He's had to deal with falling numbers of entrants to the priesthood, as well as a split between progressives in the west and conservatives in Africa. There are the money scandals and the paedo issue, neither of which will go away. The more time goes on, the harder the pope's job must be. With his failing health, the old boy just isn't up to it.

Perhaps the best innovation he could bring to the papacy is the precedent of resigning.

There isn't any position in the world like his: secular politicians are expected to piss off before they've hit senility partly because no-one expects them to handle the pace of politics into old age. Monarchs just withdraw from doing or saying anything the instant they become embarrassing (like our lunatic Nazi old bat of a Queen Mother, who was kept quiet for a decade, lest she say something appalling, before her gin-soaked carcass was finally wrestled into a coffin).

Popes, though - they're meant to maintain a hold on world affairs until they croak. That's just not sensible, especially nowadays. I think this resignation was a good move on his part (ie 'good' in terms of the future survival of the Catholic Church, assuming that one considers its survival to be a good thing).

I haven't had a chance to delve into this, but my initial reaction is to take the pope at his word.

He had a ringside seat for the decline of John Paul II, and I can understand his not wanting to go the same route.

yup think da same myself. on da news theyre saying his decision will allow future popes ta resign too. his health wasnt great from the get go.

Status: offline 		does it really matter why he is resigning? while I left the catholic church long ago over a disagreement on a private matter, I did not approve of a former member of the hitler youth being the supposed voice of god on earth. that's the best the church could do? a minion of the devil himself? says a lot about why I would never return to the church, even if I suddenly felt the need to. i'd go see a shrink first. let the old man retire. i'm sure he'll be meeting the boss before too long. he reminds me of some of the zombies on the walking dead the way he shuffles around!

Status: offline 		It has caused quite an event. I think the sum of the scandals, and there are quite a few more then just the pedophilic ones, (financial primarily and which haven't really made it into the Anglo press) and his age caused more stress then he thought he could cope with.

The more interesting thing to consider will be who will be his replacement, and that topic likely needs a thread of it's own.

The replacement should go smoothly as a process, but whether the Roman Catholic Church stays Eurocentric, or if not, if they pick the next Pope from Central or South America, or go to Africa, North America or Asia will affect the church materially and for a lengthy period of time.

All of the above is not entirely true. Most yes but still nobody knows the complete extent to which just whom was involved and all who have been victimized and if all have been justly compensated.

Recall that the guilty were moved around, the victims hushed and the extent of the papal cover-up is still not entirely known.

As far as I am concerned, too bad there isn't one but if there was, they could all...go to hell.

Status: offline 		He never wanted to be pope. He had made that clear in interviews many times and also according to interviews with other cardinals. It was also revealed this morning that he has a pacemaker so I'm going to go with the fact that he never wanted to be pope and he was just a placeholder with the death of John Paul II and he didn't want to be like John Paul II, barely able to walk or talk in his last few years. It's just something he was never cut out to be. He's uncomfortable in the role.

As it is right now, I'm betting my hedges on Arinze from Africa being the next pope. He was second in line last time and has the qualifications and charisma to be the pope.

The clever money is being advised by the Brit newspapers to go on the first ever African pope. But one of two very conservative cardinals - that isn't exactly unprecedented. Oh well.

Well, OK. So far, there have been a few thousand Catholic priests worldwide who've been accused of loathsome paedophiliac abuse of minors. Many of those accused still haven't faced the courts or even the police. Benedict did something, but not enough.

So, to take a more balanced and nuanced view - weighing the broken minds of thousands against the reputation of just one old man - I'd say yup, it's about time the withered little bastard fucked off. I hope that helps.
