Is there such a thing as a cheap throw away phone in the UK? It would help the kid keep in contact with her family and friends - and have the benefit of being able to play games on it.

There is, but I don't know that I'd feel right giving someone else's child a phone, since I don't know the family I don't know whether they'd feel ok about it.
It's a nice idea though.

Athena,

Would you mind sharing the organization that you do the charity pen pal through either here or privately.

I was thinking that would be a wonderful thing to get myself and son into. He loves to write letters and do projects for people.

One thing that has always struck me on hospital stays is how hard it is to keep anything handy. The night table is often out of reach; the "everything" table (the one that slides over the bed) fits only so much, and things often fall off; and any place else requires getting up. Some sort of bag that can be tied to the bed rails to allow for easy access would be a godsend.

Great list.

I would add a pillow and blanket. When I was in the hospital, I was freezing and hated their blankets and pillows.

What a smart, practical idea, I love it!

I bet I could easily whip something up with a bunch of pockets that could hold things like books, phones, bottles of water...
