would be bunker like structures that are partially underground or of blast resistant construction, linked to an underground shelter of NBC rated construction.
Outside the perimeter, layered sensor lines would mark intruders progress toward the compound.
Walls in the face of cannon are useless, I agree. However, unless you expect to fight an actual military force, they offer some deterrence to anyone breaking through the final defensive perimeter. The walls, if desired, should be of blast resistant construction, at least two feet thick and backed by an earthen berm to allow for defenders to have firing positions over the wall.
Of course, a hurricane fence such as those surrounding prisons topped with razor wire would be just as effective.
There are numerous bugout compounds that have been established by preppers for select groups of people, and none seem to feel it is necessary to manufacture illegal weapons. They do have the necessary equipment for making biofuels, vehicle repair, etc.
Of course there are those compounds that are being built in renovated missile silos. Being claustrophobic, that is not a course I would choose.
As for the group of people, as previously stated by others, this does not bode well. The leader is a convicted felon, and there seems to be indications of illegal activity or at least strong suggestions of it. This sounds to me that eventually it will end as Waco or Ruby Ridge.
