Well, yeah, but a teacher's choices are a separate kettle of fish, mercifully.

That still sounds better than I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.

At least no politician has suggested that every high school student be tested on "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" and not allowed to graduate unless they passed that test.

Wouldnt the kids be better off reading the Kama Sutra?

Yes, that one too.

When I was in High School reading was required....I didn't like some of the books but some I did like The Hobbit, The Grapes of Wrath, The Time Machine, The Ox bow Incident, Master of the World, Alice Through the Looking-Glass, Rikki Tikki Tavi and All Creatures Great and Small. I also enjoy reading plays like Death of a Sales Man, The Crucible and Macbeth. I have not read this book so I can't say anything about it, but I do agree that reading should be required.

And no politician required you to be tested on each of these books or plays with the demand that, if you failed any one of those tests, you would not be allowed to graduate high school.

Suggesting that high school students be assigned to read Atlas Shrugged as part of their assigned readings versus requiring passing a test on Atlas Shrugged as a requirement to graduate high school are two different things.

I was feeling a little nostalgic, I enjoy reading. No not a politician but my teachers did test me on them. California does require an exit exam to be taken and passed in order to graduate for high school.

Most schools do. However, those exit exams tend to not be about one single, solitary book, on top of the battery of subjects already used.

I can think of one former poster who did [:)]

but in the larger sense,no.....no one gives a shit about Idaho(though they do have potatoes....lol)

Exactly. When this happens in a real state, call me.

Actually, those of us that live here do "give a shit". Don't really want to get into a state bashing argument here, but come on, when the best you have to offer is Snooky and "Da Situation" I don't think you have much room to talk.

Of course, what this GOP legislator may not be considering is that assigning kids a book is one of the best ways to make them hate it.

My thought exactly.

Just a side note: is anyone in the USA aware of just how little Ayn Rand is cared about elsewhere? She doesn't figure on any course in politics (or literature, or anything else) that I know of here in the UK. She's unknown. Her writings don't matter. Surely, educators would want *internationally* respected authors to be on any syllabus? Just a thought.

I don't see that it matters much what the kids are assigned to read if their curriculum doesn't require competency in English.

I wonder what conservatives would do/say, if we required students to read and understand actual scientific journals? Or economic journals? Or study the actual quotes of previous founding fathers and be able to tell the difference between a dude whom lived in the 18th century and one written in the 20th or 21th century. I imagine conservatives would get very angry that we are teaching our youth....TO THINK FOR THEMSELVES!

Not quite unknown, sadly. She's a biggish cult, particularly with monetarist leaning high tories and the sort of media pundit who thinks that the middle class white bloke is being horribly oppressed.
She's referenced even more by the left, amusingly: you rarely see an issue of New Statesmen where the latest flakey piece of non fiction making excuses for feudalism by some idiot who's missed that Milton Friedman has been proven completely wrong on almost everything can be reviewed without the hack giving the book in question a good kicking mentioning Atlas Shrugged...

I think you're barking up the wrong tree on that one, Joether. Your post seems to say that the Public Schools aren't already teaching kids to think for themselves. That's a point I'm willing to agree with, btw. I don't know any conservatives who would be against training our youth to be able to critically read/review scientific or economic journals.

Blimey. Well, all I can say is that I did politics at uni and now teach it occasionally too. Actually, I'm examining their A levels. The name doesn't get a mention. But that may be because high tory cults themselves aren't worthy of respect. [Yes, I did spell 'cults' correctly.]

Moonhead -> RE: Bill Would Require All Idaho Kids To Read Ayn Rand’s ‘Atlas Shrugged’ (2/12/2013 5:24:59 AM)

I know you used the correct spelling: "cults" would only be incorrect if the high tories we're talking about were Clarkson or Winner...
[;)]
(Seriously -and unfortunately- the quasi literate special pleader does have a following over here: it's just nothing like as extensive as the one she has over there. Nothing on an academic basis, but plenty of "if you don't get this, you aren't a weal and twue conservative...")

It's likely because England has a quite successful socialist system. Randians would have trouble getting traction in such an environment.

SOOOO true

I actually read all of the Canterbury Tales, Inferno and A Communist Manifesto in college. I've also read about 10 pages of an Ayn Rand book and couldn't read any more. There aren't very books that I simply can't read. A James Mitchner novel at the age of 14, with all of his scientific and geological facts was more readable than Ayn Rand can ever be for me.

My ex boss tried to get me to read it when I worked for him (he is far left liberal for those who like to keep track) and once suggested that he should make all employees read it to keep working for him. I told him I would read it, but only when I was at work. That was the end of him trying to get me to read the book. The fact that he thought it was good was enough to stop any interest I might have had in the book.

I admit I just skimmed through the rest of the thread but remember someone mentioning the book "I know why the caged bird sings" I think as books go if we had to mandate one to be read, I would much rather have my kids read that one as opposed to anything by Rand.

Well I am conservative and I wouldn't have a problem with any of that. So I imagine you don't have a clue what most conservatives would think.
