Benedict has dealt with health issues for some time, and the 85-year-old announced his decision in Latin during a meeting of Vatican cardinals Monday morning, according to the Associated Press. He said that because of his advanced age and diminishing strength, he didn't feel he could carry on the job, the AP said. Reuters quoted the Pope as saying he was "fully aware of the gravity" of his resignation. The 265th Pontiff, Benedict would be the first leader of the Church to step down voluntarily in almost six centuries. He has led the Church since 2005 through a tumultuous time that has seen him criticized for his handling of the scandal related to years of sexual abuse of young parishioners by priests and other clergy, and senior church officials' alleged moves to hide those actions. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-21409149

Yep, its coming here in the news as well.....and knowing the health state the pope before him was in, towards his end, I actually prefer it, when he realises it on time, that it is getting too much for himself and steps down....

Last papal resignation was 600 years ago. They don't resign because they're old. He's been forced out over the "Covering Up Child Rape" thing. Good for them. It's about freaking time. Pope Hitler Youth was a stupid idea, but I suppose he had enough supporters to get in in the first place.

Actually me too...while im no fan... I find the act of insisting that a pope is there for life, to be very sad and watching the deterioration of the last pope, was horrible...(I admired him as a man,) I believe this will be the first pope to resign in 600 years or so, so Im sure it will cause some theories, but it is the 2st century, with a busy schedule, and responsibility is harsh on someone who isnt feeeling they can do the best for the church.

I don't agree. He may be a piece of shit, but Ratzinger never was an idiot. The way he was behind the scenes all those years meant that politically, they had to give him the job, but the simple fact that he's been fired tells me everything I need to know. Being senile hasn't hurt any popes the last 2000 years has it? So it's bullshit for an excuse. He had his run, and it's time for him to go.

Even if fargle is right and this is over the latest kiddiefiddling Priests scare, they'll hardly admit it, will they? I do have an image of Dan Brown watching the news this evening and then rushing off to the study and firing up his word processor, though...

I've only known two Popes in my lifetime, and there was just no way for Benedict to match up to John Paul II. I can't say I'm sad to see him go, either, given his alignment with the conservative wing of the Catholic Church. I do agree that resigning is preferable to deteriorating, especially when that deterioration hurts his ability to be a voice of God on Earth.

He's got some kind of disease like Alzheimer's that clouds his judgment and/or ability to appear in control of himself. 2. There's a huge mega-scandal that he's resigning to avoid. 3. The Church wants to move ahead and ditch him as a symbol of the pederasty scandals, and move forward. I can't accept 2 because he's already presided over ugly stuff. Both 2 and 3 don't acknowledge how the Church works. I'd say he's one very sick man.

The moment I read the national news about the Pope resigning, the very first thing I thought was "the forum is going to have a field day with THIS news! And I see I am not disappointed. The pope isn't being FORCED OUT of anything!!! He is resigning on his own accord due to his age and health issues.
