Wow so many good ideas!

Vomit bags are a good idea for stashing in the car and what-not.

I'm pretty sure cuddly toys aren't allowed for the little girl on infection control but I will bear it in mind for my other little pen pal who is at home. Legos are a great idea because they can do so many different things.

LilSquaw - re the velcro I was thinking of something similar with magnet tape. Thanks for those sites, they are different ones than those I have found. Love printables since putting together little folders is something I can do very cheaply and will keep me busy while my own kiddie is napping.

A night light is a good idea, I assume if she's in infection control she must be in a single room so it won't disturb people.

Oside you make a good point about unscented products, thank you.

Sorry I'm not responding to everyone personally but I am copying things down onto a big list. Even things that won't work this time round I'm sure I can do for someone else in the future.

Did I say yet how lovely you all are for helping me?

Magnet tape would work as well.

I love printables.
They have tons of printable games, art projects and other things.
It is a cheap way to occupy a child in a fun and educational manner.

I personally enjoy teaching through play.

Also a cheap way to laminate papers w/o a laminating machine is clear contact paper.
The type that you can buy at WalMart.

Btw.. another idea for the little girl is a diary or journal.

What grade would a six-almost-seven year old be in? I think we add up the grade numbers differently here.

Athena, have I told you today what a wonderful person you are? I swear you make Me smile just by being you.

The only thing I would have said that hasn't been mentioned would be gum or hard candy. Mints are a good idea, but some can be kind of chalky, which leads to drinking water, which can lead to the water coming back up. Hard candy or gum, on the other hand, stimulate the saliva glands to moisten the mouth.

Over here, a person can call the hospital and speak to the charge nurse about what is allowed in the particular department. I don't know if that is an option across the pond, but it's worth a shot to find out what is and what isn't allowed.

Aw shucks you give me way too much credit. I didn't think of phoning the hospital, it's a specialist cancer centre so they must get asked all of the time.

LilSquaw - the dollhouse printables on one of your sites has got my imagination going, I'm going to see if I can make a tiny pop-up dollhouse in an altoids tin.

If it is one of the larger cancer center, they may have a website to tell you all of those things.

They have wonderful projects on those sites.
I'm glad that you are finding things you can use.
I have more sites if you need them.

Let me know and I will send them on the other side.

Athena you really are doing a wonderful thing!

for the lady, a good nail file and some different size plasters. i've lost count of how many times i've snagged a nail only to find out my files have lost their surface, or i just don't have one.

the little girl will be in year two. you could get a book of her age group and print off so many pages a week so that she has some to look forward to. print out jokes and riddles. you could also send her little plastic animals and such.

needles

Me too!!!

Car travel games for kids that hard plastic that could be wiped down.

Our hospitals here have computers that the kids and adults can use .. what about some inexpensive universal ear phones/buds that could be plugged in to listen to music. Or even a small gift card (Amazon) where music could be downloaded.

A small throw/blanket that the lady could keep in her car in case she gets a chill.

If she is losing her hair some scarfs or hats or something to cover her head. Comfy jammies are always a plus in an unfamiliar place. Slippers, socks, nail kits, coffee kits, and hot cocoa. My grandfather hated hospital food so we always tried to get him something else if he was eating that day. His throat also got dry so cough drops or something to help soothe the throat.

for the little one, possibly plastic play sets, like a farm or some such thing. sometimes I've seen small sets of animals and such at the dollar store. a plastic shoebox to keep her special treasures in would be nice.
for the older lady, maybe a digital voice recorder, something she can record her life history on, sharing the memories with her family later. an inexpensive option would be a nice journal and some good pens. possibly a handmade booklet of coupons, good for little favors, a shopping trip, painting her nails, just little things she likes to do that she can cash in with friends and family.

My favorite were mad libs. Fill in noun/verb may be a little ahead but I seem to remember age skewed version I got for the nieces.

Board games could be covered with the contact paper. Candyland, chutes & ladders. My favorites that are "dunkable" were Mr. Potato head & cootie (perfect for hospital because they are funny)

Would check if barbie hair is ok but dress up tiara/ wand or barbies are this age group

Miscellaneous magazines, besides books already suggested. Things to keep distracted with, even if dumb, like cosmo. M

Just wanted to pop back and say thank you for all the suggestions. The survival kit is now too big to post - thankfully I can pass in on through a family member. And I now have enough things to send my little pen pals for the next four packages or so,

I've really enjoyed this project, it makes me so happy to find little surprises for someone. It's like a drug, I don't know why people aren't nice to each other all the time.

One last thing - has anyone in the UK seen altoids on sale anywhere recently? I have a couple of minature playsets I'd like to build and an altoids tin or something similar sized would be perfect for it.

Thank yoooou

For the little girl if allowed
Small lap white board and expo markers.
You can get them at walmart and they can be disinfected easily if you get the ones made of real wood.

For the woman:

Some type of shoulder wrap as it can get VERY cold in hosiptals because it helps reduce infection.
Or a couple hand warmers ?

These are all wonderful ideas. However, for the little girl, some would cause me concern. If these items are meant for her hospital stay, the hospital may not allow many of them, like the stuffed animals. But they would be very welcome while she is recovering at home from surgery. Since you are pen pals, might want to check with the hospital where she will have surgery as to what they will allow her to have. Or make that a suggestion to the family when you send the gifts.

For example....

I hate to rain on anyone's parade. And Athena, what a lovely thought!

Tazzy thanks for raising that concern. I have checked it out and absolutely everything I'm sending for her can be washed/wiped clean with disinfectant or alcohol or whatever it is they clean things with on the ward. Every bit of paper is laminated, all the folders are plastic, the toys are solid plastic or metal.
